Newcastle U21s played their
second cup fixture of the week on Friday evening, when Huddersfield Town were the visitors in a Premier League Cup tie at Whitley Park.
A
small crowd on a bitterly cold night endured a scrappy encounter
that went the way of the Terriers thanks to an 85th minute goal, Conor Falls
pouncing from close range after a scramble in the box.
Following
a drab first half, an injury-hit Town side came closest to breaking
the deadlock when Tom Iorpenda shot against the foot of a post on 70
minutes.
Huddersfield 'keeper Francis Hurl was a spectator for the majority
of the night, belatedly blocking James Huntley's 83rd minute effort
and pushing an Ellis Stanton free kick over the bar soon
after.
The Magpies sit bottom of their four team group after failing to win
any of their four ties to date and will conclude their cup
commitments with what look like
meaningless trips to Fleetwood Town and Nottingham Forest in 2024.
