Update:
"Risks
& opportunities"
Speaking during a "We are United" fan event held at the
STACK outside SJP on Wednesday evening, the club's Chief Operating Officer Brad
Miller addressed the hot topic of the future home of Newcastle United:
"It is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity. Do we invest and transform St James’ as we see it
today on the site where we are? Or do we take that bold move and
think about moving?
"We want to make sure it is
a very robust process. So regardless of the outcome, I want to stand
up in front of everybody throughout the process and say, ‘This is
why it is a logical decision, with long-term competitiveness in
mind.’
"Because as you have heard a lot, it is all about revenue and
PSR. We have to work hard to make sure we give as much money as
possible to Paul (Mitchell) and the football side in order to
remain competitive on the field.
"In terms of next steps, we
are coming towards the end of the next stage, the briefing stage.
There are a lot of risks and opportunities at St James’.
"We have to take time to dig into those and make sure we’ve
got the devil in the detail — in terms of the programme, how long
it will take and what it will do for us in terms of revenue.
"We have also taken the
opportunity to look at what will a new stadium look like. It’s not
comparing apples with apples, they are not like for like. It’s
comparing apples with pears.
"The brilliant thing about
St James’ is it is in an iconic location, the atmosphere and the
competitive edge it gives the team on the pitch, and it has 52,000
seats already.
"But a new stadium doesn’t
have that and we’d have to pay for all those seats again. A new
stadium has the potential to earn a lot more, both on matchdays and
non-matchdays, a bit like STACK.
"It is giving us an indication that we can actually contribute
even more to the football club and football side if we had a new
stadium.
"The first choice is if we
stayed at St James' we have the 52,000 seats already. It comes with
significantly more money if we transform it and it will look
amazing. That's option one.
"Option two is if we were
to move away, and not too far away as we aren't going to stretch the
elastic band to the point of breaking.
"The second option we are looking at seriously as it does have
the potential to earn more than twice as much in terms of revenue,
compared to a transformation of St James' Park. And more seats, a
lot more seats potentially."
Also on stage were CEO
Darren Eales, CCO Peter Silverstone and Sporting Director Paul
Mitchell plus ex-Mags Shola Ameobi, Rob Lee and Papiss Cisse.
An informal show of hands during the event showed an overwhelming
amount of those present favouring a move to a new stadium rather
than rebuilding SJP.
Fans were invited to apply for free tickets via a club social media
announcement last Thursday (14th).
Whether those present would count as a representative selection of
the fanbase is a matter of opinion, but it wasn't restricted to
season ticket holders or members, so in theory anyone was able to
apply and attend.
U21s:
Senior
Cup progress
Newcastle U21s 5 Alnwick Town 1
Newcastle U21s began their Northumberland
Senior Cup defence with a resounding win over Alnwick Town in the Second Round at Whitley Park on Wednesday
night.
International call-ups saw a less experienced Magpies side fielded,
with debuts at this level for 18 year-olds Scott Bailey and Mo
Sedibeh.
The home side took the lead in the 20th minute when a cross from the right
was finished by Sedibeh with a low
shot from inside the six yard box.
The Northern League Second Division side levelled on 37 minutes to
the delight of their noisy travelling support, a loose ball in the
United box unwittingly diverted into his own net by defender Charlie
McArthur.
Sedibeh then got his second to restore the Magpies' lead in the
57th minute with a good run and finish.
2-1 became 3-1 three minutes later when substitute Alfie Harrison
picked his spot and a fourth Newcastle goal arrived on 69 minutes - Ellis
Stanton's shot was spilled by Matthew Alexander and Josh
Donaldson on hand to bury the rebound into the roof of the net.
Substitute Johnny Emerson grabbed United's fifth during the third
minute of time added on, rounding the 'keeper to complete the scoring.
Team: Harris, Charlton (Heffernan 83), R.Powell, Stanton,
H.Powell, McArthur, Palmer, Huntley, Donaldson, Bailey (Al.Harrison
46), Sedibeh (Emerson 83).
Subs n/u: Ad.Harrison, Munda.
Booked: Charlton, Stanton.
ATFC: Alexander, Patterson (Payne 79), Eggleston, Iley, Laws,
Shepherd, Baston, Aziakanou (Dobie 79), Ogidan (Clark 79), Anderson
(Walker 72), Shell (Potts 72).
Subs n/u: None.
Booked: Iley, Payne.
Captaining Alnwick was ex-Magpie Yannick Aziakanou.
Referee: Adam Kain.
Crowd: not given but looked around 350 on a perishingly cold
night when temperatures dropped to -2C.
As was the case last season, NUFC advertised free admission for
season ticket holders, but Whitley Park turnstile staff were
insistent that this was an "all pay" fixture with cash
only accepted.

