"Bubble burst" and "wheels come off" are two phrases that have started to grate in the last few weeks as our season has stuttered somewhat.
You can put it down to the manager of the month jinx or the official calendar curse - each month's featured player mysteriously becoming unavailable - or as many pundits have, Bellamy's injury.
Whatever, our spell at the top and cup dreams now seem just a distant
memory as we cling on to fourth spot.
In reality, a purple patch around Christmas propelled us to unexpected
heights and even in early December, a mid-table finish looked more likely
than European qualification.
With Bellamy still absent and Carl Cort searching for fitness and form, perhaps the time has come to look elswhere.
Aside from LuaLua, the much-touted Michael Chopra hit three goals for the
table-topping reserves this week - is it time to test him at a higher level?
