3 mins Following Joe Willock's disallowed goal,
play resumed with a West Ham goal kick that was nodded forward by Fabian Schar into the centre circle.
Joelinton shielded the ball allowing Sean Longstaff to play a perfectly
weighted pass through to the advancing Callum Wilson.
Strided between Angelo Ogbonna and Thilo Kehrer, he had the fairly simple task of
passing it into the net around Lukasz Fabianski as the 'keeper came out of
the Gallowgate goal.

Declan Rice's flag kick from the North West corner made it through to the
back post, falling nicely for Lucas Paqueta to stab it past marker Kieran Trippier and
goalkeeper Nick
Pope.
The Brazilian's acrobatic celebration was positively LuaLuaesque. 1-1

Eddie
Howe said:
"If
you can’t win, you don’t lose, and we’ve done that very well. We’ve
picked up vital points in this run. Yes, we haven’t won the games
in the last few that we would have liked, but it’s never going to be
plain sailing.
"We were never going to win every game. It’s such a competitive
league, the games are so difficult.
It was a tight game - a very bright start and a strange opening,
(but) we didn’t quite carry that on for the rest of the first
half.
"The second half we were quite good, we just couldn’t break them down.
West Ham have got very good players. I don’t think we stamped our
authority on the game, we had a couple of good chances to win the game
but it didn’t happen.
"Teams when they play us now will make it difficult for us, The onus
is on us to break teams down.
"The start of the game was brilliant from our perspective - we were
electric.
Unfortunate with the first one, very pleased for Callum on the second one
and then we hoped to kick on from that moment but it never quite
materialised,
"West Ham stabilised themselves and I thought they were good first half we
maybe dipped below our levels that we can achieve. Second half I was a lot
happier with our general performance, probably bar taking those chances we
created."
On Callum Wilson:
"I thought it was a great finish because he's moving at speed, he's on his
left foot, really really good finish so pleased for him, every goalscorer
needs to score - he would have felt the relief in that. And then he had the
two chances in the second half, again I'm just pleased he's in those
positions to score."
"Overall
(I'm) disappointed (with a point).
"Having to put it into perspective as well, I don't want to criticise the
players because I felt they've given everything this week, they've really
emptied the tank; there's nothing left physically, emotionally they really
have gone to the well.
"It wasn't for the want of trying we did create chances we probably weren't
at our very best today although I thought West Ham competed really well."
On the absent Bruno Guimaraes:
"I think
we missed Bruno today, but we were always going to miss Bruno
because he’s so unique and slightly different.
"But I do think our midfield
players who played in his absence all played well. I don’t think
it’s a criticism of them – I just think he’s irreplaceable. You’re
going to miss him, and I think we missed his creative eye more than
anything else.”
On Allan Saint-Maximin:
"Maxi will benefit from today. I thought we saw
him in flashes. We probably didn’t get him the ball enough. West Ham
defended well against him.
“So I think there’s a combination of factors. But I thought the
application was there.”
On new boy Anthony Gordon:
"I’m really pleased with his debut."
On media claims he's been driving round Tyneside despite being
disqualified:
"I’m aware of it: I’m not sure the story quite matches up but I need to find
out more.”
On Declan Rice of West
Ham:
"He was very good, but that’s no surprise. He’s a top-quality
player. He’s done that on the international stage."
Post-match footage showed Rice talking to members of the
Newcastle team and staff, prompting some tapping up claims (or
hopes). It's worth pointing out that he'll know Graham Jones, Nick
Pope, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier from England get-togethers.
David Moyes said:
"We played really well in the first half,
except for the first minute. We did a good job, we put them under pressure,
we passed the ball much better than we’ve been passing it for a while, we
didn’t turn the ball over as often, we retained possession when we got it
into the forwards and the boys in the middle of the park got about the job
and helped.
"So, overall, I’m really pleased. It’s probably one of
our best performances this season because we had to show a bit of fight and
a bit of spirit. We had to show that we didn’t buckle after we went a goal
down and also I was really pleased with how we played with the ball.
"We didn’t panic when we went a goal down, took some
passes and made it, so there were lots and lots of good things from the from
the players today.
"I think we deserve a little bit of credit because we've not been playing so
well, but I thought we played very well today. We deserve a lot of credit
for coming here and putting on such a good performance.
"That first minute was expected by how Newcastle have been starting games so
we've only got ourselves to blame. We got away with the first one, but you'd
have hoped the linesman would have seen it earlier. We then gave them a goal
20, 30 seconds later.
"We responded absolutely fantastically. We played brilliantly well in the
first half. We passed the ball well, we showed good control and made some
decent opportunities ourselves. I'm really pleased with how the players
played.
"It's only a point but we take it. It was a difficult game for us and it
keeps a bit of a run going for us. We'd have liked to have come here and
won, but we were up against a team in really good form.
"It was nearly going to run around the
pitch that we got a goal from a set piece, it was that good, because we’ve
just not been clinical from them and we’ve not been as good.
"We did what we did to try to find a way and we got in
a position and I thought his composure when the ball came through to him
(was great) and he didn’t panic or slash at the ball.
I’ve not seen it again, but it looked like quite a composed
finish at the back post.
"We were actually talking about it this morning and
we’ve only played two home games since the World Cup, since 26 December when
we started back, so it feels like we’ve very rarely been home at the moment,
but we need to improve our away form.
"We’ve now drawn at Leeds and Newcastle, we won in the
FA Cup at Brentford and have beaten Derby away in the cup as well, so
hopefully we need to start showing that toughness and that resilience and I
thought for most of the game we showed that today.
"We’re so desperate. We are not enjoying being where we
are. We’re not enjoying maybe the way we have not played as well as we’d
liked, but today, if I was a supporter, I would have enjoyed the way my team
played today.
"Newcastle are a big, big side and we got our fingers burnt at first but,
after that, we played incredibly well.”
On Declan Rice:
"Declan’s going to be a top player; undoubtedly he’ll be a British transfer
record when he leaves West Ham – and then some, but I hope that’s not
anytime soon. Declan and Paquetá were immense, top quality."
On SJP:
"The crowd do incredibly well to raise their energy. If ever there
was a story on what the crowd do to raise the energy levels of the players,
it's here at the moment. It looks as if they're all running a couple of
miles extra."
Having set a new
all-time club record of 15 top-flight games without defeat with the
draw at Crystal Palace, Newcastle
extended that run to 16 games.
The Magpies extended their unbeaten run at SJP to 16 games in PL
and cup games and 12 in the PL only. 11 of those PL games
came this season; our longest unbeaten start to a top-flight season
since 1995/96 (13 games.) The best start to a PL campaign was 1994//95
(18 games).
Callum Wilson's seventh PL goal of the season came after a six game
barren run that extended to 298 minutes. In all competitions,
those figures were ten games and 518 minutes.
Wilson's third minute strike matches Chris Wood's penalty conversion at
Leicester City in being our fastest of the season.
Our number 9 now has 27 PL goals for Newcastle,
moving one clear of Michael Owen in the all-time list, drawing level with Craig Bellamy and
now one behind Obafemi Martins.
Wilson netted against the Hammers for the third time in four
games for Newcastle. With his Bournemouth record,
those figures are 10 goals in 12.
Lucas Paqueta became the first opposition player to net in the PL at SJP
since Brentford's Ivan Toney in October, a run of 518 minutes.
That goal was also the first Newcastle have conceded in the PL before
half time since Ruben Neves of Wolves in August - a run of 16 games
before today.
Nick Pope conceded a goal in the PL for the first time since Southampton's Romain Perraud beat him in November - ending a shutout sequence of
574 minutes including
six
full games.
Anthony Gordon became the 256th player to represent NUFC
in the PL.
Miguel Almiron made his 150th appearance for the club in
all competitions (127 starts).
The big Four-O:
United reached the fabled 40 point mark in their 21st
PL