Hitmen honoured
The
2024 Newcastle United Foundation Dinner took place at SJP on
Tuesday evening, with Eddie Howe, Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn among
those present.
In addition to the various community awards given out, two former
players were belatedly inducted into the club's Hall of Fame - Mick
Quinn and Len White.
Quinn hit 63 goals in 133 appearances, while 1955 FA Cup winner
White scored 153 times in 269 games - a total bettered only by
Jackie Milburn and Alan Shearer.
Internationals:
Miggy on target
Miguel Almiron (Paraguay):
Tue 19.11.2024 Bolivia (a) drew 2-2 WCQ
Miggy retained his starting place for a 64th senior cap, netting his
first international goal since June 2023.
0-1 behind at the break, Almiron's low shot from inside the box
levelled before Bolivia regained the lead in El Alto. The Newcastle
man was then replaced on 86 minutes, after his side were reduced to
10 men.
A frantic finale then saw Paraguay level during what ended up as an
additional ten minutes.
Thu 14.11.2024 Argentina (h) won 2-1 WCQ
Another start for Miggy as Paraguay came from behind to shock Argentina in
Asuncion. He was subbed in the 89th minute.
Bruno Guimaraes (Brazil):
Tue 19.11.2024 Uruguay (h) drew 1-1 WCQ
Bruno started the game in Salvador and was subbed in the 86th minute.
Thu 14.11.2024 Venezuela (a) drew 1-1 WCQ
The Newcastle midfielder was included in the starting lineup for a World Cup
Qualifier staged in Maturin, completing 82 minutes of the tie.
Alexander Isak (Sweden):
Tue 19.11.2024 Azerbaijan (h) won 6-0 NL
Isak won his 50th cap and played the full 90 minutes in Stockholm but was
unable to net for what would have been a sixth successive game for club and
country.
A frustrating evening for the striker saw a legitimate- looking strike that
would have put Sweden 4-0 ahead at half time ruled out by a VAR call, before
his penalty kick was saved early in the second period.
Sat 16.11.2024 Slovakia (h) won 2-1 NL
Missing the last two Nations League games due to injury, Alexander Isak made
up for lost time to seal promotion for Sweden in the Nations League on
Saturday night - setting up one goal and scoring the other. He played the full 90 minutes in
his home town of Stockholm.
Martin Dubravka (Slovakia):
Tue 19.11.2024 Estonia (h) won 1-0 NL
The Magpie was omitted from Tuesday's matchday squad in Trnava - not the
first time that Dubravka has had a reduced shift of this nature
internationally.
Sat 16.11.2024 Sweden (a) lost 1-2 NL
The goalkeeper was named in the starting line-up and played 90 minutes as he
completed a half-century of senior international caps.
Isaac Hayden (Jamaica):
Tue 19.11.2024 USA (a) lost 2-4 CNL
It was a case of "beat me in St. Louis" for Isaac, who made his first start for
the Reggae Boyz and completed the full 90 minutes.
Thu 14.11.2024 USA (h) lost 0-1
CNL
A full international debut aged 29 for the forgotten man of Gallowgate, eight years after his last appearance
for England U21s. Isaac arrived from the bench at half time in Kingston and
was booked.
Lewis Miley (England U21s):
Mon 18.11.2024 Netherlands (a) drew 1-1 FR
There was a first U21 start for the 18 year-old Magpie in Almere, playing in
an advanced role and completing 55 minutes - taking his leave with England
1-0 ahead.
Fri 15.11.2024 Spain (a) drew 0-0 FR
Following his elevation from the U20s to the U21s, Lewis began on the
