There
was PL2 action at Whitley Park for the last time this season on
Friday evening, as Newcastle U21s were beaten by their Leeds United
counterparts.
After an incident-free first half when neither goalkeeper was
troubled, the visitors went ahead thanks to a 67th minute penalty
conversion by Luca Thomas.
A home player was apparently penalised for handball, but the offence
was anything but obvious and given on the say-so of a linesman -
match referee James Oldham closer to the incident and giving a goal
kick.
Thomas then doubled that lead in the 80th minute when left
unchallenged on the edge of the box to fire home - the visiting
player adding to goals against Newcastle at junior level in the
previous two seasons.
Newcastle's best chance of a goal had come at 0-0, when Alfie
Harrison drew a save from Dani Van Den Heuvel and Kyle Crossley put
the rebound into orbit.
Defeat left the Magpies second bottom of PL2 and means that with two
games left, they cannot mathematically qualify for the end of season
playoff.
