FA Cup:
It's...Brighton
(h)
Newcastle were
handed home advantage when the FA Cup Fifth Round draw took place on
Monday night, with Brighton & Hove Albion making their way to
Tyneside during the weekend of Saturday March 1st.
That's one of three all-Premier League ties in this round, with the Seagulls
already victorious at Gallowgate this season - 1-0 winners back in October.
While United saw off League Two Bromley 3-1 at home and League One
Birmingham City 3-2 away, Albion made it this far thanks to a 4-0 success at
Championship Norwich City and a 2-1 home win over Chelsea.
Fifth Round draw:
Preston North End v Burnley
Aston Villa v Cardiff City
Crystal Palace v Millwall
Manchester United v Fulham
Newcastle United v Brighton & Hove Albion
Bournemouth v Wolves
Manchester City v Plymouth Argyle
Exeter City / Nottingham Forest v Ipswich Town
This will be the seventh game between the two sides in this competition,
with the Magpies winless since 1930:
2023/24 (h) R5
2012/13 lost 0-2 (a) R3
2011/12 lost 0-1 (a) R4
1985/86 lost 0-2 (h) R3
1982/83 lost 0-1 (h) R3R
1982/83 drew 1-1 (a) McDermott R3
1929/30 won 3-0 (h) Gallacher 3 R5
The words "Trelford Mills" doubtless flashed through the minds of
those of supporters of similar vintage to us....
Newcastle's next six games now look like this:
Sat 15.02.2025 Manchester City (a) PL
Sun 23.02.2025 Nottingham Forest (h) PL
Wed 26.02.2025 Liverpool (a) PL
Sat 01.03.2025 Brighton (h) (date tbc) FA
Mon 10.03.2025 West Ham United (a) PL
Sun 16.03.2025 Liverpool (n) LC
Carabao Cup:
Wembley tickets
Reigning cup holders
Liverpool attempt to defend the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March 16th.
The kick-off time remains unconfirmed.
Ticket sale information is now online
here - there's too much in there to replicate so we suggest
you read it.
We will occupy the same (West) side
as in 2023, receiving a smaller ticket allocation of 31,939 compared to
32,761 two seasons ago - reason unknown.
Adult prices range from £41 to £150 and those who are eligible to purchase
them will receive emails from NUFC confirming which priority group they are
in.
The first ticket sale period is on Wednesday at Noon.
Hopes that the engineering work on the East Coast Main Line planned that
weekend would be postponed proved to be false, with diversions via the
Durham coast and bus replacement services for Durham and Darlington
passengers. More details are online here
(For anyone planning on driving to York and catching a train from there,
be aware that the station car park closes permanently on March 14th for
building work).
Newcastle's Wembley date
means that the Premier League home fixture against Crystal Palace will be
rescheduled to a new date as yet unconfirmed.
The winners of this season's Carabao Cup Final take a place at the playoff
stage of the European Conference League - unless they have already qualified
for Europe via a different route.
U21s:
Beaten by Baggies
West Brom U21s 3
Newcastle U21s 1
Monday saw Newcastle U21s in action at the ARMCO Arena home of National League side
Solihull Moors, facing a West Brom side who were unbeaten in their
most recent seven U21 league and cup matches.
The hosts fielded over-age pair Daryl Dike and Semi Ajayi as they returned
to fitness but soon lost the services of Kev Mfuamba to injury.
United's Garang Kuol saw an early effort shave the crossbar but Albion led
1-0 at the interval, an Akeel Higgins shot from distance on 36 minutes that
gave visiting goalkeeper James Taylor no chance.
Ex-Celtic striker Eseoso Sule netted in the 47th and 72nd minutes to give
Albion a commanding advantage, before a late United surge saw Jay
Turner-Cooke get one back on 88 minutes with a curling effort.
Albion then retained their two goal lead when Kuol was dubiously denied by
an offside call and another effort was cleared off the line by Muhamed
Diomande.
Team: Taylor, R.Powell (Watts 76), Charlton, Bailey (Harper
76), Heffernan,
C.Thompson, Kuol, Stanton, Brayson (Turner-Cooke 55), Al.Harrison,
Emerson (Ferreira 67).

