Newcastle's Premier League Cup Group campaign ended in defeat on
Monday evening, although their progress to the last 16 was already
assured.
Two first half goals at the John Smiths Stadium were enough for the
Terriers to secure top spot in Group G and a home meeting with Stoke
City in the knockout stages.
The Magpies meanwhile must settle for a trip to Fulham after
finishing as runners-up. The PL2 meeting of the sides in London
earlier this season ended 3-1 to the Cottagers; the
return on Tyneside next week.
Town went ahead in the 26th minute when Jaheim Headley took a
crossfield pass
from Loick Ayina out on the left flank. Heading into the box and
jinking inside an opponent he then shot powerfully past goalkeeper Will Brow n.
Huddersfield doubled that lead on 39 minutes, Ben Midgley's
in-swinging free kick from the right hand side of the box met by an
unmarked Danny Grant, who headed home at the back post.
Visiting coach
Elliott Dickman made a trio of replacements during the second half, sending on
fit-again duo Ryan Barrett and Mo Sangare - the latter sidelined
through injury since 2020.
And between their introductions, there was a belated debut for
Mexican U23 international forward Santiago
Munoz, who signed for United last August.
PLC Group Winners: Derby County, Fulham, Huddersfield Town, Boro,
West Bromwich Albion.
PLC Runners-up: Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, Newcastle, QPR,

still awaited.