bench against Spain at La Linea de la Concepcion. He was brought on after 68 minutes.
Leo Shahar, Sean Neave, Trevan Sanusi (Eng U18s):
Mon 18.11.2024 Germany (n) lost 0-1 FR
Another loss in Oliva for England with Leo captaining the side and Sean in
the starting line-up. Trevan appeared as a 66th minute replacement.
Fri 15.11.2024 Poland (n) lost 1-3 FR
Defeat for the U18s in the Spanish town of Oliva, with Sanusi in the
starting line-up, Neave appearing from the bench and Leo an unused
substitute.
Travis Hernes (Norway U20s):
Mon 18.11.2024 Chile (a) won 2-1 FR
The Newcastle midfielder was named in the starting line-up for this friendly
success in Santiago.
Mo Waddani (Libya U20s):
Thu 14.11.2024 Tunisia (n) lost 1-2 ACNQ
Mo was an unused substitute.
The 16 year-old Magpies winger is in the Libyan squad for a quartet of U20
African Cup of Nations qualifiers staged in Egyptian city of Ismailia.
Thu 20.11.2024 Egypt U20 (a) Ismailia ACNQ
Sun 23.11.2024 Morocco U20 (n) Ismailia ACNQ
Wed 26.11.2024 Algeria U20 (n) Ismailia ACNQ
Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento (England)
Sun 17.11.2024 Ireland (h) won 5-0 NL
The Magpie trio all started at Wembley, both full backs completing 90
minutes as England were confirmed as Group B2 winners and sealed promotion.
Gordon played 74 minutes and marked his ninth senior England cap with a
first goal at this level, steering in after Livramento's centre wasn't
cleared properly.
Sunday was the first time that three current Newcastle players started for
England since April 1997, when David Batty, Robert Lee and Alan Shearer all
lined up against Georgia in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
It's also one day off 30 years since a trio of Magpies were picked for
England at Wembley; Lee joined by Steve Howey and Peter Beardsley for a
friendly match against Nigeria.
Livramento's maiden senior selection made him the 42nd player to
appear for England while a Magpie.
Thu 14.11.2024 Greece (a) won 3-0 NL
Gordon was included in the starting line-up at the Olympic Stadium in
Athens, club mate Lewis Hall arriving from the bench at half time for his maiden
senior cap.
Gordon was withdrawn after 66 minutes while fellow Magpie Tino Livramento
was an
unused substitute.
Odysseas Vlachodimos (Greece):
Sun 17.11.2024 Finland (a) won 2-0 NL
The Newcastle goalkeeper won his 48th full cap and kept a clean sheet in
Helsinki.
Thu 14.11.2024 England (h) lost 0-3 NL
An unwanted mention on the scoresheet for Odysseas, who was helpless to
prevent Jude Bellingham's shot rebounding off a post and deflecting off the
United goalkeeper's back and into the Greek net.
Sandro Tonali (Italy)
Sun 17.11.2024 France (h) lost 1-3 NL
Sandro retained his place in the side on his return to the San Siro,
completing the entire game.
Thu 14.11.2024 Belgium (a) won 1-0 NL
A close range finish early on saw the United midfielder net his first senior
international goal, giving Italy victory in Brussels that confirmed their
qualification for the last eight of the Nations League.
Alex Murphy (Ireland U21s):
Sun 17.11.2024 Sweden (n) won 3-2 FR
Victory in Marbella for ex-Mag Jimmy Crawford's side, with Alex completing
the entire game.
Thu 14.11.2024 Sweden (n) lost 0-2 FR
The United defender completed the opening 78 minutes of this kickabout in
Marbella.

