15mins: Phil Foden wove into the box, eluded three defenders and shot. His on-target strike would probably have been saved but deflected off Sven Botman to wrong-foot Pope in the goal nearest to the visiting fans. The luckless Botman had been in a similar situation against the other Manchester club at Wembley the previous weekend. 0-1 Half time: City 1 United 0
67mins:
Trippier lost possession
to Nathan Ake
midway in the United half. and a rapid series of passes
involving Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland led
to Bernado Silva striking from 12 yards out as he fell.
The Portuguese midfielder had come off the bench barely two
minutes earlier. Full time: City 2 United 0
Eddie Howe:
"I
thought it was a very good performance from us in many aspects. I
thought we pressed really well and were brave. I thought the players
were committed to that. I thought we unsettled them.
"But they have a habit of
scoring with minimal chances, which is what they did today. And we
had chances but it weren't as clinical as them. "It's just one of those
things, I think we're going through a phase where that's happening
to us. "I think our general
performance, we have to be very positive about. We have to
acknowledge that there's improvements to make, but, compared to last
year, we're getting closer. We have to be positive about that. "We're trying
to be the team. We want to be in every game. We haven't tried to
change our approach, because I don't think you learn from it, and
the scoreline probably becomes a heavier defeat. "We were competitive today,
we had our chances and we didn't take them and City did. If you're
still creating chances, I'll back the players over the long term we
will start scoring again. We need to as the confidence of the team
is dependent on it.
"When you lose such a huge
game (the Carabao Cup final), naturally there's a
disappointment in the group. But I don't think you saw a team
wallowing in self-pity. You saw a team very brave, very aggressive
and very much in that game. "Keeping that high energy
up for 90 minutes is difficult so we wanted to break that up with
the substitutions. "I was pleased with the impact but then the
second goal comes at a bad time for us. It could have been
different, there were moments for us today. "Probably the one that
sticks in my head is Joelinton's chance at 1-0. They're big moments
and when you play games like this you have to be clinical because
you're not going to get many chances. Unfortunately. that didn't
happen."
Pep Guardiola said: "Bernardo has never been a top, top scorer or top assists but he helps us to play better. If you want statistics, you can go to big data and write a big article about that, but there are some things that people don’t come to in the data. It’s something that is unique. And Bernardo is unique. "To make us, all of us, play better, be aggressive and play our rhythm that we need to play better. The game, in some moments, is so quick, so quick, so quick. Sometimes it is necessary but sometimes it is not. Bernardo helps us to play in a different pause to have to make the explosion. He is unique. Bernardo is unique in the world in doing this."We started the first five minutes (just OK) and after we got the goal that helped us with a brilliant action from Phil. We were a little bit lucky with the deflection but he was aggressive like he always has been. We missed that a little bit this season – (the mindset of) it doesn’t matter what happened, I’ll go at you. When that happens, a deflection will come for your side. "An incredibly good result for us because it was a tricky game. Now we have three games in different competitions before the international break which will define our season."
Saturday
saw Newcastle suffer a third
successive 0-2 defeat in league and cup, Manchester City taking full
advantage of our
profligacy to record their 14th successive win over us at the Etihad Stadium. Winless in their last four PL games, Newcastle made a trio of changes to their starting line-up but both Dan Burn and Wilson kept their places. Jamaal Lascelles replaced concussion victim Fabian Schar, Gordon made his first Toon start for Saint-Maximin and Nick Pope returned following suspension, Martin Dubravka on the bench in preference to Loris Karius. A long afternoon seemed on the cards when Phil Foden's mazy run into the area on 15 minutes ended with the ball in the back of the net via the boot of Sven Botman. That was poor from a defensive perspective, but City's advantage should quickly have been wiped out when Bruno Guimaraes centred for Kieran Trippier to nod back across goal - only for Wilson to inexplicably scuff his attempted shot barely six yards out. Longstaff then seemed a certain scorer before the break but couldn't get his shot away, Gordon having similarly failed earlier when it was still scoreless. A subdued away end woke up to the fact that the visitors were still in this contest after the hosts resumed the second half in listless fashion - the usual morgue-like atmosphere here hardly inspiring Pep & Co. That optimism increased as a proactive treble swap by United brought Joe Willock, Alexander Isak and Saint-Maximin into the fray. A trio of near misses quickly followed, most glaringly one from Joelinton after Joe Willock fired a teasing low centre across the six yard box from the right. Sadly though that mini-revival soon stalled as Pope's clearance led to Trippier losing possession and City stylishly cutting through the visiting defence or Silva to fire home in the 67th minute - ending the match as a contest. So near but so far once again then; still a sizeable distance away from competing with the league's elite, despite their evident uplift this season. The progress made though is in real danger of being undone by our recurring goalscoring issues since the World Cup. If nothing else, avoiding our habitual humiliation at this ground was the cause of fleeting satisfaction and the way in which Lascelles stuck to his task of shadowing Haaland belied the fact that this was his first league start since August. Sadly though he was unable to help remedy our ongoing lack of prowess from set pieces at the other end of the field. Preparations now begin for a tricky home game on Sunday against a Wolves side who ended their own three game winless run by beating Spurs. There'll be at least one enforced change from today's XI, Joelinton's tenth yellow card of the season prompting a automatic two game suspension. Niall/Biffa |
