PL2:
Foxes test tonight

Following a 3-1 loss away to West Bromwich Albion on Monday night, Newcastle U21s are in PL2 action once again tonight when they host Leicester City.

It's a 7pm start at Whitley Park and the usual PL admission arrangements apply - free to season ticket holders or else £3 adults and £1 concessions payable at the gate in cash.

Premier League:

Palace (h) confirmed

The outstanding Premier League fixture between Newcastle and Crystal Palace will be played at SJP on Wednesday April 16th with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The original fixture date was rendered irrelevant by Newcastle's involvement in the Carabao Cup Final.

That new date comes between the Premier League home game with Manchester United and visit to Aston Villa - the latter falling on Easter weekend.

FA Cup:
Seagulls on Sunday

Newcastle's FA Cup Fifth Round home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion will be a 1.45pm kick-off on Sunday March 2nd live on ITV1.

That's one of four all-Premier League ties in this round, with the Seagulls already victorious at Gallowgate this season - 1-0 winners back in October.

While United saw off League Two Bromley 3-1 at home and League One Birmingham City 3-2 away, Albion made it this far thanks to a 4-0 success at Championship Norwich City and a 2-1 home win over Chelsea.

Fifth Round:

Friday 28.02.2025:
Aston Villa v Cardiff City (8pm) ITV

Sat 01.03.2025:
Crystal Palace v Millwall (12.15pm) BBC1
Preston North End v Burnley (12.15pm) iPlayer
Bournemouth v Wolves (3pm)
Manchester City v Plymouth Argyle (5.45pm) ITV4

Sun 02.03.2025:
Newcastle United v Brighton (1.45pm) ITV1
Manchester United v Fulham (4.30pm) BBC1

Monday 03.03.2025:
Nottingham Forest v Ipswich Town (7.30pm) ITV4

This will be the seventh game between the two sides in this competition, with the Magpies winless since 1930:

2023/24 (h) R5
2012/13 lost 0-2 (a) R3
2011/12 lost 0-1 (a) R4
1985/86 lost 0-2 (h) R3
1982/83 lost 0-1 (h) R3R
1982/83 drew 1-1 (a) McDermott R3
1929/30 won 3-0 (h) Gallacher 3 R5

The words "Trelford Mills" doubtless flashed through the minds of those of supporters of similar vintage to us...

Carabao Cup:
Wembley KO confirmed

Newcastle's Carabao Cup Final tie against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March 16th will be a 4.30pm kick-off.

Pins:
This are two Tone!

New issues from badge guru Magpin commemorate the goals scored by Anthony Gordon in both Carabao Cup semi-final ties against Arsenal earlier this season.

On sale here
are the first leg edition, capturing Gordon's corner flag pose and his scarf twirling celebration badge from the second leg.

We have a pair of
the badges to give away and to be in with the chance of winning, send your answer to this question via email to [email protected] by 9pm on Wednesday February 19th, subject line of Magpin.

Which current Newcastle team mate was playing for the opposition when Gordon scored his maiden Magpie goal back in May 2023?

No age limit, open to anyone anywhere in the world but delivery only to UK addresses. One entry per person.

PS: Also available to buy now from Magpin is a bumper set of assorted current season NUFC player stickers:

Squad:
Contract talks for trio

Speaking to the media on Friday morning, Eddie Howe confirmed that contract talks were in progress with Fabian Schar, whose current deal expires in June.

Fellow defender Emil Krafth is similarly engaged in negotiations to remain a Magpie.

That follows a Sky Sports interview with Martin Dubravka in which he revealed that he's close to agreeing an extension to his own SJP contract.

Assuming both players put pen to paper, that leaves Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson in the final months of their SJP deals, along with goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie.

The Athletic have written in recent days that a new contract offer for Wilson is unlikely.

Carabao Cup
:
Wembley ticket sale

Tickets for Newcastle's Carabao Cup Final visit to Wembley went on sale to the third group of eligible season ticket holders at Noon on Friday.

Find full details of the process online here

Ballot details for the other pots will be emailed to those involved in due course. It appears that there will be a pot 4 ballot at least.

NUFC occupy the same (West) side as in 2023, with an allocation of 31,939 compared to 32,761 two seasons ago - no reason for the downsizing has been given.

