Eddie Howe
said:
"It was a tough game - Burnley
are a really interesting team. Vincent (Kompany) has done a great
job. They play a very dangerous style and if you aren’t perfect
with your press they can hurt you. But we deserved to win.
"Maybe a shaky start in the first ten minutes
when they gave us problems, but we recovered really well, and from
maybe the tenth minute onwards, we looked comfortable - but I would
have liked us to be a bit more clinical."
"We didn't want to change too much - though we still moved (Fabian)
Schar. Height is a big thing for us from set plays at both ends of
the pitch and Jamaal's (Lascelles) leadership is key as well.
I felt he deserved it after his great performance on
Wednesday."
On Sven Botman:
"A knee problem that's serious enough to keep him out I think
until the international break. We hope that after that he'll be
close to being fit."
On Callum Wilson:
"Callum has a very minor hamstring problem....whether we see him about before the
international break, I don't know. I hope we do, but there's no
guarantee."
On Joelinton:
"It looks like a hamstring problem. It doesn't look serious but
was enough for Joe, who never complains of anything, to go down and
come off."
On Miggy Almiron:
"He's a unique footballer. I
don't think there is anyone better at doing what he does. All
energy, all action, I'd like to see his physical stats from today
because I'm sure they'll be through the roof.
"The quality shown on his finish was
very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year and it's a great
return to form for Miggy. He's such an important player for us."
Vincent Kompany - finally on the
losing side to Newcastle after 14 unbeaten appearances playing for
Manchester City - said:
"At the moment
it’s not happening but it’s important to retain the belief.
"Newcastle are a top side but we stayed in the game for long periods and we
had our moments. That’s important. No one said it would be easy. It’s
supposed to be tough; it's not supposed to be easy, going to
St James' Park.
"But we started well, stayed in the game and then probably made a mistake that
put the game a bit away from us. I can't fault the team for the performance.
"I think there are plenty of managers who have come here, especially with
promoted teams, who have said to win games here, to get a result, you need to
have a little bit of luck on your side and to take your key moments, and I feel
we were exactly the opposite there.
"We knew that
(pressing) was their strength, so it’s a moment to create chances. In the
first-half, the first 10 to 15 minutes, it’s in those moments we created
chances and even in the second-half.
"But the game happened with the bits in
between, the mistake, the penalty and Newcastle are a top side, they showed it’s
a really tough place to come to. From our perspective, we were in the game and
that’s important."
Four Premier League home games for
Newcastle so far this season have brought three victories: nine
points is the club's best top-flight return since 2007/08 when they
had amassed 10.
A 22nd PL goal for Miggy Almiron puts him level with
Laurent Robert, one behind Kieron Dyer and four off Michael Owen.
It's 14 now in the PL for Alexander Isak, who pulls
one ahead of current colleague Joe Willock and is now just one shy
of Joelinton's current total. The Swedish international netted for
the third successive league and cup game - the first time that he's
done so since joining the club.
Nick Pope kept his fifth successive clean sheet in all
competitions, extending his shutout record to 470 minutes - his
best run since up ten consecutive shutouts last season totaling 931
minutes. In PL games only, Pope's current run is 290 minutes and his
highest total is 574 minutes.
Before Wednesday against Manchester City and today, the last time that
Jamaal Lascelles made successive 90 minute appearances was December
2021 (Manchester City H, Manchester United H).
Fabian Schar made his 150th competitive league and cup
appearance for the club.