The Magpies have played at the ground otherwise known as Damson Park
previously, drawing a reserve game 1-1
there against Birmingham City back in January 2006.
Update:
John Tudor RIP
![](players/tudor-john-nufc-4.jpg)
We're
sad to report that the death of former Magpie John Tudor has been
announced, at the age of 78.
Playing local football in his
Derbyshire, John was briefly on the books of Middlesbrough before
joining Coventry City from Ilkeston Town during 1964.
Winning a Second Division Championship
medal at Highfield Road in 1967, a £65,000 switch to Sheffield United came
the following year and Tudor hit a brace against Newcastle during a League
Cup tie in 1969.
By January 1971 John was a Magpie - as David Ford and John Hope headed to
Bramall Lane - and he initially played in a forward line with Pop Robson,
also featuring alongside Wyn Davies and Keith Dyson.
The arrival of Malcolm Macdonald on
Tyneside before the following season proved to be pivotal, a productive
partnership seeing John create many goals for Supermac and score a fair few
himself.
Appearing in the 1974 FA Cup Final defeat
to Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, John did win silverware with United in the
shape of the Texaco Cups.
However, his FA Cup contributions are well
remembered, not least a diving header against Forest in the riot game that
was expunged from the records, when the FA ordered a replay - that
"goal" perhaps more celebrated than any of the 73 he scored that
did count.
Tudor's own personal favourites were also
both headers: at home to Manchester United and the other against Liverpool
at Anfield. Tragically, that part of his game looks to have affected him in
later life.
Outlasting Macdonald at SJP by a few
months, Tudor's 220nd and final appearance came in 1976 before moving on to
Stoke City and then Belgians side AA Gent.
A knee injury prompted his retirement in
1978 and he served as coach and later manager of North Shields, also
entering the pub trade in Northumberland.
Later a publican back in his hometown of
Ilkeston, John became involved in summer coaching camps for American
youngsters during 1991 and emigrated permanently to the USA during 1994,
living in St Paul, Minnesota.
Recovering from a heart attack in 2014, sad
news of an Alzheimer's diagnosis came four years later, prompting a
rendition of "Hallelujah, John Tudor" from Newcastle
supporters during the Boxing Day 2018 visit to Anfield.
John returned to Tyneside in April 2019 and
was warmly applauded when presented to the St. James' Park crowd, flanked by
Supermac and Bob Moncur.

arrival
of Toon teen trio
Following the
closure of the latest transfer window, Newcastle have now confirmed their
Premier League squad, using just 24 of the permissible 25 places.
Out of the listing published last September go departed duo Miguel
Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, while forgotten full back Jamal Lewis
returns, although he remains sidelined due to injury.
Meanwhile, the U21 player list - that has no limit on numbers - includes
three new names, two of which are yet to be officially confirmed by the
club*.
Kyle Fitzgerald* 18 year-old winger who played for Newcastle in
pre-season as a trialist while still with Galway United. Turning 18 last
month, his parent club haven't confirmed his departure as yet.
Fraser Harper 18 year-old midfielder formerly with Wolves who joined
United earlier this season following a trial and has appeared at U18 and U21
level so far.
Baran Yidliz* Midfielder reportedly secured from Turkish side
Genclerbirligi after celebrating his 18th birthday earlier this month.

his side lose 1-2 at Grimsby Town in League Two on Saturday. Charlie

Joe White
(MK Dons)
The midfielder missed Saturday's 0-1 home reverse at the hands of
Bromley in League Two due to injury.

Following his loan move, the midfielder was an unused substitute as
Moors won 2-0 at Hereford in the National League North on

Update:
Coach arrival
Newcastle have
reportedly filled the vacancy of U21 Assistant Coach by appointing Robbie
Stockdale, who was most recently on the staff at Barrow.
Now 45 year, Redcar-born Stockdale adds Tyneside to his CV following
previous stints on Teesside as a Boro player and Wearside as a youth team
coach and caretaker boss of the mackems on three occasions.
Robbie arrives to assist Diarmuid O'Carroll, who was recruited by United
from St.Mirren last September as U21 Lead Coach.