Hopes that the engineering work on the East Coast Main Line planned that weekend would be postponed proved to be false, with diversions via the Durham coast and bus replacement services for Durham and Darlington passengers. More details are online here

(For anyone planning on driving to York and catching a train from there, be aware that the station car park closes permanently on March 14th for building work).

The winners of this season's Carabao Cup Final take a place at the playoff stage of the European Conference League - unless they have already qualified for Europe via a different route.

2024/25:
Manchester City (a)

Following their Carabao Cup and FA Cup diversions, Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday when they visit the Etihad Stadium.

Kick-off is an old fashioned, non-televised 3pm and United's 3,000 tickets are sold out.

Eddie Howe's side go in search of a club record-equaling fifth successive PL away win, although they'll need to win for the first time at this ground in that competition in order to achieve that.

This will be United's 20th attempt at doing that - so far they've taken just two points from a possible 57.

The last Magpie to score a Premier League goal at the Etihad was DeAndre Yedlin back in September 2018 - 510 minutes ago, or eight and a half hours.

In all competitions, Newcastle have won six successive matches away from Gallowgate going into this game - their best run of form since managing seven in a row on the road back in 1994.

Team: Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn will return but Sven Botman won't be risked.

Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes remain out - there's no time frame for Lascelles, but Joelinton should be back within a month and Barnes in the next fortnight or so.

Facing City would complete a century of Premier League appearances for Newcastle by Callum Wilson

MCFC: Rodri remains out, with doubts over Nathan Ake, Jeremy Doku, Nico Gonzalez and Ederson.

City lost the home leg of their Champions League playoff against Real Madrid 2-3 on Tuesday, with the second meeting at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Both Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji picked up knocks and were forced off against Real Madrid.

Referee: Andy Madley - a third PL game involving NUFC so far this season for the West Yorkshire whistler, after the 3-3 home draw with Liverpool and 2-1 win at Spurs.

VAR:
John Brooks - a second VAR shift this month for a game featuring Newcastle following the Carabao Cup home win over Arsenal when Alexander Isak's opener was ruled out due to a marginal offside call.

Days after the Premier League named him in the U21 section of our revised player list, Galway United have confirmed the sale of Kyle Fitzgerald to the Magpies.

The 18 year-old winger played for United U21s in pre-season as a trialist and signs for an undisclosed fee.

Fitzgerald was one of three additions noted in the PL list, the other two as follows:

Fraser Harper 18 year-old midfielder formerly with Wolves who joined United earlier this season following a trial and has appeared at U18 and U21 level so far.

Baran Yidliz* Midfielder reportedly secured from Turkish side Genclerbirligi after celebrating his 18th birthday earlier this month.

Update
:
John Tudor RIP

We're sad to report that the death of former Magpie John Tudor has been announced, at the age of 78.

Playing local football in his Derbyshire, John was briefly on the books of Middlesbrough before joining Coventry City from Ilkeston Town during 1964.

Winning a Second Division Championship medal at Highfield Road in 1967, a £65,000 switch to Sheffield United came the following year and Tudor hit a brace against Newcastle during a League Cup tie in 1969.

By January 1971 John was a Magpie - as David Ford and John Hope headed to Bramall Lane - and he initially played in a forward line with Pop Robson, also featuring alongside  Wyn Davies and Keith Dyson.

The arrival of Malcolm Macdonald on Tyneside before the following season proved to be pivotal, a productive partnership seeing John create many goals for Supermac and score a fair few himself.

Appearing in the 1974 FA Cup Final defeat to Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, John did win silverware with United in the shape of the Texaco Cups.

However, his FA Cup contributions are well remembered, not least a diving header against Forest in the riot game that was expunged from the records, when the FA ordered a replay - that "goal" perhaps more celebrated than any of the 73 he scored that did count.

Tudor's own personal favourites were also both headers: at home to Manchester United and the other against Liverpool at Anfield. Tragically, that part of his game looks to have affected him in later life.

Outlasting Macdonald at SJP by a few months, Tudor's 220nd and final appearance came in 1976 before moving on to Stoke City and then Belgians side AA Gent.

A knee injury prompted his retirement in 1978 and he served as coach and later manager of North Shields, also entering the pub trade in Northumberland.