Newcastle's 12 point return from their
opening seven PL games is their best start since 2011:
2023/24 12 points, 8th (GD +11)
2022/23 8 points, 10th (GD+1)
2021/22 3 points, 19th (GD-8)
2020/21 11 points, 11th (GD-1)
2019/20 5 points, 19th (GD-9)
2018/19 2 points, 18th (GD-6)
2017/18 10 points, 9th (GD+1)
2015/16 3 points, 19th (GD-6)
2014/15 4 points, 18th (GD-7)
2013/14 10 points, 11th (GD-3)
2012/13 9 points, 10th (GD-3)
2011/12 15 points, 3rd (GD +5)
Newcastle have now scored direct from their last 12 penalties
in the Premier League:
Sep 2023 Burnley (h) Isak
Sep 2023 Brentford (h) Wilson
May 2023 Leeds United (a) Wilson
May 2023 Leeds United (a) Wilson
Mar 2023 Nottingham Forest (h) Isak
Dec 2022 Leicester City (a) Wood
Oct 2022 Aston Villa (h) Wilson
Sep 2022 Bournemouth (h) Isak
May 2022 Burnley (a) Wilson
Apr 2022 Wolves (h) Wood
Nov 2021 Norwich City (h) Wilson
May 2021 Fulham (a) Schar
The last official spot kick miss by a Newcastle player in the PL was Joe
Willock v Manchester City (h) in May 2021, although he netted the rebound.
Matt Ritchie v Southampton (a) in March 2020 remains the last PL penalty
that didn't lead to a goal for the Magpies.

This deserved home win made it ten goals, six points and two clean sheets in
the Premier League since Sunday, also advancing to the
last 16 of the Carabao Cup. We've had worse weeks....
Given the form of the two sides
and Newcastle's recent dominance in the fixture, a third successive league win
looked odds-on before kick-off. And despite lacking both Sven
Botman and Callum Wilson, United were set on their way after 14
minutes thanks to Miguel Almiron's fine strike.
The architect of the opening goal was ex-Claret Kieran Trippier, who bullied
Aaron Ramsey into losing possession just outside his own area, allowing Miggy to stride infield before
stylishly letting fly.
A Burnley side winless on Tyneside since 1976 and with just a single
point after six games back in the top flight reached half time just one behind, but scarcely crossed the halfway line
in achieving that.
Alexander Isak came close to doubling the lead when played in
by Bruno on 27 minutes, but couldn't wrap his foot round the loose
ball after visiting goalkeeper James Trafford blocked the initial
effort.
And only Elliot Anderson will know how he didn't get off the mark for
United eight minutes later, most of the ground already celebrating
his diving header from Sean Longstaff's centre before it hit
Trafford on the knee, deflected off his hand and was smuggled clear
of the goal line by Connor Roberts.
Having lost the services of Anthony Gordon at West Ham next week
following a fifth PL booking of the season, Newcastle's injury list
then lengthened when Joelinton limped off within five minutes of
his 64th minute arrival from the bench to replace Anderson.
With neither Joe Willock nor Harvey Barnes back in harness any time
soon, our midfield options are further reduced although Gordon can
at least line up against PSG before his enforced break. The
influence of Sean Longstaff continues to grow, his unrelenting
output a component in the recent upturn in Bruno's contributions -
the latter also seemingly in better fettle after his new deal was
negotiated, social media photos today showing that his agent was in
attendance.
Any
hopes that Vincent Kompany's side harboured of sneaking a point
disappeared with the 76th minute when Ameen Al Dakhil downed Gordon
in the area - Isak efficiently dispatching the resultant penalty
kick into the Gallowgate net in the absence of Wilson.
That came at a vital time with Burnley showing signs of threatening to punish
United's profligacy; Josh Cullen's goalbound attempt from the edge of the area
blocked. Nick Pope then tipped over an Ameen Al Dakhill header at
0-2 but the game gradually petered out in seven added minutes.
The win saw Eddie Howe's side stay eighth in the table as Aston
Villa and West Ham also won but the gap to the top five narrowed to just three points.
As we wrote following the defeat at Brighton
that began this memorable month,
"our bread and
butter remains the 38 game domestic campaign....it's games against
Brentford, Sheffield United and Burnley that will really shape our
season."
Nine points out of nine,11 goals scored and none conceded is a
pretty emphatic response to those who voiced their discontent on the
way back from Sussex.
