10 mins Kieran Trippier's corner from
the left was pushed behind for another corner on the other side. Miggy Almiron
surprisingly took that one, quickly passing it along the ground to Trippier.
He flighted a perfect cross to the far post, where Bruno Guimaraes took
the ball on the volley and directed it back across goal into the opposite
corner. A thing of beauty and a virtual rerun of Bruno's opener at home to
Brentford two years ago, except that one saw him head home rather than volley.
A nod also to Lewis Miley, who stood up to Nuno Tavares on the six yard line in
front of goal as the corner was taken, allowing Bruno vital space - what the
Chronicle used to call unseen work. 1-0
26 mins A loose pass from Almiron was
played to Morgan Gibbs-White midway inside the Forest half and he slotted it
forward to Anthony Elanga in between Sven Botman and Dan Burn. The forward
outpaced Burn but Botman was closing in on him when Martin Dubravka charged out
of his box and Elanga slotted the ball through the 'keeper's legs into the
unguarded goal. 1-1
43 mins A free-kick on the halfway line
towards the United right was played forward by Trippier and bounced into the box
before Botman nodded it into the path of Fabian Schar, who stroked the
ball on the half-volley into the corner leaving Matz Sels helpless. 2-1
45+6 mins With the indicated five
minutes of added time already up, United elected to play a goal kick around the
back line to the injured Schar and the ball was then lost in midfield. Tavares
found Callum Hudson-Odoi down the left and exchanged passes with Nicolas
Dominguez before shooting from the edge of the box.
In trying to block the shot, Miley succeeded only in deflecting the ball inside
Dubravka's near post, leaving the flat-footed 'keeper stranded. 2-2
Half time:
Forest 2 Newcastle 2
66 mins Harvey Barnes was crowded out
down by the left corner flag by Neco Williams and Elanga but the latter played a
weak pass that was intercepted by Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian took a
touch and steadied himself before curling a shot from 20 yards beyond into the
right hand corner of the net before celebrating in front of the away contingent
in the Bridgford Stand. Magic! 3-2
Full time: Forest 2 Newcastle 3
Eddie Howe
said:
"It was another really entertaining
game. We came in level at half-time after playing well. We showed good spirit to
win the game.
"Big win, great spirit. Especially in the second half. We played well
in the first period. We dominated the ball and controlled the game but then came
in at 2-2 which was disappointing.
"Second half was different I thought we won the game based on our
determination and unity and spirit.
"Having a couple of options from the bench was massive for us and we
haven't had that for a few months. Hopefully everyone came through this one fit
because that's going to be key for us.
"We're just trying to win every game we play. We're feeling more
ourselves now after these couple of away wins.
"Jacob Murphy was unusable for us today, he didn't feel great in the
warm-up. He had a tight calf.
"We are still getting challenges left, right and centre. But at this moment
we are managing to come through those. Today was a massive result for us.
"It gives us a real big high off the back of last week where there were
positives but it was a disappointing result. The players keep giving more and I
could not be more proud of the players."
On Bruno:
"I think, like all players this season, he’s had moments where he’s
been the difference-maker for us and there have been moments when games have
been more difficult.
"He’s definitely targeted by teams now to stop him, and that is in part
why we moved him and tried something different.
"He’s got real quality, but underneath it all he is a humble lovely
person as well and those two things, the player and the person, makes him a
special man for us. When we can get him the ball higher up the pitch he has
undoubted quality.
"It’s a difficult challenge when I’ve only got three recognised
midfielders. There were a couple of attacks where our midfield was too open and
exposed our back four. The balance isn’t 100% right in the team.”
On Callum Wilson:
"It's a slight concern for us after the game. His shoulder
is fine but he looks like there is a problem with one of the muscles
in his arm. We're hopeful it is not serious but at this moment we
don't know."
On Anthony Gordon:
"Yeah, he did a real shift for the team today.
I didn’t tell any lies pre-game he hadn’t trained until the day
that I did my press conference (Friday) when he did train and
looked well.
