Friday saw the London Geordies play host to their
Tyneside brethren, as West London non-leaguers Hanwell Town welcomed
Newcastle's U21 side for a kickabout against Brentford's B team.
A sprinkling of exiles and local Magpie sympathisers were at the
Powerday Stadium to see United triumph thanks to Amadou Diallo's fine
28th minute strike.
Fielding a mixture of reserves, trialists and youngsters after playing
in Belgium days earlier, Brentford were restricted to few chances - Max
Thompson foiling Tony Yogane on the hour mark.
A generous piece of officiating gave the Bees an opportunity to level
with 20 minutes remaining, the referee initially waving away hopeful
appeals for a handball in the box - only to then point to the spot
following a raised flag from one of his assistants.
Justice was done though; Lucas Vine emulating club colleague Ivan Toney
in the recent Premier League meeting of these two sides by weakly
placing his penalty at the United 'keeper.
Among those looking on with interest was former Scottish international
defender Stephen Pressley, now part of Brentford's youth coaching staff.
While United's PL2 season has now ended, the Bees were ticking over
before hosting Blackburn Rovers in the final of the Premier League Cup
on Tuesday.
Hosts Hanwell Town trace their roots back to Tyneside railway workers
who relocated to the area in 1920 during construction of the underground
network. Sporting black and white striped home shirts as a result, they
finished fourteenth in the Southern Premier League South in the season
just ended - one level below the National League North and South.
Many thanks to everyone involved with HTFC for their warm welcome
tonight - in particular former player, manager and present day director
Ray Duffy, who generously stood the six thirsty travellers from Tyneside
a round of drinks before the game.
Rather more Mags had been here back in February, when Hanwell generously
opened their doors for Newcastle fans on the day of the Carabao Cup
Final at Wembley. Meanwhile, links between Hanwell and the London Mags
continue to strengthen, with the third annual Geordie Cup between the
respective supporter XIs taking place at this ground on Bank Holiday
Monday (2pm).