West Ham
(h)
Eddie Howe's side return to Premier
League action on Monday, hosting the Hammers in an 8pm
kick-off at SJP, live on Sky Sports.
Following wins over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, Newcastle are
looking to register three successive PL victories for the first time since
September 2023.
Team: Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles
remain out, with Emil Krafth joining them on the sick list. The
availability of Kieran
Trippier is uncertain, but Callum Wilson has told fans that he's in line
to make his first appearance of the season against West Ham.
Dan Burn will serve a one match ban, while both Fabian Schar and Joelinton
are one booking off a similar fate.
Two defenders are set for appearance landmarks: Schar
is currently one game off 200 games in all competitions for the club, while
Tino Livramento will reach a half-century of league and cup
outings.
Alexander Isak will be looking to score for a fourth successive PL game and
the fifth in all competitions - both of which would be for the first time as
a Magpie.
The last Newcastle player to score in more than four successive PL games was
Joe Willock, who netted in seven successive PL appearances during 2020/21.
Along with Spurs, West Ham are Isak's most favoured opponent, netting five
times against them so far.
Callum Wilson also has five Toon strikes to his name when facing the
Hammers, but has hit half a dozen when facing both Burnley and Everton.

tie wasn't chosen for live TV transmission, meaning that it will be on Sky

Born Or Died:
1893 Harry Harrison born, Redcar.
(1912-13)
Beginning his playing career at
Grangetown Athletic, goalkeeper Harry signed up as
an amateur for United in February 1912.
However he failed to break into the senior squad
and left Gallowgate the following year, joining
Middlesbrough.
Featuring for the Teessiders during wartime
matches, Harrison became understudy to the
long-serving Tim Williamson and debuted in the
Football League during October 1919.
Moving on to Darlington in 1924, Harry
subsequently played for both Durham City and
Hartlepools United before returning to the Quakers
in 1928 for another year.
Returning to work in the fishing industry,
Harrison passed away in October 1975.
1934 Death of Jimmy Lawrence, 49.
(1904-22)
United's all-time record appearance maker passed away in his
native Glasgow.
1950 Thomas Brooks Craig
born, Penilee, Glasgow. (1974-78)
Scottish international midfielder who was spotted playing for
Aberdeen by Sheffield Wednesday, who paid what was then a record £100K fee
for a teenager to bring him to Hillsborough in 1969.
The same fee took Tommy on to Tyneside in 1974, his debut coming against
Carlisle on Boxing Day and a first goal for the club against Spurs a month
later.
A stylish midfielder, Craig played in the 1976 League Cup Final loss at
Wembley to Manchester City and won his only senior international cap later
that year in a friendly win over Switzerland at Hampden Park.
Transferred to Aston Villa during our relegation season, later moves took him
on to Swansea City, Carlisle United and Hibernian.
Craig began his coaching career at Easter Road in 1985 as assistant to former
Magpie John Blackley, later moving on to work as David Hay's number two at
Celtic.
A return to Pittodrie came with Roy Aitken before becoming Scotland U21 boss
and overseeing other SFA coaching courses.
1998 saw him back at SJP, appointed by Kenny Dalglish (whom Craig had played
alongside for Scotland schoolboys).
He remained there until 2006, mostly working as reserve team
coach but also briefly filling in as caretaker manager between Dalglish's
departure and Ruud Gullit's arrival.
Following his departure from Newcastle, Craig teamed up with John Collins at
Hibernian, but his second stint there ended with him following Collins out
of the door - having succeeded him briefly as caretaker boss.
The pair then pitched up at Belgians Sporting Charleroi in late 2008, although
they were only in charge until the end of the season.
On his 59th birthday in 2009, Tommy was confirmed as the new boss of Charleroi
- also known as the Zebras, due to their black and white striped shirts.
That lasted barely six months though before he was dismissed, later returning
to football as the assistant boss of St. Mirren.
When Danny Lennon left in May 2014, Craig was made manager
but had been replaced by Gary Teale before Christmas after just three wins
in 19 games.
1968 Mark Robinson born, Manchester.
(1993-94)
Right back who arriving from Barnsley at a cost of £450K in
March 1993 as part of Kevin Keegan's squad strengthening
programme, as promotion to the Premiership began to look