Following Carabao Cup and FA Cup
ties, Newcastle
return to Premier League action on Saturday when
they visit the Etihad Stadium.
Kick-off is an old fashioned, non-televised 3pm and United's
3,000 tickets are sold out.
Eddie Howe's side go in search of a club record-equaling fifth successive PL
away win, although they'll need to win for the first time at this ground in
that competition in order to achieve that.
This will be United's 20th attempt at doing that - so far they've
taken just two points from a possible 57.
The last Magpie to score a Premier League goal at the Etihad was DeAndre
Yedlin back in September 2018 - 510 minutes ago, or eight and a half hours.
In all competitions, Newcastle have won six successive
matches away from Gallowgate going into this game - their best run
of form since managing seven in a row on the road back in 1994.
Team: Jamaal Lascelles remains out,
while the fitness of Harvey Barnes, Joelinton, Sven Botman, Dan Burn
and Anthony Gordon is yet to be established.

Update:
Gordon Marshall
RIP
The death of former Magpies goalkeeper
Gordon
Marshall
has been announced, at the age of 85.
Born in Surrey, Gordon
was raised in Edinburgh and appeared for local sides Balgreen Rovers
and Dalkeith Thistle before signing for Heart of Midlothian in 1956.
Winning two league titles and three League Cups at Tynecastle,
Marshall made an £18,500 move to SJP in 1963, replacing Dave
Hollins for a 3-1 opening day home win over Derby County that
August.
Gordon became an integral part of United's resurgence, playing in
all 42 league games in 1964/65 as Joe Harvey's side achieved
promotion back to the top flight.
What would be his 177th and final competitive appearance was a 1-3
league loss at Spurs during April 1968, losing his
place to
Iam McFaul and moving on to Nottingham
Forest in October of
that year.
Returning north of the border with
Hibernian in 1969, later
moves saw Gordon
play for
Celtic, Aberdeen and Arbroath, before
combining running a newsagents and
barbers shop in Edinburgh with playing and managing Scottish
junior side Newtongrange Star.

Part of the large range available from Tyneside-based Football Bobbles
is a new version of their Lee bobble hat, referencing a certain
former Magpie midfielder.

Styled on United's distinctive 1997/98 season change kit, the hats are made
in the UK - one size fits most.
These are on sale here
and we had one to give away, asking which Newcastle player was abused by
Everton fans on his return to Goodison Park in February 1998, just
days after his transfer was completed.
It was of course Gary Speed and the winning entry was received from Ed
Liddell.

Albert Gosnell
born, Colchester.
(1904-10 player, 1919-21 trainer)
Gosnell was signed from Chatham and debuted in a 3-0 home
victory over Middlesbrough in November 1904, inheriting the winger's shirt from
Bobby Templeton.
Netting his first goal two weeks later against Bury at SJP, Albert was a
regular starter in both the 1905 & 1907 Championship-winning sides - also
playing in United's FA Cup Final losses at Crystal Palace in 1905 & 1906.
Winning a single England cap in 1908, what proved to be Gosnell's final outing
for Newcastle was a 3-4 home defeat by Manchester United in February
1910.
Moving on to Spurs, Albert later featured both for
Darlington and Port Vale, before making a return to Newcastle during 1919 as an assistant
trainer.
Leaving SJP for the second time in 1921 when appointed Norwich City Manager,
Gosnell subsequently worked as Colchester Town trainer and became a licensee in Norwich. He
died in January 1972.

born, Stirchley, Birmingham. (1928-30)
![](players/wood-edmund-northampton.jpg)
Having played for Redditch, Northampton Town and Birmingham City,
United
paid £750 to sign Ed from Rhyl Athletic in 1928.
However, the centre half had an inauspicious debut in defence in a 2-7 home defeat at
the hands of Burnley in August 1928.
After two further first team appearances, Wood found himself replaced when
United turned to Burnley's Jack Hill.
Featuring only occasionally from that point onwards, Eli's final senior game
came in a 1-1 home draw with Birmingham in April 1930.
He later returned for a third spell with Rhyl after appearing for Wellington
Town and Runcorn.
Becoming a fireman in Northampton after hanging up his boots, Wood's death was
recorded there during June 1986.

1950
Keith Dyson born, Blackhill, Durham.
(1967-71)
![](players/dyson-keith-nufc.jpg)
Striker who came through the youth setup at Gallowgate
and signed his first professional contract in August 1968.
Making his senior
team
debut in a 2-2 home draw with Spurs the following month, Keith's first
goal came in his third game - against Nottingham Forest at Meadow Lane (The
City Ground was closed due to fire damage).
That season also saw Dyson make four appearances in
the Fairs Cup
campaign, while he netted against both Dundee United and Anderlecht as we
attempted to defend our European crown in 1969/70.
Keith
departed for Blackpool in October 1971, after Seasiders boss Bob Stokoe
insisted on him being part of the deal that took Tony Green from Bloomfield
Road to Tyneside.
Forced into retirement with knee problems in 1976, Dyson was awarded a
testimonial against Stoke City in December of that year.
He made a comeback some three years later with Lancaster City, also serving as
their manager - joined there by his former Tangerine colleague, Alan
Suddick.
Keith later
lived in Slaley.