Later a publican back in his hometown of Ilkeston, John became involved in summer coaching camps for American youngsters during 1991 and emigrated permanently to the USA during 1994, living in St Paul, Minnesota.

Recovering from a heart attack in 2014, sad news of an Alzheimer's diagnosis came four years later, prompting a rendition of "Hallelujah, John Tudor" from Newcastle supporters during the Boxing Day 2018 visit to Anfield.

John returned to Tyneside in April 2019 and was warmly applauded when presented to the St. James' Park crowd, flanked by Supermac and Bob Moncur.

Update:
Coach arrival

Newcastle have reportedly filled the vacancy of U21 Assistant Coach by appointing Robbie Stockdale, who was most recently on the staff at Barrow.

Now 45 year, Redcar-born Stockdale adds Tyneside to his CV following previous stints on Teesside as a Boro player and Wearside as a youth team coach and caretaker boss of the mackems on three occasions.

Robbie arrives to assist Diarmuid O'Carroll, who was recruited by United from St.Mirren last September as U21 Lead Coach.

2024/25:
Nottingham Forest (h)

Following Premier League and Carabao Cup successes at the City Ground for Newcastle, Eddie Howe and Nuno Espirito Santo lock horns for the third time this season on Sunday week, February 23rd.

Kick-off at SJP is at 2pm, live on Sky Sports.

Following losses to Bournemouth and Fulham, United are aiming to avoid three successive PL home defeats for the first time since February 2021 under Steve Bruce.

On This Day in History
14th February

Born Or Died:

1930 Harold Houlahan born, Coundon (1951)
Harry began his playing career at Durham City before moving to SJP, but the winger failed to make a first team appearance and signed for Oldham Athletic.

Returning north in 1953 with Darlington, Harry then joined Spennymoor United two years later and again lived in Coundon.

1951 Kevin Keegan
born, Armthorpe.

(1982-84[player], 1992-97 & 2008-09[Manager])

Probably Peglers Brass Works' most famous player, Newcastle had been alerted to a promising youngster on Scunthorpe's books, but failed to act before Liverpool paid £35K for his services in 1971.

Punishing us on numerous occasions while clad in a red shirt (most notably the 1974 FA Cup Final), Kevin Keegan moved on to SV Hamburg in 1977, returning to England in 1980 with Southampton.

Arriving at SJP in August 1982 thanks in part to a deal brokered between United and S&N Breweries, his effect was immeasurable in revitalising the club.

England manager Bobby Robson attended his debut, sold-out crowd (officially 36,000) seeing QPR beaten 1-0 thanks a Keegan goal. Three months earlier less than 11,000 fans saw Rangers win 4-0 at Gallowgate.

However, that season wasn’t all plain sailing, KK forced to publicly back under-fire boss Arthur Cox after a mid-season dip in form.
Two defeats in the last ten games put us on the fringe of the promotion race, but in pre- playoff days that wasn’t quite enough.

The eve-of-season departure of Imre Varadi was quickly forgotten as Peter Beardsley arrived, and along with Keegan and Waddle went on to score a combined total of sixty five league goals in 1983/84.

A memorable farewell at home to Brighton when the trio all netted was followed by a home friendly with Liverpool, after which a chopper landed on the centre circle, to spirit KK away into retirement.

Just less than eight years later he returned though, to rescue a club who had lost the impetus provided by promotion and were again languishing in Division Two.

Again the uplifting effect was instant, with a home attendance of 30,000 for his first game in charge – a 3-0 win over Bristol City.

However, it’s often forgotten that the rest of that season was a struggle, with the threat of a first-ever demotion to the third tier very real until the final week.

Off-field tensions also saw further intrigue – most notably a walkout as his team were playing Swindon Town amid accusations of broken promises by Newcastle’s new owners, the Hall family.

That was all forgotten the following season though as United began at a cracking pace - winning their first eleven league games before succumbing at home to Grimsby.

Having secured promotion and taking the title, KK's side then gave notice of their intention to gatecrash the Premier League with a 7-1 dismantling of Leicester City.

Dispensing with David Kelly, KK re-signed Beardsley to spur Andy Cole on to a record- breaking seasonal tally of 41 goals.

That secured a third-place finish, to be followed by sixth and second place finishes.

However, a visibly-aged Keegan resigned in January 1997 following an FA Cup tie at Charlton, having failed to deliver the title to Tyneside and six months after persuading the club to squeeze their finances in order to sign star striker Alan Shearer.

