Senior international football returns to St.James' Park this week after a 5 year absence, when Albania trot out against an England team that appear to be heading for the World Cup on a magic carpet of fawning media praise.

In contrast to the poor crowds at the Euro 96 games, over 50,000 fans have snapped up seats, far in excess of the 39,887 who saw the last England game here in 1938 (a 4-0 win over Norway) and the 40,897 who saw Shearer beat Belgium on Wearside in 1999.

Owen will doubtless be odds-on to score but how many recall that he's struck before on this ground for England?

Back in November 1994, 11,010 were at St.James’ as England Under 15’s won the Victory Shield, beating Scotland  2-1. Owen of course scored the winner.

Given that at one time Greece, not Albania were due on Tyneside, even the most patriotic toon fan must be secretly glad that Owen won't be able
to humiliate Dabizas on his homeground.