1945
David Elliott born, Tantobie, Durham. (1966-71)
Midfielder signed from
the mackems at a cost of £10,000, having come through the ranks at Roker Park
- although he had begun his career with Gateshead.
Arriving
at SJP, along with fellow new boys John McNamee and Tommy Robson, Dave
made his debut on the last day of 1966 with United rock bottom of
Division One.
That game ended in a
0-4 loss to Spurs
at White Hart Lane,
but
his efforts helped United to maintain top flight status.
Making three appearances in the successful 1968/69 Fairs Cup
campaign (and one the following season),
Dave's final outing in a Newcastle shirt came at home to Ipswich Town in
November 1970.
Moving on to
Southend
United the following January, he
had spells as player-manager of Newport County and Bangor
City (twice) - leading the latter to the 1984 FA Trophy
final at Wembley Stadium (where
they drew 1-1
before
losing a replay to Northwich Victoria).
Elliott then coached at Cardiff City and took charge of Caernarfon Town. His
self-named sports shop can still be found on the main street in Bangor, North
Wales.

1964
Michael Dudley Hooper born, Bristol.
(1993-96)
![](players/hooper-mike-nufc.jpg)
Signed from Liverpool for £550K to
replace the departed Tommy Wright, Mike took over as our first-choice
goalkeeper initially, but a number of errors saw Pavel Srnicek
return.
Kevin Keegan took issue with the stick that Hooper took from some sections of
the SJP crowd, even threatening to resign over it.
However, he also sought to augment his goalkeeper options, firstly with a move
for Brad Friedel that stalled over work permit problems and then by signing
Shaka Hislop.
Hooper went on loan to the mackems in the 1995/96 but never played a game for
them.
Never conforming to the stereotype of footballers, Hooper holds an English
Language Degree and is a self-confessed 'twitcher'.
Refusing requests for interviews since his retirement in 1996, Hooper
reportedly worked as a Bettaware salesman and pub doorman in the Durham
City area.
One post-match incident involving Hoops is recalled
here.

1994 Miguel
Almiron born, Asuncion, Paraguay. (2019-25)
Arriving for a then-record transfer fee claimed to be £20.7m on the final day of the
January 2019 window, "Miggy" had built his reputation in two seasons in the USA at Atlanta
United that included a MLS Cup success.
The Paraguayan international winger/forward was the second player from that
country to join United, after fellow Asuncion native Diego Gavilan in 2000.
Beginning his playing career at Cerro Porteno,
Almiron left Paraguay in 2015 for Argentinean side Atletico
Lanus, helping them to clinch the Premera
Division.
Although not finding the net in England,
Miggy's initial impact was tangible and his popularity on Tyneside was
almost instant.
Part of a front trio with Ayoze
Perez and Salomon Rondon, they helped United to 21 points from the last 13
games, comfortably avoiding relegation.
However, under Steve Bruce, the pressure of not scoring
seemed to affect his game until breaking his duck at the 27th time of asking with a late
winner at home to Crystal Palace before Christmas.
Three goals in as many games - one in each of the Rochdale FA Cup ties and one at
Wolves - put Miggy one behind top scorer Jonjo
Shelvey and he ended the season in pole position with eight.
Five more followed before his 27th birthday with a memorable match-winning
brace against Southampton - United finishing an epic 3-2 victory with nine men.
Miggy's start to the 2022/23 season was remarkable, finding the net nine
times and receiving numerous awards for his goals and performances as United
made it into the top four and then the final of the League Cup.
There were strong rumours of a move to Saudi side Al-Shabab FC in the
January 2024 transfer window but he remained on Tyneside.
However, he left the club in January 2025 and re-joined Atlanta in the MLS
for a reported fee of around £11m.

