PL2 debuts for Ryan Fraser and Harrison Ashby
took the number of players used to 34.
In all competitions this was Newcastle's first competitive success in 10
games, since Lewis Miley's late goal won a Premier League cup tie against
Crystal Palace in South London last December.
In PL2, this was a first win in 11, since Southampton were beaten at
Whitley Park in October.
The
U21s ended their PL2 home campaign on a high note
on Monday, racing into a three goal lead that was wiped out by the
visitors before claiming victory thanks to a memorable strike.
Ex-Magpie Alan Neilson brought his Canaries to the North East
looking for three points to maintain their promotion playoff hopes,
but soon saw his side come unstuck.
Making a first reserve appearance since his demotion from the senior
squad, Ryan Fraser was a continual threat down the United left;
blasting one first-time effort across the goal and seeing another
disallowed before powering a superb shot into the top corner.
That came on 15 minutes and within eight minutes a second unfamiliar
face had doubled the lead - right back Harrison Ashby marking his
debut by converting a low shot from the right side of the box.
Fraser had played his part in the build-up to that goal and claimed
an assist for his side's third of the game on 27 minutes, crossing
from the left for Amadou Diallo to arrive at the back post and head
home from close in.
The Canaries hit back before the break with a reply in the 33rd
minute; Fin Welch running from the halfway line before beating
goalkeeper Max Thompson.
Thompson then escaped with just a yellow card after coming out of
his area and upending Abu Kamara in the 38th but the consequent
free-kick came to nothing.
City did get their a second a minute before half-time, Kamara
converting from the spot after Remi Savage had fouled him in the
box.
Norwich completed their comeback just three minutes into the second
period, Welch bundling the ball home for his second and his side's
third after a free kick wasn't deal with adequately.
There were chances at both ends before United ended their wait for a
league win with a 78th minute strike; Diallo evading City substitute
Sean Stewart down the right and played the ball infield for 16
year-old Lewis Miley to curl in a glorious first time effort that
gave Joe Rose absolutely no chance.