inevitable that season.
While his fellow new arrivals Scott Sellars and Andy Cole
both had injury problems of their own, Robbo however saw his
own hopes of making an impact on Tyneside disappear in a
pre-season match at Hartlepool in July 1993.
A tackle from 'Pools defender Ian McGuckin left the
Newcastle player with a badly broken leg that placed his
career in jeopardy.
And while Robbo returned to play for the club in January
1994, he was never the same again and had crucially lost his
pace.
Newcastle actually made a profit when Swindon paid £600K for
Robinson in July 1994 and he went on to be a good servant at
the County Ground until a hernia problem forced him to give
up full-time football in 2002.
Dropping down to non-league, he played for Chippenham Town
before finally retiring.
1976 Sam Aiston born, Newcastle.
(1994-95)
Winger who came through United's junior and reserve
ranks but never made it to the first team before his
release by United.
A five year spell at the mackems followed, during which
time he also found himself out on loan at various times
to Chester City, Stoke City and Shrewsbury Town.
The Shrews signed Sam on a free transfer when his
contract expired in 2000 and he went on to make over 180
appearances for them, settling in Shropshire.
Later moves saw him feature for Tranmere Rovers,
Northampton Town, Burton Albion, Wrexham (for whom he's
pictured above) Stafford Rangers, Hednesford Town and
Gainsborough Trinity.
He later trained as a primary school teacher and
returned to take up a post at his former Shrewsbury
stamping ground.
1982 Jonathan Mann born, Blyth.
(1998-2001)
Forward signed on pro forms during the reign of Kenny
Dalglish, who played alongside Michael Chopra at Academy
level.
Following his release by Newcastle, Jonny had trials at
Bournemouth, Darlington and an unidentified team in
South Korea.
He played for Bishop Auckland and Bedlington Terriers,
returning to his boyhood club Blyth Town and worked at
the Alcan aluminum plant until it closed down.
1995 Jamie Sterry born, Newcastle.
(2012-20)
Right
back who featured in the 2012 Milk Cup Tournament in
Northern Ireland and debuted at U18 level in a 1-0 home win
over Stoke City that September.
Sterry's reserve bow came against Reading in January 2013,
but he lasted only 15 minutes before being shown a straight
red.
Fitness problems affected his availability the following
season but he was promoted to the senior ranks in March
2015, signing his first professional contract.
Named on the bench various times, Jamie's
first taste of senior football came in the 5-1 home win
over Spurs in May 2016 that followed
Newcastle's relegation.
Completing his first 90 minutes in a 2-0 home win
over Cheltenham Town in the League Cup,
Sterry signed a new four year deal.
Loaned to League One Coventry City, a string of notable
displays included scoring in the FA Cup against Morecambe.
Returning to SJP to play in the Championship, groin
issues saw him restricted to Cup outings and loans to Crewe
Alexandra followed in both 2018 and 2019.
The arrival of Steve Bruce in
2019 saw Sterry feature in pre-season but fail to make any
further appearances before being released.
Joining South Shields and improving his match fitness he
moved to Hartlepool United in December 2020 - helping them to
gain promotion to League Two via the playoffs. Remaining at Pools until they were relegated to the National League in April 2023
he then signed for League Two Doncaster Rovers.

their longest trip of the season.
Making a six hour train journey to London a day earlier
and staying over, they arrived in Cardiff at Noon on
matchday for a 2.30pm start.
Retracing their footsteps after the game, they finally
returned to Tyneside on Sunday afternoon - a round trip

A week after Alan Brown and Imre
Varadi destroyed Charlton Athletic, United's rapid front
duo similarly led the Hatters a merry dance and two Varadi
crosses were finished by loan signing Brown - the first
after just 45 seconds.
Second half goals from Mal Donaghy and David Moss,
together with Brown limping off injured appeared to have
blown it, but a late strike from Varadi sent the crowd
berserk as Luton's season long unbeaten away record ended.
Brown later said "I heard the cheers as I came back

Footage of this match was later shown in court as the
goalkeeper and his accomplices stood accused of match

What was never questioned was the collective complicity
that would have been required for a side including
future Magpies John Barnes and Ian Rush to be so poor in
the first 45.

marvellous place to play your football.
"I hope over the next

"Also, I would like to
