Newcastle
U21s saw their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the EFL
Trophy end on Tuesday, but ended their wait for a goal and a point in
this competition - and took their League One
hosts to a penalty shootout before succumbing.
Ben Dawson's side trailed at the break, falling behind in the
17th minute when Ethan Chislett's corner from the Vale right wasn't
cleared and Jesse Debrah stabbed home the loose ball from close range.
The green-clad Magpies left it until the 90th minute before levelling,
substitute Ellis Stanton powering in a shot from the edge of the Vale
box following a corner kick.
With no more scoring in five additional minutes, each side collect one
point with an additional one available for the penalty shootout winners.
That was to be the home side, although Magpies custodian Aidan Harris
did save two efforts.
Newcastle complete their group stage fixtures next month with a
visit to a Crewe Alexandra side who also now have no chance of
progression, following their 0-3 home loss to Wrexham on Tuesday.
The Valiants began their Northern Group B fixtures with a 1-0 home
victory over Crewe Alexandra, while Newcastle suffered a single goal
loss at Wrexham.
Stanton's goal was Newcastle's first in the EFL Trophy in 450 minutes
since Michael Ndiweni against Mansfield Town in November 2021.
Thanks to GW for his usual excellent work.