Following the elation of Tuesday's League Cup success, Saturday night brought
deflation for Newcastle and their fans, as they failed to build on a
perfect start and ended up sharing the points with the visitors.
Making one enforced change with Alan Saint-Maximin on for the
suspended Bruno Guimaraes and unable to call upon concussion victim Alexander Isak,
the Magpies had the ball in the net 37 seconds after the first whistle
when Joe Willock drove in from the right hand side of the box.
Celebrations from home players were wholehearted but less enthusiastic
in the parts of the ground who had seen Miggy Almiron clearly run the
ball over the right hand byline before pulling it back for Willock to
sweep home - and a VAR check soon confirmed that it wouldn't stand.
Play restarted around a minute and a half later, but just 12 second
later those home fans were back on their feet as Callum Wilson timed
his run perfectly to stay onside and bury a fine shot that
certainly did count.
That early flurry wasn't built upon however and the Hammers deservedly equalised
when Lucas Paqueta stabbed home at the Leazes End in the 32nd minute
after Declan Rice's corner made it to the far post.
Despite a welcome return to the scoresheet, Wilson will rue two golden
opportunities to win the game in the closing stages, the first supplied
by debutant substitute Anthony Gordon - on for the subdued
Saint-Maximin.
Gordon's perfect through ball to United's number 9 sent him scampering into
the box but just as he shaped to shoot, Nayef Aguerd made a vital last
ditch tackle.
Eight minutes from time there was an even clearer chance of a winner
when Kieran Trippier's free-kick from the right found Wilson unmarked six yards
out, but his firm header was directed straight at Lukasz Fabianski.
Aside from the Wilson opportunities and a booking for Joelinton after he
ludicrously dived in the box rather than continue, our efforts on goal
were limited and another goalkeeper departed without really being
tested.
In particular, the perceived aerial threat at set pieces from the big
lads coming forward doesn't translate into chances never mind goals.
Taking Jamaal Lascelles out of the defence may have solidified our
backline to an astonishing degree, but his conversions from set pieces
weren't replaced.
Defeat would have been tough on a West Ham side who
deservedly increased their points total on the road to six and also had
chances to grab a second goal, although Nick Pope was never really
tested.
Not many present would be aggrieved over the outcome, Rice giving an
industrious display for a resurgent Hammers side who intercepted as many
passes as any other opponent this season.
Following the efforts on and off the field against Southampton on
Tuesday, this always had the potential to be "after the Lord Mayor's
show" and so it proved, our forward momentum too often diluted by safety
play as the visitors defended in depth. That lack of inspiration also
seemed to permeate into the crowd today, with patchy outbreaks of
support rather than a wall of sound.
Our unbeaten league run was lengthened to 16 games though, the 40 point
mark was reached and a side with a cup final to look forward remain
undefeated on home turf since April. All reasons to be more than
cheerful.
A point saw the Magpies slip one place to fourth after Manchester United
beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at home.
Away defeats for leaders Arsenal and second-placed Manchester City
meanwhile provided the main interest, aside from the collective mirth of
the nation directed at Herr Klopp.
