Half time:
Newcastle 0 Manchester United 0
55 mins Kieran Trippier anticipated Onana's kick out towards Alejandro
Garnacho and intercepted it ahead of the visiting player just in the Manchester
United half. His first time ball forwards reached Alexander Isak and he touched
it infield to Bruno, who picked up Trippier's untracked run down the right and
played it out to him despite the pleadings of Miggy Almiron who was nearer.
The boyhood Manchester City fan sent over a perfect first-time centre that
Almiron unsuccessfully stretched for in the centre of the Leazes goal but was into the
path of Anthony Gordon, who snuck in behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka and passed
the ball into the net right footed from four yards out. 1-0

Eddie Howe
said:
"It was a brilliant performance from the
players and up there with the best we've played for a long time. We were really
dominant; we were really good with the ball, attacked really well and the only
disappointment was that we didn't score earlier and didn't score again.
"The players have responded again. What a response to that late goal
in Paris. It would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves.
"I couldn't be happier with the players tonight - the performances we put
in against three top teams were brilliant, so that will give us confidence.
Then, when we get some players back, we can push on even further.
"The players we have fit have really stood up and grown with the three
games (in eight days). We've grown as a team - some of the relationships are
starting to form and I thought the left side was really strong today.
On Gordon:
"From day one, when he arrived at the club, you could see the passion he
had and his desire to achieve and be successful. He puts the work in every day
and sometimes we have to go and get him off the training pitch.
"He was very good again up against a very good defender today in Wan-Bissaka.
Physically he was so good today, it was a really good battle between the two of
them. I am delighted he is scoring the goals now and getting the recognition he
deserves."
On Livramento:
"He showed his technical quality, his athleticism, his ability to attack
and although it's maybe not his favoured side you maybe wouldn't have known that
from today. He and Anthony (Gordon) linked well and gave good balance to the
team."
On Pope:
"It looks like he’s dislocated his shoulder. Such a strange thing
really because he’d have made that dive thousands of times. It just looks like
the arm’s kept going on the moist floor and his shoulder has come out of
joint. We’re going to have to seek a specialist opinion and see what happens
but it doesn't look good for him.
"It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of
time. It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way and they are
normally the more serious ones.
"Martin Dubravka came
on in a tricky situation with 10 minutes to go with a narrow lead,
which is not nice for any goalkeeper, so I have to compliment him
for doing so well.
"Positive signs from Martin are that he was outstanding on his
last start in the cup (a month ago at Old Trafford in the
Carabai Cup) and has performed really well for his country as
they qualified for the Euros. I think he's in a really good
place."
On the latest effort from Wor Flags:
"I didn't even know they were my words you know?! That's
nice!
"I did see the flag before the game and that was much
appreciated. This is the way we want to play the game. We want to
make the game: today we did."
The
Only Fools and Horses Christmas special doesn't look great
Erik
ten Hag:
"When you have so many games in a short period you can have less
good performances.
"We had a tough first half. We said at half-time, we are pleased
to be at 0-0 and have to stay in the game. We
had a good comeback in the last part of the game, that's the fight we have
to show.
“We have to give credit to Newcastle. They played better than us
tonight. We started well, we had a good chance by (Alejandro)
Garnacho but then, for a long period, Newcastle had the better performance
than us.
"We went down 1-0 but, to be fair, by the end of the game, we came
back and had some good opportunities. (Sergio) Reguilon had a good
chance, then the offside goal, so we fought back but we have to do this
for the whole game. But,
overall, Newcastle deserved to win.
"I think they put out a good team. It’s probably one of the
strongest teams they have, but, in the end, they didn’t have the subs we
have. We brought some energy in and that had a good effect on the game.
"We stick together, we keep to the plan. This team is resilient.
We've seen it after (Manchester) City, we had a bad defeat but then
we kept together, stuck to the plan and kept going."
Newcastle won back to back games against Manchester United for the very
first time in the Premier League - one has to go back to 1972 to find the
last time they did so in the Football League, when a 2-0 success at Old Trafford
was followed by a 2-1 victory on Tyneside the following season.
We were last able to celebrate three consecutive victories in all
competitions against these lot in 1922; a 6-3 conquest at SJP on the
first day of 1921, a 3-0 win there on the last day of that year and a single
goal away success a fortnight after that - all three games in Division
One.
A third successive win and clean sheet against the Red Devils meanwhile
is something Newcastle haven't achieved since 1897 (2-0 home in
January, 2-0 home in October, 1-0 away in November). The opposition were still
known as Newton Heath at that time.

