Jacob Murphy's
right wing corner at the Hammersmith End went short to Sean Longstaff,
before Kieran Trippier's deep cross was headed back across the box by Burn.
Lewis Miley's touch rebounded off a home player and then the arm of Bruno
Guimaraes, before Longstaff lashed the loose ball home from around 12 yards out.
A VAR check then confirmed the validity of the strike.

Eddie Howe
said:
"It's a big step forward for us just to win the game. We got the
major bits right - resilience, really good character and attitude. I hope it
gives the season more legs; we're desperate to do well and progress. We can go
on a really good run.
"A difficult game, not our finest performance. I think you win these types
of games in the mind. The motivation had to be there, the resilience had to be
there, and both were. The second half was better in terms of technical delivery.
"We are pleased to win, keep a clean sheet and score two good goals. We
knew it was going to be difficult tonight. You come to this ground, it is a
Premier League game. We have got our injury troubles and we are not at our
fluent best.
"In these sorts of games, that is when you have to try and dig out a
result. You try and get yourself into the next round. That is where I have to
praise the players. We weren't at our best in the first half but we came in at
the break 1-0 up, which was a good scoreline for us.
"Sean's finish is a great shot with his left foot. For Dan's, well I
don't think he could've missed that. He has scored some important goals for us,
none more so than last year in our cup run to the Carabao Cup final. That second
goal was all important for us.
"It would be incredible to do it in the FA Cup (get to Wembley).
The Carabao Cup whetted the appetite for us, it was an incredible day. The
scenes beforehand and the support we had - we were so disappointed not to
deliver the result Hopefully we can go a long way in this competition this
year."
On the absent Miggy Almiron:
"He was ill, genuinely ill. Future? I want him to stay. Miguel to leave
next week? It's difficult; I'm not in hourly contact with what's going on,
there's a possibility that someone could leave.
" If we can go with
the same squad that we've had, I'll take that. We want to keep everybody. That's
my wish. This team has a lot more to give."
Marco
Silva ranted:
"It’s clearly our fault that we are
not in the next round of the FA Cup, because mistakes against teams with this
quality and this size can punish you. That first corner when we conceded the
goal, no communication or decision, and they scored.
"You can talk about handball but it's
something that I cannot control. I can talk even about the second – it’s not
even a corner, it’s a goal-kick. It is what it is. These situations you cannot
control and I don't want to go in that direction.
"Clearly we have to do much
better in both situations to win a football match because the players
probably deserved a result, but when you are punished by these mistakes,
it’s our fault and you have to be strong in both situations.
“We controlled, for 60-70 minutes,
almost all the game, the way we pressed really high and strongly.
"We didn’t give Newcastle the chance for them to settle their game,
to start from the back like they normally do, because we pressed them
really well.
"The players understood really well that situation, credit for our
players, but then we have to do the other part, that is to be clinical in
our attack line, taking the right decisions when you are so many times in
dangerous areas, and we didn’t.”
Newcastle have now
won each of their last four visits to Craven Cottage (4-1, 2-0,
4-0, 2-0). Three of those games came in the Premier League.

United recorded successive clean sheets in the FA Cup for the first time
since the 2009/10 season - a 0-0 draw at Plymouth Argyle in the Third
Round and a 3-0 success in the replay at SJP.
Sean Longstaff netted his third goal in the FA Cup - like the
previous two coming in an away win:
2018/19 Blackburn Rovers (a) won 4-2
2019/20 Oxford United (a) won 3-2
2023/24 Fulham (a) won 2-0
There was a sixth goal in Newcastle colours for Dan Burn, who
already had three in the Premier League and one each in the Carabao Cup
and Champions League before tonight.
Longstaff and Burn have identical scoring records this season: a total of
four comprising two PL goals and one each in the FA Cup and Champions
League.
Burn is the ninth Magpie to have scored in the Premier League,
League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League, after messrs Shearer,
Dyer, Speed, Solano, Almiron, Longstaff, Isak and Joelinton.

Goals from local lads Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn proved enough to propel the
Magpies into the Fifth Round of the FA Cup on Saturday night, as Craven Cottage
again proved to be our happy place.
Following a hat-trick of Premier League victories here under three different
managers, a first FA Cup success on the banks of the Thames since 1956 meant that
United have won back to back ties in this competition without requiring a replay
for the first time since 2006.
Alan Shearer led the line then and he was present tonight - in the away end for
once rather than a TV studio. He claimed that he'd not been in with the away
fans since 1985, although not saying where that was as a 14 or 15 year-old. We
did wonder about Roker Park, and whether he'd made a youthful incursion into the
Fulwell End - perhaps some things are better left unrecorded....
Missing from the current matchday squad were Miguel Almiron (ill) and Jamaal
Lascelles (injured), whose absence did nothing to dampen recent speculation
about their futures. The belated and successful return of Jacob Murphy did at
least boost our shrinking midfield options, feeling his way and trying to keep
out of trouble but seemingly resisting one hefty shove on his shoulder.
Neither side seized the initiative in a formless first half; Newcastle fielding
all but one of the side that started their previous game two weeks earlier while
Fulham made seven changes from the line-up that drew 1-1 with Liverpool here 72
hours before in the League Cup.
Murphy was unable to beat Marek Rodak after the ball broke to him in the box
after just five minutes. Martin Dubravka made a more impressive fingertip save
to deny Rodrigo Muniz as the hosts pressed with some success, but did little of
note when gaining possession and had nothing up front.
Almost to the minute that the opener came on wearside in the previous round,
United went ahead here - another confidence-boosting goal scored at the right
time, upsetting the opposition's plan of keeping us at bay before introducing
reinforcements as we tired.
The visitors then thought that they'd doubled their lead just before half time
when Murphy dashed in from the right and supplied an excellent finish, only to
be rightfully denied for being offside.
Forced into a change when Harry Wilson was unable to continue, Fulham seldom
looked like wiping out the deficit and fell further behind just after the hour
as a result of another Newcastle corner.
Burn collected a second goal against his former club in as many games this
season from roughly the same range that registered the first against Bernd Leno
on Tyneside last month, giving his current side some breathing space and ramping
up the party behind the Putney End goal.
Further goals seemed likely as Fulham belatedly tried to get a foothold in the
tie, but they wasted a few half-chances to make a game of it and at the other
end a series of Newcastle breaks floundered due to lack of care with the final
ball. At the heart of those attacks was Tino Livramento, who can count himself
unlucky not have made the starting line-up, but the statistics will reflect that
Burn scored once and was involved in the other goal.
Given our wretched record in this competition in the last two decades or so, any
FA Cup victory is cause for celebration and the level of opposition made it a
no-brainer to pick a full strength side here, even if Fulham understandably
rotated their players.
Having accepted the justification of playing three times a week for some
fatigued displays though, a fortnight's rest seemed to have blunted our
competitive edge at times; hopeful passes out of defence and some unwise
decision making on the ball.
Hopefully this tie has been a valuable exercise in preparing the side for the
rigours of the Premier League during the rest of the season - Aston Villa
certainly won't be as accommodating on Tuesday night as Fulham were at times
here.
Exactly which players Eddie Howe has at his disposal - never mind who is fit -
may not become clear until the day after the Villa game, when the transfer
window closes. One senses there are still deals to be done if the price is right
and with Bruno's looming two match ban, cover in the central midfield area
remains an obvious concern.
