Laurent Robert Interview

Taken from his own official (French Language) website 11.9.01

Newcastle beat Middlesbrough 4-1 and you scored the last goal for the Magpies and prepared the other 3 goals. That's what you could call a busy game!

It's true, it went quite well. Although the first half was a bit difficult. Since we don't know each other that well yet and the team isn't 'greased' yet I got very few balls to profit from. From the two balls I received in the first half I got the penalty Shearer converted. When we went back to the dressing room Bobby Robson demanded that the others played a bit more towards me. From then on it all went much easier and I could show my qualities.

Can you remind us of your goal?

The Boro defender wants to give the ball back to his goalkeeper but as I am fighting him he slightly loses control. I am much faster than him, I pick up speed and find myself head-to-head with the goalie. I dribble around him and put the ball in the back of his net. That's it!

What do you think of Alan Shearer's return to the attack?

That's a very good thing for us. A player like him immediately puts the doubt into the opponents' defence. Together I think we can achieve great things. He is efficient in front of the goal and I hope I can profit from it by feeding him perfectly measured centre passes. With Alan, Bellamy and myself I think our attack shouldn't do too badly.

You were elected Man of the Match. What was the impact of your performance in the English media?

It doesn't stop. They already talked about me when I arrived here but now you can see me everywhere (in the media). I don't remember the name of the paper but they gave me a 9/10.

What are the objectives of the club for this year?

With the signings Newcastle has made this year you can aim for a good place in the table. By the way, Sylvain Distin will commit himself to Newcastle and he should sign his contract this afternoon. But then, I've come here to finish in the top three.

I will therefore try my best to take the club as high as possible. We played a good match on Saturday but we have to keep on working.

There are some big games coming up and we must not lessen in our efforts. On Wednesday night we'll be playing the first leg of the (Worthington) Cup at home against Brentford, a club from Div 2 or Div 3, and on Saturday we'll have ManU.

As we're playing at home we should win. With one outstanding match to be played, if we do well we could find ourselves second in the table. So we have to take the maximum points at home.

Will you start on Wednesday evening?

Normally I should be playing. And along with Alan Shearer there should be Shola Ameobi. On the whole the team should be the same as on Saturday.

It would seem that you're impatiently awaiting the Saturday match against Manchester United.

Yes, that's going to be a big match. I'm very excited over the idea of meeting ManU. I really hope to be at my very best for this great encounter but we'll be talking about it some more in the next interview on Thursday or Friday. Cheers.
