Interim U21 coach Ben Dawson suffered his second defeat in a week on
Friday night, as the Magpies were beaten in Hampshire.
The game was
played at Southampton's Staplewood training ground
due to a waterlogged pitch at the original venue of nearby
non-league side AFC Totton.
Forced into an early change when Sam Bellis was unable to continue
due to injury, the hosts went ahead on the quarter hour when Lewis
Payne lobbed visiting goalkeeper Jude Smith.
Newcastle then made a change of their own, Michael Ndiweni replacing
fellow forward Isaac Westendorf.
Trailing at half time (with Saints having had another two efforts
disallowed) United had their best period of the game after the restart,
only to concede twice in
quick succession just after the hour.
Kamari Doyle made it 0-2 on 61 minutes before Jimmy Jay Morgan added
another at the second attempt just two minutes later.
The blue-clad visitors came close to reducing the deficit when Niall
Brookwell's effort was cleared off the line and Josh Scott shot against
the cross bar.
After Doyle struck the goal frame at the other end, Saints opened up a
four goal lead with nine minutes to go; Dom
Ballard converting a penalty kick following a foul on 15 year-old Jay Robinson.
Magpies substitute Michael Nidweni belatedly got his side off the
mark on 85 minutes from Amadou Diallo's pass.
