A long punt downfield reached Isak in the centre of the
opposition half and he won his challenge with William Saliba, finding Anthony
with a sublime touch. Gordon's first time pass evaded Jurrien Timber and came to
Isak.
He strode forward and lashed a rising shot against the goalmouth as Ray vainly
dived to his right, the ball ricocheting back for Jacob Murphy to fire
into the unguarded net from the edge of right hand edge of the six yard box,
Gabriel Magalhaes unable to get near enough to block. 1-0

There seemed no danger as David Raya stood in his box,
ball in hand, with Isak and Gordon lining up on either side of the area. Declan
Rice trotted towards his own goal with Fabian Schar shadowing him and was
promptly dispossessed as his goalkeeper unwisely passed to his feet.
The ball bounced free into the path of Anthony Gordon, who had the simple
task of taking a touch, turning and shooting low to Raya's right and into the
bottom corner of the Gallowgate goal. 2-0

Eddie Howe said:
very 'eavy. very 'umble
"It’s an amazing feeling: It was a great night for us. It was
a tough game but tactically we were good - the players followed their
instructions to the letter. It’s definitely up there with our best
performances. There is a balance and a sweet spot in our game we need to get
right.
"The intention was to be aggressive and sometimes when you do that it
doesn't always work. Today it did. I thought it helped to solidify our plan. We
had to retreat at times but we were always in the game.
"The work started on Monday, which is quick. The Champions League last year
helped us to work on those two-day turnarounds. We do tweak things depending on
the opposition. We felt we needed more height in the team, we wanted solidity at
the back and we had to change in order to win the game.
"The players followed the instruction to the letter, they deserve the
credit. Fabian (Schar) had big distances to cover in his job, tracking
Declan Rice whether he dropped low or went wide or went central. At times he
went right across the pitch. He is a good athlete and is very capable of doing
it.
"We worked a lot on set-plays this week because we knew Arsenal’s threat
was so high. In the first leg we got lucky a couple of times and that influenced
our team selection – we needed the height of Sven
(Botman), Dan
(Burn) and Fabian
(Schar), especially as we were without Joelinton.
"Jason Tindall and the analysts deserve a lot of credit. They put a lot of
work into set-pieces and we defended them really well today.
"Tonight it was perfect - we were brave, we were aggressive, we were
everything we wanted to be against a very good team. The players have given us
everything, mentally and physically.
"We’re always competitive. You have to be. You have to go up
against your direct opponent and you have to be in their face. It wasn’t
necessarily a direct order to be aggressive but we have to stand our ground, we
have to win our battles. If that means a physical confrontation then, yeah, we
back ourselves to mix it with them.
"I’m very proud to lead this team and this club. You saw the
best of the city of Newcastle tonight, you saw the support for the players and
the love for the players.
"This group of players have been magnificent. They have gone hard and given
everything. I’m very proud to manage them. We have shown we can compete
against any team.
"You know the magnitude of the occasion, and the repercussions, good and
bad, but you can’t get caught up on that. The players were emotional, but in
the right way.
"We weren’t over the top, we weren’t irrational, we were in control of
everything we were doing. I think that comes with experience.
"Part of the team selection was to pick a team that could handle the
occasion and the environment it was going into. There were some really wise
heads on the pitch, really good leaders. I thought we looked a top team.
"Fate will naturally take its course, I don’t think we’ll engage on the
emotion of who we’ll play. That will come in time, of course.
“Two elite teams (Liverpool
and Spurs), two very good sides that we have faced this season, so we know
whoever we play will be a tough opponent, but I think it’s just a case at the
moment of being really pleased to have won today, continued our good momentum
and good form.
"At our very best levels, I think we’re a very good team, so I
think that should give us loads of confidence.
"It’s a long time (to wait for a trophy). We’d
love to end it and we’ll work as hard as we can and prepare right to try to do
that. It's huge. The first Wembley appearance was brilliant, it was
sort of unexpected, but a club like this and where it wants to be, we need to be
there regularly. We need to feel it's not a surprise.
"We're here on merit, our run's not been easy. Look at the teams
we've had to face; I think it's four Premier League teams if I'm right, but
we've done the hard yards and we've now got an opportunity.
"Hopefully we can learn from the last experience and improve our
performance. You have to learn from disappointing experiences and there are
definitely things we can learn. I think we learned a lot from that day. The
whole build-up to the game was long. Looking back, it was exhausting for me, so
I’m sure it was the same for the players.
"You learn different techniques to help keep your concentration and
focus, and not become tired because of the long build-up. There’s definitely
things that, as a club, we can look at and improve. We can help the players, and
make sure that when that day comes around, we’re able to help them to perform
and give our absolute best.
"Since I’ve been here the fans have been absolutely magnificent
and I’m so pleased they get another trip to Wembley. I just hope for them we
can get a trophy."
Mikel Arteta
said:
"We need to swallow this one. It is a tough one. We had so many expectations to believe that we could turn it around. We didn’t
generate momentum, especially in the first half, the game started in the first
action almost with them scoring and then the goal being denied.
"Then we had the
moment, two big moments, with Martin. We didn’t capitalise and in the next
action, they scored the goal and obviously the game shifted and then you need to
stay cool to score a goal as early as possible.
"We didn’t manage to do that in
the first half, had another big chance, and then in the second half, we started
to struggle as the game went by. We didn’t generate enough situations in the
final third and the game started to get away from us.
They’re a tough opponent....They’ve been really effective in the box in the last two games
against them and we haven’t. Overall, that was the main difference – it’s
true that today we were a bit more unsettled, especially when the game became
more chaotic or when they were very direct with their play.
"Normally we are much
more composed and today we lacked a bit of that, and the game went away from us...
physically we
were tired and you know we played so many games, we played so many games every
three days, and we knew that this was going to be a really high-intensity one.
"I
think emotionally as well, it was a very different game that we needed to get
there to believe right until the end that we could do it, and before that the
game got away from us."