1997 Adam
Armstrong born, Newcastle. (2012-18)
Involved with the Magpies since
the age of nine, striker Adam made his U18 debut in a 0-4 home loss to Spurs in
August 2012.
Netting the following week in a 1-2 defeat at Southampton, within a month he'd
made an international bow for England U16s.
Scoring six goals in his first U18 season the next
season saw promotion to United's U21 squad and a goal in each of his first three league outings.
For England he was also prolific, with seven goals in
just five U17 games - although he was denied one other cap when called
into Newcastle's first team squad for the League Cup tie at Morecambe in
August 2013.
He failed to make the bench that night, but was named among the substitutes in
the Premier League for the first time at Norwich City the following January.
That followed further goal feats: a
brace in the Youth Cup at Barnsley, two against the
mackems and two in the U21 Cup against Leicester City helping to 20
for the season.
Celebrating his 17th birthday with his first professional contract at United, just a month later Adam experienced a memorable week culminating in a
senior club debut.
Collecting the Wor Jackie trophy at the Sport Newcastle
awards, he scored against Chelsea at SJP in the FA Youth Cup 24 hours later and
was picked by England U17s.
Armstrong came off the bench in the closing stages of a 0-1
defeat by Fulham at Craven Cottage in March 2014, becoming the club's youngest-ever player in
the Premier League in the process.
After three more subs outings that season, Adam was on the plane
for United's pre-season trip to New Zealand and netted against Australians Sydney in
Dunedin.
A first competitive senior start then came in a 3-2
League Cup victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in September 2014.
Leaving SJP in July 2015 on a six month loan to League One Coventry City, a
fine scoring of 13 goals saw his loan extended.
Notching a 34 minute hat-trick at Crewe in the opening game of 2016, Arma
managed 20 goals in 40 Sky Blue outings but after a pair of substitute
appearances for Newcastle in the Championship was loaned to Barnsley.
That proved less productive with just six goals in 35 games for the League One
Tykes, although his season ended on a high note as an England U20 World Cup
winner.
The 2017/18 campaign saw a half season switch to second tier Bolton Wanderers,
where he hit three goals in 23 games.
A resurgence followed a loan to Blackburn Rovers in January 2018, a reunion
with ex-Coventry boss Tony Mowbray bringing nine goals and
Championship promotion.
Sold to Rovers for £1.75m in June as he debuted for England
U21s, Adam faced Newcastle in the FA Cup the following January and
inevitably scored - although United won the 3rd Round replay.
Remaining a regular scorer in the second tier - and in a race with fellow
ex-Mag Ivan Toney for the Golden Boot in the 2020/21 season, speculation over
a move to the Premier League coincided with his 24th birthday.
He lost out to Toney for the Golden Boot but earned a transfer to Southampton in
August 2021, reported for around £15m.
Armstrong faced his old club in the two-legged League Cup semi-final in 2023
and looked to have equalised in the first leg at St. Mary's before VAR ruled
it out for handball.
He remained with the Saints after they tumbled into the Championship at the
end of the season and then helped them gain promotion.
Armstrong scored 24 goals in the 2023/24 season, including two in the
play-off semi-final second leg against West Bromwich Albion and then the
only goal of the game in the final at Wembley.
Reunited with former boss Mowbray when joining West Bromwich Albion on loan in January 2025,
Adam scored on his debut in a 2-1 Championship home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The home game against Notts County was postponed, but the club
anticipated the inclement weather and produced a one-sheet programme titled
the "Frost Programme".
It opened with the following statement:
"You may have already read elsewhere that, because of the extremely
adverse weather conditions we have decided not to produce your normal
match day magazine for today's game.
"We have already lost two match
programmes (Preston and Wrexham) and, frankly, the financial losses are
such that we cannot afford to go ahead with colour printing and risk
today's game being called off.
"So this special "Frost" programme comes

Newcastle's debut at The Riverside Stadium didn't begin well, John
Beresford turning Juninho's cross into his own net to give Boro a half

Kevin Keegan brought on debutant Tino Asprilla in the 67th minute - the Colombian having famously flown in and enjoyed a glass of
wine with his lunch.
Within six minutes, Tino had charged down the left wing, bamboozled the
lumbering Steve Vickers and centred for Steve Watson to level.
Les
Ferdinand then won it for United when goalkeeper Walsh fumbled an easy
shot into the net. Commentating on local radio, Malcolm Allison was
sacked after describing that goal using "industrial" language.
