Newcastle's well
documented goalkeeping shortage for the Carabao Cup Final two days after
this game saw Will Brown make only his second PL2 appearance of the
season, with Academy custodian Aidan Harris involved for the first time at
this level as an unused substitute.
With Jude Smith sidelined due to injury, youngster Max Thompson travelled
with the first to Wembley as cover for Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie.
A late strike from Ben Parkinson was enough to earn Newcastle U21s a
point in their PL2 clash at Stoke's Clayton Wood training
ground on Friday night.
Clad in their
blue change strip, Ben Dawson's side took a ninth minute lead when
defender Charlie Wiggett shot home following a corner.
However the hosts ended the half ahead: Dara McGuinness striking in
the 34th and 39th minutes; team mate Jacob Holland-Wilkinson
following up to ensure the second effort crossed the line.
The
Potters looked set for a seasonal double following their victory on
Tyneside back in August, but were reduced to ten men after defender Gabriel
was shown his second yellow card of the game on 80
minutes.
United's teenage striker Ben Parkinson then struck in the second
minute of added time, bagging his third reserve team goal in as many
games.
