Full time: Town 1 Toon 1
There were reserve
team debuts for Dylan Charlton and Josh Donaldson and a first start for
recent signing Travis Hernes.
Newcastle's
U21 side began this season's Premier League Cup campaign on
Wednesday with a point against Huddersfield at John Smiths Stadium.
With one eye on United's European U19 Youth League opener next week
against AC Milan, United's line-up was deliberately youthful with
the likes of Remi Savage, Lucas De Bolle and Amadou Diallo omitted.
Chances were at a premium in a scoreless opening half, visiting
goalkeeper Aidan Harris quickly off his line to deny Luke Daley just
after the half hour mark.
The green-clad visitors meanwhile came close to breaking the
deadlock on 63 minutes, when Ben Parkinson just failed to get his
effort on target.
The Magpies did go ahead four minutes later, 17 year-old reserve
debutant Josh Donaldson in the right place to finish after the ball
ran free in the Town area.
That lead lasted only until the 71st minute however, when Kyle
Hudlin squeezed his shot past Harris.
Newcastle finished the tie a man short, after James Huntley saw red
for a second bookable offence in the 83rd minute.
This was the first of six ties for the Magpies in Group F, facing
Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Fleetwood Town home and away
over the coming months.