Various reasons were given, but the demands and restrictions of working for a PLC remain the most plausible.

Despite a line about no longer wishing to be involved in football management, KK returned within nine months, at Fulham.

Subsequent spells in charge of the England national side and Manchester City came to an end in 2005, after which Keegan developed the “Soccer Circus” project at Glasgow’s Braehead retail park.

All that though changed in January 2008, when manager Sam Allardyce was relieved of his duties, with the club sitting 11th in the table but without a win in five games.

News of Keegan's return to United came in the hours leading up to a home replay in the FA Cup against Stoke City.

And although his arrival in the Directors Box inspired United into a 4-1 victory, he'd have to wait until his tenth game back in charge before seeing the team win again.

A run of four wins and two draws from six games steadied the ship and the manner of United's performances led to renewed optimism among fans, that two late season defeats only partially diminished.

Behind the scenes though, things were less than perfect, with the arrival of Dennis Wise as Executive Director (Football).

KK's comments after the final day loss at Everton about the team being a million miles away from competing at the right end of the table would also prove to be significant.

Just four games into the following season and he'd gone - after a tumultuous time while transfer dealings were pushed through that left Keegan in no doubt as to his lack of power or influence.

These included the sale of James Milner, the purchase of Xisco, the loan of Nacho Gonzalez and attempts to sell other first team players as the transfer deadline loomed. The wish list of players KK had prepared also looked to have been used as toilet paper in the executive washroom.

With Tyneside in uproar and Chris Hughton becoming interim boss, attempts at brokering a peace deal between United and KK failed.

KK's departure was settled by a PL Tribunal in October 2009, ruling that KK had been constructively dismissed and was therefore entitled to a £2m payout.

By then, the club were engaged in a promotion challenge following relegation and also attempting to find a new owner. They achieved the former but not the latter.

After then, KK worked as a TV pundit, applauded by Toon fans in 2011 as he walked round the pitch in an FA Cup tie at Stevenage.

He then returned to Tyneside for a special one-off reunion match that October, taking charge of a NUFC Veterans side against Liverpool.

Frequent visits to the region would follow, receiving a rapturous reception at the Sage in 2018 as part of a tour promoting his new autobiography - a book that savaged the Ashley regime.

2021 then found KK giving The Athletic an audience to say that:

"The best day they'll have is when he (Mike Ashley) sells the club, because anybody - and I mean anybody - can run it better...It cannot be run worse than it is."

"I always watch them and there's a strange part of you that wants them to do well and another part of you that doesn't."

"The problem with Mike Ashley is that he didn't know what he was buying. He doesn't get it....he should employ people who do....he just needs to put bright people in charge."

"It just needs running. It needs direction, leadership. It needs understanding of what it is. It needs some care."

PS: Along with fellow ex-Mag John Barnes, KK was honoured by the Royal Mail in 2013 with a series of stamps depicting a dream team of eleven football legends.

Bolton levelled again through Garry Jones, only for future Trotter Alan Gowling to retake the lead. Paul Jones then earned the Second Division side a replay at SJP - although it took two attempts before United beat them, at neutral Elland Road.

The reserves conceded six goals for the second successive league game in a remarkable game away to Everton.

United were looking to bounce back from a 0-6 mauling at Manchester United but soon conceded before Dan Taylor levelled.

Everton went ahead again only for Phil Airey to level just before half-time. The Toffees then went 3-2 up but United hit back through a long-distance effort from substitute Ryan McGorrigan for 3-3.

Parity proved to be fleeting though; Paul Dummett deflecting a shot in before two more home goals saw Everton win 6-3.

A linesman's flag and poor finishing denied United a first leg lead against a side who warmed up with a 1-1 draw at non-league Whitley Bay four days earlier.

Papiss Cisse was twice caught out by offside flags, although it was Moussa Sissoko who was wrongly penalised in the first half before squaring the ball for Cisse to score.

The other linesman denied the pair again after the break when Sissoko took advantage of a defender slipping and crossed for our number 9 to volley home but TV footage later showed he had got marginally ahead of the defence.

However, there were no such excuses for three other glaring misses from our misfiring striker, although Metalist 'keeper Oleksandr Goryainov did well each time.
