It's
now six PL2 games without a win for Newcastle's U21 side, who had
the misfortune to come up against an expensively-assembled Chelsea
side at a chilly Whitley Park on Friday evening.
Making a rare visit to Tyneside at this level, the Blues were in
search of their
fourth successive away victory as they looked to break into the top
four places.
The visitors went ahead from their first serious attack; Dylan
Williams exchanging passes on the left of the box with Ronnie
Stutter and netting after seven minutes.
There was a swift response from the hosts when an awful clearance by
visiting 'keeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe fell to Trevan Sanusi who strode
forward before tucking his shot into the far corner in the
ninth minute - the 16 year-old registering his second PL2 goal of
the week.
Chelsea regained their lead on 16 minutes after another lightning
break upfield; Zain Silcott-Duberry whipping in a low centre from
the right flank that Stutter stuck home from close range.
The Londoners then extended their advantage just 24 seconds into the
second half when poor marking allowed Leo Castledine to blast home
from inside the box.
Castledine then added a fourth five minutes later when he fired a
ball across the six yard box from the left into the roof of the net
from point-blank range.
It was 1-5 in the 83rd minute when substitute and ex-NUFC trialist,
Dujuan Richards, beat Will Brown with a stylish low curling finish.
The half dozen came from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of
added time when Stutter got his second after Jimi Tauriainen was
fouled and the seventh followed two minutes later through Diego
Moreira's simple finish.
That final strike deep into injury time put United into unwanted and
uncharted territory; conceding seven times for the first time in the
PL Reserve era.
The final score matched a 1-7 loss at Aston Villa back in October
1986, while the last home reserve defeat of a similar magnitude came
against Wolves in August 1977. Both were in the Central League.
The Magpies are one adrift at the bottom of the 26 team PL2
competition table, although they have games in hand on the six sides
immediately ahead of them. There's no promotion or relegation.
