One of our own
21 mins
Dan Burn's throw-in on the left to
Anthony Gordon saw the substitute make the byline and as he cut back, the
ball bounced up and hit his hand before dropping on the line. He continued
and pulled back to Sean Longstaff who thumped the ball in
left-footed from outside the six yard box.
Celebrations were slightly muted as Longstaff and Gordon looked at the
officials but VAR deemed the ball had just stayed in and the accidental
handball wasn't by the scorer, meaning that under current guidance the
goal stood. It's fair to say that the letter of the law is totally at odds
with our own instincts and those of the outraged home fans on the Kop
behind that goal. 1-0
Two of our own
31 mins
Kieran Trippier's corner kick
delivery from the left flank was inch perfect for the far post run of Dan
Burn who lost his marker, despite almost having his shirt removed and
his bullet header bulged the back of the net. 2-0
35 mins
Trippier's delivery from a free kick
on the Newcastle right was again perfect for Sven Botman, who
glanced a header into the far corner for his first Magpies goal. His goal
celebrations were a little unwise pointing to his name in front of the
home fans and Elliot Anderson was hit on the leg by a bottle as his
captain hastily ushered the players away. 3-0
Pass (to) the Dutchie from the left hand
side

56 mins
Fabian Schar strode forward and just
as he was being urged to "shoot" he played the ball out to
Trippier. His first time dink across to Callum Wilson was sublime,
leaving the number nine the simple chance to head home from inside the six
yard box in front of the Bramall Lane Stand.
4-0
61 mins
This time it was Anderson with plenty of space to run into and he
played a simple pass to Anthony Gordon. He cut inside and then hit
a perfect curler into the far corner that Wes Foderingham had no chance of
reaching. 5-0
68 mins
Botman found Miggy
Almiron in the centre of the pitch and he scampered forward, giving
the ball to Bruno Guimaraes and continuing his run into the box. Bruno's
return pass was perfect for Miggy to jump over and then shoot left-footed
inside the far post for a little bit of club history. 6-0
73 mins
Benie Traore inexplicably passed
straight to Alexander Isak who made his way into the area before being
crowded out. The ball fell to Longstaff and his first-time shot ricocheted
to Bruno Guimaraes, who took a touch and then calmly picked his
spot before adding a ball up the jumper celebration to his considerable
repertoire. 7-0
87 mins
Alexander Isak attempted
to lay the ball off to a colleague but Tom Davies provided the perfect
header back to the Swede who took the ball into the area, checked on to
his right foot to dump the Blades' substitute on his backside and fired
past Fotheringham. Delicious. 8-0

A gallon of Magpies
Eddie Howe
said:
"It was very good. I don't know whether it was the
complete performance. We are always looking to look and find things
to improve. It's a really tough place to come, especially off the
back of a European week for us so delighted with the players."
Asked about preparation following the Milan trip:
"That was the key to the game. If we didn't turn up in the best
condition Sheffield United would have beaten us.
"First of all we had to attack the game in the way that
we normally would. We had to be ready for what they would throw at
us, try and quieten the crowd and we started really well and got the
goal early. That settled us down and we played some really good
football after that.
"It shows you that the players were very motivated for
the game. They were hungry for goals and for success.
"I do think we've got a really motivated group. I see
really good character traits throughout the whole squad. It's a long
season for us. We've got a lot of challenges to come but certainly
the last week has been a return to form for us.
"We’ve had a tough start to the season in terms of fixtures
but we were ruthless and kept looking to score.
"We respect Sheffield United and Paul Heckingbottom and the job
that he’s done here but we just had to do our thing which was to
keep pushing and keep looking for goals.”
"I thought we were really good from the start and when the
goals came I felt the confidence in the team returned.
"The big thing for us was that we really wanted to score
and we weren't content with three and I want that mentality to run
through the team.
"We shared (the goals) around a bit today. There
were important ones there for Alexander Isak to score and Sean
Longstaff, for me he is a goalscoring midfielder. So some really
important ones for the individuals.
"(The clean sheet) is a welcome return to form in
that regard because we were so good defensively last season and we
weren't as watertight at the start of this one. It is a welcome
boost for us because we know we have top quality defenders."
On Anthony Gordon:
"He's a top player. So our idea was just to rest him
after two really big physical efforts.