Anthony Gordon
netted his sixth Premier League goal of the season, moving to within one of
joint top scorers Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson. His tally of seven PL
goals takes him one ahead of Sean Longstaff and level with Matt Ritchie.
Gordon has now scored in each of his last four PL home games - the
first Magpie to do so in that competition since Joe Willock in April/May
2021. That sequence encompassed five games as the scorer was absent for one: Yoan
Gouffran was the most recent Newcastle player to net four times across four
successive PL fixtures at SJP, back in November/December 2013 - he did it in
five. The 2016/17 season meanwhile saw Matt Ritchie manage four in four at SJP
in the Championship.
21 points from their opening eight home PL fixture is Newcastle's most
productive start since the 2002/03 campaign. Their best start is 1995/96's full
house of 24 points from eight games at SJP.
Seven PL home wins so far already exceeds the total that the Magpies managed
in four entire seasons; five in 2008/09; six in 2010/11, 2019/20 and 2020/21.
The Magpies have now scored in each of their first seven PL home
games, the first time they've managed that since the 2008/09 season.
Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles remain one PL booking away from an
automatic one game ban.
A second successive win this season for Martin Dubravka in our colours,
both coming against the team he spent part of last season on loan at.
Spider Cam update - at last an aye in the sky!:
2019/20 Manchester United (a) lost 1-4
2020/21 Liverpool (h) drew 0-0
2022/23 Liverpool (h) lost 0-2
2022/23 Manchester United (n) lost 0-2
2022/23 Arsenal (h) lost 0-2
2023/24 Borussia Dortmund (a) lost 0-2
2023/24 Manchester United (h) won 1-0

A 55th minute effort from Anthony Gordon deservedly gave Newcastle their sixth successive Premier League home victory on Saturday night, ending an epic week on a high note.
An undiminished sick list saw the same line-up that disposed of Chelsea before
being controversially held in Paris stylishly set about the Red Devils from the
off, but they had only Gordon's finish from Kieran Trippier's cross to show for
their dominance.
One fan labelled it a "1-0 annihilation" afterwards, while others
mused over how awful the enforced coach trip over the M62 for the visiting side
after their flight was cancelled must have been. Judging by the pedestrian
showing of Marcus Rashford he must have walked here....
Trippier had come closest to opening the scoring late in the first half with a
free kick from a similar distance to Raheem Sterling's effort for Chelsea in the
last home game, but rattled the Gallowgate goal frame with comedic custodian
Onana rooted to the spot.
Winning the toss, Erik ten Hag's side chose to attack the Leazes End in the
first half but then barely bothered to do so - former Magpies boss Steve
McClaren on the away bench perhaps gambling that Newcastle would tire later
playing up the slope with a lack of game changers on the bench.
It's fair to say that plan backfired entirely; at times the approach play from
the hosts was a joy to watch against the gutless and uncommitted visitors. It's
vital to stress the levels Newcastle found when playing here and credit them for
it, rather than just highlighting the opposition's inadequacy.
The faintest sliver of doubt had begun to creep in by time we did go ahead
though. Up until that point just three of our 16 shots were on target and for
all our delightful work, Onana had been in greater peril from his team mates
than the efforts of home players.
The meeting of these two sides were in March 1996 inevitably came to mind;
Newcastle turned round by the coin toss as per today and unable to turn
possession and threat into goals in the opening 45.
There was even a
blockbuster free kick in the style of Philippe Albert's that night -
although our thoughts were solidly on Yohan Cabaye's successful effort against
these lot here at the same end when Trippier was lining up.
Where Schmeichel was an imperious one man barrier to our ambitions that day
though, his 2023 counterpart was nothing of the sort and mostly in the bystander
category before conceding.
A straw poll revealed a clutch of worthy man of the match candidates; Bruno
benefiting from a more advanced role and both full backs excelling - Trippier
revitalised and Livramento superb despite making only
his second PL start for us and playing on the "wrong" side.
And in addition to some glimpses of the unplayable Joelinton and logic-defyingly
athletic shifts from the two centre halves, an excellent display from Lewis
Miley that belied the fact that he'll only turn 18 in the final weeks of this
season. Christ knows where they all got the energy from.
It wasn't all plain sailing however; Newcastle's injury woes continued when goalkeeper Nick Pope was led from
the field late on with a shoulder problem after landing awkwardly to block a
shot that never actually reached him thanks to Fabian Schar's intervention.
That changed the mood inside the stadium and gave the visitors renewed hope of
what would have been an unlikely smash and grab raid, thoughts inevitably
turning to the farcical finale in Paris.
Pope's replacement Martin Dubravka was unable to prevent Antony from
netting in the final seconds of normal time, but the away side's celebrations
were instantly cut short by a raised flag - the substitute's goal bound effort hitting an
offside Harry Maguire.
That was the only real moment of peril in almost 10 minutes of time added
on, before the final whistle confirmed a third successive win and clean sheet of
2023 over the Red Devils. After decades of being habitually turned over by this
lot in our supporting lives, it's a red letter year never mind a day....
The Wor Flags banner unfurled referenced Eddie Howe's dressing room comment
ahead of April's home win over this lot as relayed on the Amazon documentary -
minus his profanity.
If the dividend from our cup final defeat at their hands in February was to
motivate the manager and players to the levels shown again here when facing
these lot, it was a price worth paying.
Ending the day in fifth, Newcastle then dropped down to sixth on Sunday as a
result of the point collected by Spurs from their 3-3 draw at Manchester City.
