Stats

There was a belated competitive debut for 20 year-old goalkeeper Reece Byrne, who joined United from Bohemian in June but has been unavailable due to injury. Also making his bow in PL2 was 18 year-old midfielder Travis Hernes, although he has previously featured in the Premier League Cup.

They became the 27th and 28th players to feature in PL2 for Newcastle so far this season, Byrne the third goalkeeper after Will Brown and Jude Smith. Only Amadou Diallo has started all nine games, while Ben Parkinson has been on the field at some stage in every game.

The revamped format of PL2 means that this is the only time that the Foxes and Magpies are scheduled to face each other this season.

PS: This was the second attempt at completing this fixture, after the first game in early November 2023 was abandoned with 29 minutes of the first half played at Seagrave and the scoreline 2-2.

The Foxes went ahead that night through Will Alves on five minutes, doubling that lead through Chris Popov midway through the first half. A rapid brace from Dylan Stephenson then restored parity, before the game was abandoned following a medical emergency involving a home staff member.

The Foxes later announced that "following examination by on-site medics, the staff member has been released from observation to recover at home."

Team: Brown, Wiggett, Scott, Savage, Heffernan, Carlyon, Crossley, De Bolle, Stephenson, Huntley, Emerson. Subs n/u: C.Thompson, Harris, McArthur, Stanton, M.Ndiweni.

Newcastle U21s returned to action after the festive break on Monday night, facing Leicester City at their Seagrave training ground.

The Magpies drew first blood, going ahead through Dylan Stephenson in only the second minute.

City replied through Harvey Godsmark-Ford after 18 minutes only for Newcastle to regain the lead on 74 minutes when Ben Parkinson converted a James Huntley cross.

However the Foxes levelled again on four minutes into second half added time, Oliver Ewing's late strike from close range ensuring that the points were shared.