"He comes on straight away and yeah I think that's his
best game in a Newcastle shirt. I thought he was outstanding and
he's really found a good rhythm this season and hopefully that
continues."
On Harvey Barnes:
"He wasn’t too good. I think he’s got a toe
problem so I think he went over and felt something in his toe. Early signs are there is an injury there but we don’t know
what it is at this moment.
"Of course it’s a concern, injuries in one position will hurt
us We’ve been missing two midfielders (Joe Willock and
Joelinton) and that’s been a concern for us so losing Harvey is
not something we will take lightly."
Paul
Heckingbottom said:
"We were
undone by our organisation.
"We can't afford to put ourselves behind
in that sort of fashion if we want to compete. A lot of the things I saw in the second half I've never seen here.
There are certain things that aren't acceptable, which they know.
"You could see moments where Newcastle outfought us and outran us.
That is not acceptable. We want to compete. There is still a level of competition we
expect. We know they have top-class players but there is an
expectation from us that we are here to compete.
"These results are going to come, we expect them, but it is the
nature of the performance that we are upset about. No-one wants to see that.
"These
games are not going to define our season. It's about accumulating points.
While there are huge things we have to learn from, we also have to keep a
calm head about this sort of game.
"The supporters were first class, you
could hear them all the way through. It has been a tough week for
everyone, we wanted to do our bit to change that but we've failed.
"You can't feel sorry for yourself. We are ready to go tomorrow
morning. There are things we have to address from that, we can't shy
away from it, but the good thing is you always have another game."
Newcastle registered their biggest ever away league win and
their second-largest of all time in all competitions away from
St. James' Park.
Their only larger margin of victory on the road was a 9-0
FA Cup Fourth Round Second Replay win over Southport in February
1932. That took place in Sheffield, at the neutral venue of Hillsborough.
United's biggest away winning margins
(half time score in brackets):
1931/32 Southport won 9-0 (4-0) (FAC)
2023/24 Sheffield United won 8-0 (3-0) (PL)
2020/21 Morecambe won 7-0 (5-0) LC)
1927/28 Manchester United won 7-1 (2-0) (D1)
1993/94 Notts County won 7-1 (3-0) LC)
1907/08 Fulham won 6-0 (2-0) FAC)
1912/13 Everton won 6-0 (2-0) (D1)
1962/63 Walsall won 6-0 (3-0) (D2)
2016/17 QPR won 6-0 (2-0) (Championship)
United's biggest NUFC PL tallies - home and away:
(half time score in brackets):
2023/24 Sheffield United (a) 8-0 (3-0)
1999/00 Sheffield Wednesday (h) 8-0 (4-0)
1993/94 Swindon Town (h) 7-1 (2-0)
1996/97 Tottenham Hotspur (h) 7-1 (2-0)
2010/11 Aston Villa (h) 6-0 (3-0)
2022/23 Tottenham Hotspur (h) 6-1 (5-0)
1995/96 Wimbledon (h) 6-1 (3-0)
2001/02 Everton (h) 6-2 (2-2)
2015/16 Norwich City (h) 6-2 (3-2)
Today was only the eleventh time in the club's history that Newcastle have
scored more than seven goals in a competitive senior fixture:
13-0 1946/47 Newport County (h)
9-0 1931/32 Southport (n)
9-2 1933/34 Liverpool (h)
8-0 1895/96 West Hartlepool NER (h)
8-0 1901/02 Notts County (h)
8-0 1905/06 Wolves (h)
8-0 1907/08 Birmingham (h)
8-0 1999/00 Sheffield
Wednesday (h)
8-0 2023/24 Sheffield United (a)
8-1 1926/27 Notts County (h)
8-2 1959/60 Everton (h)
The Magpies scored
more than five goals away from home in the Premier League for
the first time, eclipsing their previous best tally of 5-1, at
Coventry City in 1998 and West Ham in 2023.
United scored five goals in the second half of any game since the
visit of Barnsley to SJP in the Championship during March 2010 (1-0 to
6-1). Away from home, they last netted that many after the interval in
Division Two at Bury in October 1961 (2-1 to 7-2).
Eight different scorers netted in a senior
fixture for Newcastle for the first time ever in all competitions, becoming only the second side to have done so in the PL, after
Manchester United also registered eight in a 9-0 home mauling of
Southampton in February 2021 (although that comprised of seven of
their own scorers - one of whom scored twice - and a Saints OG).
