Wearing number 5 for United but listed as 15 on the teamsheet was
Cathal Heffernan, an 18 year-old Irish youth international defender.
Previously with Cork City, Heffernan joined AC Milan last year and
is believed to be on trial with Newcastle currently. This looks to
have been his second game, after featuring against Carlisle United
the previous weekend.
An
inexperienced U21 side continued their pre-season programme on Saturday by facing
League Two side Barrow AFC at their Holker Street home.
The Bluebirds went ahead on 20 minutes when visiting goalkeeper Will
Brown blocked Niall Canavan's header following a corner but was
unable to prevent Emile Acquah from nodding in the rebound.
Barrow's lead was then doubled five minutes later when David Worrall
curled home a free kick and it was 3-0 eight minutes before the
interval when Canavan had an easy headed finish after Jamie Proctor
sent a corner back across the face of goal.
Proctor himself then added a fourth in the second minute of time
added on, calmly slotting home after Rory Feely cut the ball back
from the right.
Newcastle's sole reply came 11 minutes into the second half; Amadou
Diallo giving former Magpie Paul Farman no chance with a direct free
kick from a similar position to Barrow's Worrall earlier in the
game.