"But still when you have a disjointed week it’s not
easy at this level, but I though he did very well and played very
well in the first half."
Two-goal Bruno Guimaraes added:
"I would like to give them a hug (the fans, after his
second goal) but I remembered that I have nine yellow cards so I
cannot have another so it was very special for me . The away support
for us has been massive so this was for them."
Nuno
Espirito Santo:
"Good performance, we did
a lot of things good. Some things bad that really cost us. We didn't
defend well the corner for the third goal but overall we played good. The
boys fight and we had chances to make a difference.
"It's hard - I'm very polite in these
situations. I don't like to interfere too much but when VAR have time to see and
check it over and over again they don't see what I see. It happens, let's move
on.
"More important for me is to try and look how we play. We did well, we
created a lot of situations. Controlling the game in the second half, playing
good. We have to be focused and look at details.
"Final decision was good, we had one vs
ones with the goalkeeper. We are finding the right space but we need to improve
on the finishing.
"We've been working very hard, the boys
are committed. It's about trying to convert results from spells of good
football. And we have to improve defensively.
"I am not concerned about if we miss one chance or a one v one, because you
are producing a lot. For sure, with the quality and the talent things will get
better.
"That is not a concern but we are worried and concerned and we have to
address how easy we are conceding goals, it is disappointing.”
When pressed on the penalty:
"Yes, clearly we should have had a penalty. I saw it over and over again.
For me, it is a clear penalty.
"I think Anthony Taylor maybe doesn’t
have a clear view of the incident because it is from behind. But when you have
the chance to have VAR check it and see the replays, I think it is so obvious.
That is why I don’t understand the decision of not giving the penalty.
"I think it was a defining moment because we came from behind twice, which
is very hard against a very good team. You then have a clear chance to be in
front.
"We don’t know what would have happened but it clearly changes the game.
After all the effort of the boys and how well they were doing things, that was a
decisive moment.
At the eighth time of asking Newcastle beat a side
managed by Nuno Esprito Santo, after failing to do so in six games against
Wolves (five draws and one loss) and one against Spurs (one defeat).
Bruno Guimaraes hit his second and third goals of the season, adding to one
at Sheffield United. This was his third brace as a Magpie, following two goal
salvoes at SJP against Leicester City (April 2022) and Brentford (October 2022).
The Brazilian has now netted 12 times in the PL, replicating the NUFC
records of Ruel Fox, Kevin Nolan, Allan Saint-Maximin and Steven Taylor.
Fabian Schar's 13th PL strike saw him become our most prolific defender in
that competition, one ahead of Steven Taylor. The Swiss international goes level
with Hatem Ben Arfa and Joe Willock in the club's all-time PL scoring chart.
Anthony Gordon reached a half century of appearances in all
competitions for United, 39 in the PL (26 starts and 13 sub) and the rest in FA
Cup, League Cup and Champions League.
The Magpies have now won their last four away games in all
competitions (3-0 mackems FAC, 2-0 Fulham FAC, 3-1 Aston Villa PL, 3-2
Nottingham Forest PL). The last recorded instance of that occurred in the
2016/17 Championship season (Rotherham United 1-0, Barnsley 2-0, Preston North
End 2-1, Leeds United 2-0 - all in the Championship).
No less than 90 goals have now been scored during United's 24 PL
games (51 in our favour, 39 conceded) - the largest current aggregate total in
the competition.
Kieran Trippier recorded his 10th PL assist of the season; according to
the PL's own statistics he's the first Newcastle player to reach double figures
since Laurent Robert in 2001/02 (he got 11). Trippier's 10 assists is the joint
best in the PL this season, level with Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa.
His PL assist record as a Magpie is as follows:
2021/22 0 assists from 5 starts +1 sub
2022/23 7 assists from 38 starts
2023/24 10 assists from 22 starts
Total: 17 assists from 65 starts + 1 sub
Newcastle have scored 22 goals in their 12 PL away games to date.
Excepting last season's final total of 32 from 19 games, that 22 is the largest
amount they've registered during a top-flight campaign since hitting 27 in
2011/12. Their most prolific PL season was 2001/02, with 34 goals.