Newcastle are only the third side to have scored eight goals
or more in a PL away game - and Harvey Barnes was on the winning
side in two of those games*:
2019/20 Southampton 0-9 Leicester City*
1998/99 Nottingham Forest 1-8 Manchester United
2023/24 Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle United*
The highest goal total by one team in a single PL game remains nine,
recorded on five occasions: Manchester United (twice), Leicester
City, Liverpool and Spurs.
The win restored Newcastle's positive all-time PL goal difference lost under Steve Bruce. Only
eight other sides can boast that, six currently in the PL (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea,
Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester City) and two former PL sides (Blackburn Rovers and Leeds
United).
Sean Longstaff netted his fifth PL goal almost a year after his
fourth came away at Fulham. He now has nine in all competitions for
the club.
Dan Burn doubled his PL tally for United after scoring his first
at home to Brighton back in April. He has three to his name
including one in the Carabao Cup verus Leicester City last season.
Sven Botman got off the mark for Newcastle in his 50th
appearance in all competitions. He's the 166th different Magpie to
register a goal in the PL.
Callum Wilson's 42nd strike for the club takes him one off his
Bournemouth PL total.
NUFC PL scoring list - all-time:
Les Ferdinand 41
Callum Wilson 42
Shola Ameobi 43
Andy Cole 43
Peter Beardsley 46
(OG 48)
Alan Shearer 148
Anthony Gordon now has three goals for the Magpies and after one
in a draw at Chelsea and one in a home loss to Liverpool he finished
on the winning side.
Miggy Almiron scored his 21st PL goal on his 150th PL
appearance, taking him one behind Laurent Robert.
Bruno Guimaraes reached double figures in the PL with his first
strike of the season. Ten goals matches the total of current team
mate Fabian Schar and he moves one ahead of club captain Jamaal
Lascelles.
Alexander Isak now has three club goals this season and 13 in
total, all scored in the PL. That total of 13 takes him level with
Joe Willock and two behind Joelinton.
16 goals from their opening six league games is Newcastle's best scoring
start to a season since they smashed in 22 from the first half dozen
league fixtures of 1994/95.
NUFC after six PL games - last 12 seasons:
2011/12 12 points, 4th
2012/13 9 points, 9th
2013/14 7 points, 16th
2014/15 3 points, 19th
2015/16 2 points, 19th
2017/18 9 points, 9th
2018/19 2 points, 18th
2019/20 5 points, 17th
2020/21 8 points, 14th
2021/22 3 points, 17th
2022/23 7 points, 11th
2023/24 9 points, 8th
The win restored Newcastle's positive all-time PL goal difference that was
lost under Steve Bruce. Only six other current top tier sides can boast
that (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester
City). Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United the two other non-PL sides.
There was a Magpies debut for Lewis Hall from the bench,
becoming the 261st player to have played for the club in the Premier
League. Kieran Trippier meanwhile completed his half century
of Premier League games for Newcastle.
Newcastle recorded back to back PL clean sheets for the first
time since January 2023 (Fulham home won 1-0, Palace away drew 0-0).
The club's dark blue third choice kit enjoyed a memorable first
competitive senior airing.
The Blades remain winless since their PL
return, with one point from six games. History failed to repeat itself from our last visit here, when a 0-1
defeat for the Magpies in January 2021 was Sheffield United's first
PL win of that season.
This result was also Sheffield United's worst-ever home defeat in
all competitions,
exceeding their 2-7 loss to Rotherham United in Division Two during
December 1956.
Toon @ Bramall Lane - last 10:
2023/24 won 8-0 S.Longstaff, Burn, Botman, Wilson, Almiron, Gordon, Guimaraes, Isak (PL)
2020/21 lost 0-1 (PL)
2019/20 won 2-0 Saint-Maximin, Shelvey (PL)
2015/16 drew 2-2 Wijnaldum, S.de Jong (FR)
2009/10 won 1-0 og(Morgan) (Ch)
2006/07 won 2-1 Martins, Steven Taylor (PL)
1993/94 lost 0-2 (PL)
1989/90 drew 1-1 og(Morris) (D2)
1988/89 lost 0-3 (LC)
1978/79 lost 0-1 (D2)
Our most resounding victory over the Blades before today was a 6-0 Second
Division win at SJP in September 1937. At Bramall Lane, the previous best
return of 3-0 wins in October 1920 and April 1932 (both in Division One)
was shattered.

