Wednesday
saw Newcastle U21s progress in this season's Northumberland
Senior Cup, winning a one-sided First Round tie at Whitley Park against
Northern League Second Division leaders Blue Star.
The hosts went ahead when Ellis Stanton hit a low effort from the edge
of the box after seven minutes - a second in as many games for the 18
year-old following a similarly well-taken effort at Port Vale last week.
Further goals seemed likely; James Huntley firing just wide in the 19th
minute and Josh Scott's shot crashing off the bar ten minutes before the
break.
United's pressure paid dividends on 56 minutes when Huntley guided his
shot home and four minutes later a simple header by Kyle Crossley made
it 3-0.
Scott curled in United's fourth in the 62nd minute and a lovely finish
by Stanton for his second of the tie made it 5-0 with 13 minutes
remaining.
The visitors had their best moment ten minutes from the end when a rare
raid saw Dan Lanning shot's tipped onto the near post by Aidan Harris.
In truth Blue Star were disappointing, but despite drawing their last
five games, United had failed to win in league or cup since the opening
day of the season.
This morale-boosting success for Ben Dawson's side also featured their
first clean sheet since April.
The Magpies will face Northern League Second Division opposition once
again in the last eight, when they entertain Bedlington Terriers on a
date to be decided.
Both teams were in the proverbial hat for the Quarter Final, drawn on
the pitch at half time:
West Allotment Celtic v Ashington
Newcastle United v Bedlington Terriers
Morpeth Town v Blyth Town
Blyth Spartans v Newcastle Benfield
Ties to be played on or before December 6th.