A composed and confident
performance deservedly sent Newcastle United back to Wembley
for the second time in three years, after recording a third victory and clean
sheet over the Gunners in just four months to the delight of a St.James'
Park crowd who were in every way the twelfth man.
2-0 up after the first leg in North London, Eddie Howe named a five
man defence with Kieran Trippier in for Tino Livramento at right back
and Sven Botman lining up alongside Dan Burn and Fabian Schar with knee
injury victim Joelinton dropping out. The latter is set to be missing for
several weeks.
Any notions that United would attempt to stonewall the Gunners to protect
their lead were
quickly dispelled as a lightning counter attack ended with Alexander Isak
smashing the ball into the Leazes End net inside the first four minutes.
A lengthy VAR review saw that effort chalked off, but a goal wasn't long
in coming - Isak pinging another effort off the goal frame in the 19th
minute, but the rebound falling for Jacob Murphy to joyfully sweep home -
the goalscorer appropriately enough a native of Wembley.
Martin Odegaard had come just a whisker away from opening the scoring
though before then, with a shot that shaved Martin Dubravka's post - what
looked like a foul on the edge of the United area in the build-up
mercifully ignored by the officials. Going behind then would have been a
test for those on and off the pitch.
The visitors continued to enjoy much possession after Murphy's opener, but
genuinely heart-in-mouth moments were mercifully far and few between - and
the home side were able to threaten whenever they worked the ball artfully
out of defence; Isak twisting and shimmying around opponents.
Into the second half and Anthony Gordon was a whisker away with a
first-time effort from way out, but further daylight was put between the
sides when Gunners goalkeeper David Raya made an ill-advised attempt at
passing to Declan Rice just outside his own area.
Worried out of possession by Schar's intervention - the defender taking
his man to man marking role into uncharted territory - the ball then fell for
Gordon to roll home and open up an unassailable four goal advantage for
his side with 52 minutes on the clock.
Further home goals could have followed but the black and white wall held
firm to deny Arsenal a consolation strike before jetting off to Dubai to
lick their wounds.
The closing minutes saw fit-again pair Emil Krafth and Callum Wilson make
their comebacks from the bench - the former replacing Botman after a huge
display from the Dutchman that belied the time spent sidelined. A knee
knock was later confirmed as minor and not on the leg previously injured.
Trippier meanwhile was also a candidate for man of the match, completing
his first 90 minutes of the season and vindicating his selection with a
display reminiscent of his early games for the club. The the combativeness
of an ex-Spurs player against former rivals was evident, but the desire to
win shone through and set the tone for his colleagues.
Ecstatic home fans serenaded the visiting manager with "Mikel
Arteta, it must be the ball" - a reference to his ludicrous
comments following our first leg success at the Emirates. They then stayed
en masse to salute the squad on a brief lap of honour, having collectively restored belief that
had begun to waver among some after successive home league defeats.
For the manager and his staff too there was the satisfaction and relief at seeing a game
plan perfectly executed. Three times in a row now, Arteta has strutted into St.James'
- and slunk back out.
Confirmation on Thursday that we'll face a Liverpool side in the final
looking to collect the first of several possible trophies this season came
as no shock, although making the task even more monumental than before.
There's also the little matter of a dress rehearsal at Anfield beforehand.
Players and fans can take heart from tonight's
focused and controlled display though: a timely reminder that we're not just
going for a jolly this time - a message reiterated by Howe as he
sought to put the good and bad experiences of recent
domestic and European cup campaigns to good use.
