12 mins Cesare
3Casadei had room in the centre circle to pass to Ian Maatsen
who played in Nicolas Jackson. Finding space between our central pairing, Jackson
advanced and rolled it past Martin Dubravka from the edge of the area as the 'keeper came out to narrow the angle. 0-1
45+4 mins Anthony Gordon cut in from the left and as he evaded a challenge he had the choice of passing to Miguel Almiron or Kieran Trippier making forward runs down our right. He elected to pass to the Paraguayan and after a couple of touches
Miguel Almiron stroked it into the far corner. Replays showed Miggy to be suspiciously offside but perhaps the new "daylight" offside directive went in our man's favour.
His goal celebration revived one from when an Atlanta player, when he'd make
a "Dragon Ball" pose with team mate Josef Martinez. No, us
neither.... 1-1

Eddie Howe
said:
"The players did really well physically because it's
been a hard week for them.
"It was a really good exercise and a challenge for us. I
thought it was a battling, gritty, determined second half and a
young team at the end. We saw it out and got a good draw."
On Fabian Schar:
"We think he's OK. He's saying he's got a tightness in
his hamstring - he doesn't think he's pulled any muscle."
On Lewis Miley:
"He will stay with us this season. There’s no
thought of sending him on loan.
"For me he’s too young to be exposed to that at the moment. I
think he needs to stay with his family and to train with us and to
learn and develop around the players we have.
"I don’t think he’s surprised me because I’ve seen it for
six months, including at the back end of last season, just how well
he was developing and how strong he looked in the group.
"Physically is always the biggest test for someone so young but
you’ve seen him today, he’s a very, very good athlete, he’s
strong and a good size and he looks like he can handle the
environment he’s in. The next step is to push him and develop him
and I’m sure he’ll get minutes this year.
"The biggest challenge for Lewi will be to handle the attention
and exposure. It’s dealing with that and then waiting for his
opportunity while keeping his head. He’ll have a lot of people in
his ear. All those things contribute to how you handle success and
when it comes early that can be difficult.
"We’ll try and guide him and educate him as best we
can."
Mauricio Pochettino:
"At the moment the dynamic is very good, really good guys and they
are sharing the time together. "It is
difficult because sometimes in every game three, four, five players cannot
play and that is difficult because the mood is difficult. "It
is about creating a squad with good balance and people who have the
opportunity to play and can compete for their place. "That
is a big job and challenge for us in the transfer window to build a good
relationship and good balance. Then, if players are not happy because they
believe they are not going to play, we are going to find a solution with
the club and fix the situation. "What we cannot
have is a massive squad, players not involved and then it's going to
create a mess in the squad. Maybe less is more and more is less, it is not
mathematic. That is why I need to make clear we don't need a big squad. "We
need 22, 23, 24 players with some younger and that's it. I am so sorry
because maybe the decision will be tough but we need to build a good and
balanced team who want to compete for things."
Aside from the 73,214 that
witnessed our Charity Shield defeat to Manchester United at Wembley back
in 1996, tonight was the largest recorded attendance ever at a
non-competitive match that Newcastle played in - and the largest for any
game overseas since the claimed 100,000 present for the Champions League
visit to Dynamo Kiev in 1997.
In terms of friendly meetings with the Blues, it's been anything
but plain sailing frankly:
1955 lost 0-3 at Stamford Bridge (Charity Shield)
1997 drew 1-1 at Goodison Park (lost 1-3 pens)
2003 drew 0-0 in Kuala Lumpur (lost 4-5 pens) 2023 drew 1-1 in
Atlanta
That shootout reverse in 1997 was completely overshadowed by the
89th minute departure of Alan Shearer on a stretcher after suffering
an ankle injury that sidelined him until the following January.
This 2023 meeting fell 26 years to the day but thankfully
there was no sign of a stretcher. NUFC in the USA - PL era to date:

This may have been a kickabout, but one
staged in the most magnificent of settings and with a memorable
moment for Miguel Almiron returning home with many of his former
fans looking on.
Two months after they drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle and
Chelsea reprised that season closing result in Atlanta United's
astonishing Mercedes Benz Stadium as the Premier
League's "Summer Series" competition continued.
A sold-out crowd of almost 71,000 included many Blues sympathisers,
a scattering of black and whites and a good number of hometown
supporters who gathered to welcome back the player last sighted here
in December 2018 before his sale to the Magpies the following month.
The Paraguayan repaid that support with an excellent run and
finish in first half added time, sending the sides in level after Nicolas Jackson had netted against the run of play after
12 minutes.
Almiron's goal was created by Anthony Gordon, who again caught the
eye and was our chief attacking threat until some late forays by
Alexander Isak threatened to open up the opposition.
With one eye on Friday's concluding game, Eddie Howe named a strong side including youngster Lewis Miley with a lightweight bench - the
rest of the seniors rested ahead of Brighton.
Lining up in a more familiar formation than against Aston Villa,
United lost Fabian Schar during the first half with a hamstring
tweak; Dan Burn moving from left back and Alex Murphy
going there
- with the rookie defender forcing a save out of Arrizabalaga
after meeting Isak's cross.
There was just one interval change but it was a productive one; Nick
Pope proving his fitness following post-season finger surgery with a
trio of top-drawer stops to deny Christopher Nkunku, Conor Gallagher
and best of all, Ben Chilwell in time added on.
The core of the side played most or all of the game; Almiron
withdrawn late on to loud cheers and unsurprisingly awarded the man
of the match.
Back to that ground though; number 356
on the NUFC.com never-ending tour and on a different scale and level
to anything experienced before. The wow factor from the vast size of
the place extends to the mind-blowing big screens mounted above the
pitch
In scale it's on a par with Wembley and Old Trafford, but despite
the enclosed roof there's a feeling of airiness and space lacking at
either venue. In crowd terms there's a comparison to be made with
the National Stadium in Kiev, but almost 100,000 fervent Ukrainians
created a rather more fervent atmosphere than here - doubtless aided
by the bottles of vodka many of them carried....
A noticeable lack of stewarding and restrictions over where to walk
meant that it was possible to complete a full lap of the place on
all three levels - something unimaginable in Europe.
We did spot NUFC CEO Darren Eales making his way through the
crowds pre-game - also back on his old stamping ground, having
delivered this stadium while serving as Atlanta United President.
We're totally committed to remaining at SJP, but it's impossible not
to think "what if?" when actually confronted by the
enormity of this place first hand.