NUFC after 24 PL games - last ten seasons:
2013/14 37 points, 8th GD +1

Following a chaotic 90 minutes in which they twice lost the lead in slipshod
fashion, Newcastle held out to claim all three points at the City Ground on
Saturday night.
Unbeaten on the banks of the Trent in five previous Premier League visits,
United looked set to extend that sequence when Bruno Guimaraes volleyed past SJP
old boy Matz Sels after 10 minutes, meeting Kieran Trippier's cross that
followed Miggy Almiron's short corner from the right.
Winless in eight league and cup games in 2024 - although progressing on
penalties in two FA Cup replays - Forest were without Chris Wood due to injury
and looked unconvincing in attack.
However they levelled when Anthony Elanga latched on to a simple through pass
down the middle from Morgan Gibbs-White, outpacing the United defence and poking
the ball beyond Martin Dubravka as he raced off his line and ended up hopelessly
stranded outside his own box.
The visitors remained sloppy in possession but looked dangerous whenever Fabian
Schar's diagonal pass found Anthony Gordon on the left; the number 10 a surprise
participant after Eddie Howe revealed on Friday morning he hadn't trained since
twisting his ankle. He trained later that day...
Schar then restored United's advantage when firing home his 13th Premier League
goal for the club following another Trippier set piece that Sven Botman headed
into his path; moving ahead of Steven Taylor to take the crown of our most
prolific defender in that competition.
However, the Swiss international sustained a foot injury during another forward
foray and played on despite visibly hobbling - only to be brainlessly saddled
with possession deep in his own half, Forest gaining the ball and Hudson-Odoi's
speculative shot bouncing off Lewis Miley to beat Dubravka.
2-2 at the break for the second Saturday running, half time brought no change of
personnel before an offside flag and VAR vindication denied Taiwo Awoniyi after
he thought his 50th minute shot had put the home side ahead for the first time
in the game.
The same player was then denied a penalty after a route one attack from Forest,
meeting a gigantic hoof from Sels and going down in the vicinity of Dubravka -
the referee's failure to point to the spot correctly backed up by his remote
colleague after a short interval.
Harvey Barnes replaced the anonymous Miggy Almiron (restored to the right) on
the hour, Gordon switching wings from the left and Newcastle instantly looking
more a threat.
The change paid dividends when a loose ball from Elanga was seized upon by
Bruno, who picked his spot to double his haul in a game when he noticeably
played further upfield in a revised formation that saw Miley lie deeper and
Trippier move infield on occasion to back him up.
The Brazilian was rightly and widely praised after the game but delighted and
frustrated in equal measure; often in the same passage of play. The two game
suspension that will kick in at some point promises to be a test of the
manager's credentials in trying to create chances from open play.
With Tino Livramento on to bolster the defence (but Burn retained and having an
improved second half), the Magpies survived a few scares and Callum Wilson was
frustrated on a couple of occasions as he tried to spearhead counter-attacks.
What became an additional seven minutes passed by without further goal incident
however; meaning that United had won back to back PL away fixtures for the first
time this season and claimed a quartet of consecutive away successes in all
competitions.
Our 2024 stats; won four, lost two, drawn one. Goals for 19, goals against 14.
Error-strewn but hugely enjoyable. Despite the frustrations of this season, we
sit just five points adrift of what at times was an improbable sequence of
results last time round.
The lower number of draws this season (three rather than 11) is one obvious
factor, but sides with similar aspirations to us are taking points off each
other and struggling for form. Financial pressures have altered the January
transfer window markedly this time round - and not just for ourselves.
Back our own shortcomings and it's easy to point fingers at a defence that is so porous, but for all of our
attacking endeavour in the middle of the field, an inability to tackle
meaningfully affords any Tom, Dick or Anthony a free run at our back line.
There's no evidence to believe that a clean sheet is within our grasp at present
- certainly until Nick Pope returns - but this 2024 incarnation of the
entertainers makes for compulsive viewing, if doing nothing for the health of
their supporters....