The team that brought you a trio of
4-1s and one 5-1 away win last season went one step further on
Sunday, scoring a couple more for good measure to reach previously
uncharted territory on the road for the club in 130 years of league
participation.
An unforgettable afternoon in the Steel City ended after eight goals
were scored without reply by eight different players; a feat made
even more incredible by this game concluding a week during which the side
returned to Champions League action with an energy-sapping
rearguard action in Milan.
Many of those in the away end may have been nursing sore heads but
there was no trace of any hangover in the visiting dressing room at
Bramall Lane.
Eddie Howe's team allowed the hosts to make and miss a couple of
early half chances, but then hit form with a three goal first half salvo
from the unlikely
trio of Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn and Sven Botman.
Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon were to the fore as that assault
continued; the former making a well-timed return to form from set
pieces and the latter running the home side ragged after hastily
appearing from the bench to replace foot injury victim Harvey
Barnes.
Newcastle could have inflicted even greater punishment in the
opening 45 minute on a Blades side missing a substantial portion of
the squad due to injury and suspension, had Callum Wilson not
spurned three excellent chances and a dubious VAR call deprived Gordon of a penalty award.
With old campaigner Stuart McCall prowling around the technical
area, Paul Heckingbottom had the opportunity to refashion his side at the break but gaping holes in their midfield remained and they
would be exploited by a rampant Magpies side that
maintained their relentless onslaught.
Wilson
finally got his goal as Trippier completed his own personal treble of
assists to mark a half century of league outings for the club before
Gordon unleashed an unstoppable effort that curled into the goal
- prompting another wave of disconsolate home fans to rise from
their seats. Next to get in on the
act was Miggy Almiron, having earlier seen a close-range finish rightly ruled out
for offside. £150m-worth of talent then entered the action in the
shape of
Sandro Tonali, Alexander Isak and Tino Livramento in what
was close to an act of cruelty by Eddie Howe - and the sort of thing
we had done to us just a couple of years ago by the likes of
Manchester City.
A hoped-for debut strike from from Elliot Anderson failed to
materialise, but Bruno exploited the lack of defensive work required
by getting off the mark for the season before Isak rounded off what was the
nearest thing to a cricket score seen on this ground since Yorkshire
took their leave in 1973.
There's a bigger picture of the one-sided aspect to this game in
terms of the have and have not composition of the Premier League,
but that's not for today. What we will say though is that what
Bramall Lane lacks in players or facilities it makes up for with
internet signal. What's their secret?
Full time was met with roars from the away support and relief from
the battalion of stewards who raced across the perimeter track in
front of them following all five second half goals (and Almiron's
disallowed one) to try and deter potential pitch invasions. In
fairness a few of them took the ironic cheers and catcalls in good
spirits as they retraced their steps - better to have a moving human
cordon than static ones of a previous era obstructing the view, or
worse still, fences. Having
acknowledged the delight among the younger element in midweek in
beginning their European adventure, there was substantial
satisfaction in seeing a mature set of supporters here today - a
good number of whom were also present on previous dark days. They
deserved to witness this.
Playing our curmudgeon card at this point, anyone ever tempted to
label a poor display by this team as the "worst ever" is
directed to our 1980/81 season, when it took us 21 away league games
to score as many times as we did here today in less than 90 minutes.
Never mind loyalty points, the club should have given out campaign
medals that year. This is light years away.
And so, rumours of our demise proved to be premature, along with the
Howe in peril chat that surfaced in some quarters following the
Brighton defeat. Our first half dozen fixtures largely adhered to form
and history, leaving Newcastle two points and three places better
off than a year ago.
Question marks about rotation are yet to be answered and have been
partly offset over narrowing squad availability with the Barnes
injury and Gordon's proximity to suspension. If nothing else though,
Joelinton's current absence has at least slowed down his acquisition
of bookings.
We remain a work in progress, with today a pertinent and welcome
reminder that the potential is unlimited and the occasions when
things do click are immensely enjoyable. If you're looking for a
yardstick of progress, Botman's 50 games for us have seen him beaten
just eight times.
The visiting players
took the field to acknowledge their support at full time, the song
from the away end concise and accurate: "this is the best
trip I've ever been on". They weren't wrong.
