Renditions of the Blaydon Races had a special resonance on Saturday. "Just as they were standing" won't mean much in the Premiership now, after we stood on terracing possibly for the final time.

It was a poor game to mark the occasion and another couple of Premiership landmarks almost slipped by unnoticed.

Speed's excellent header was our 500th goal in the Premiership and the defeat was our 100th since we were promoted at the end of the 1992-93 season.

The notorious London winless record was extended, with one fan stripping off in the final minutes to give another angle to the phrase "losing streak".

Alan Shearer also maintained his own miserable record of just two of his 97 United goals being hit in the capital.

The penalty save denied Al of one more towards the magic 100. He and Bobby announced it was "only a matter of time" before the century was reached. Words we hope neither will regret.
