The game was preceded by a minute's applause in memory of Pele, who passed away at the age of 82 last Thursday.
Bruno Guimaraes appeared
clad in a Brazil shirt with "Pele 10" on the back
signed by Pele, wearing that
for the tribute before removing it to reveal his black and white shirt.
Players also wore
black armbands.
Wor Flags defied difficult conditions to mount a pre-game display across
the East Stand inspired by the club's 1996/97 away strip.

"Right from the start, we had some really good moments in the
game and you have to take one of those chances that we created.
"It's a sign of how far we've come that they were time-wasting and
taking seconds out of the game. From our perspective, we have to do
better in certain situations. All that was missing was the killer
instinct in front of goal.
"We became frustrated with our play and it became bitty and fragmented, but we were still producing chances right to the end. We're disappointed in the dressing room. We hoped to win today.
"A lot has happened in the year when you rewind 365 days and think back to where we were. The strides made by the players and everyone connected with the club, it's been a great year and we look forward now to another year ahead. We hope we can continue the momentum we've got."

"We defended really well, particularly set pieces because in the second half
specifically, they put balls forward almost every time they had a chance.
"Our mentality to get the clean sheet was fantastic and then executing what
we wanted on set-piece situations, we managed it really well. Illan Meslier
had a big day as well.
"We are very unified on the inside. It's a tight-knit group, it's a group
that cares about the club and about the direction of the club.
"Regardless of whether guys are in the starting line-up, coming off the
bench, everyone knows it requires all of our energy in the same direction to
give ourselves a chance to be a good team in this league. I think there's an
appreciation from the fans to see a hard-working, committed team.
"I thought, in the first half, maybe we could have gotten a goal and we were
actually quite good. It was unfortunate, maybe, but Newcastle have amazing
first halves.
"For us to get to half-time 0-0, play quite well and weather the storm in
the second half, I thought it was a good point."

Newcastle extended their unbeaten league record
to 12 games
at a soggy St. James'
Park on Saturday, but were unable to find the crucial goal that would
have ended 2022 with their seventh successive victory.
The visitors had conceded ten goals over the course of their last three
league outings and failed to keep a clean sheet on the road all season.
However poor finishing from us and desperate defending interspersed with
unchecked time-wasting from them was enough for Leeds to extend their
unbeaten record on Tyneside to four games.
Eddie Howe's side had made and missed the majority of goal chances in
the game; former White Chris Wood, Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar and
Sven Botman all unable to break the deadlock when well-placed.
At the other end, Nick Pope anticipated the occasional counter-attack
and palmed away Rodrigo's dangerous effort on 64 minutes - the only shot
on target that Jesse Marsch's side managed all afternoon.
Attacking the Gallowgate End as the rain lashed down, the came close to
breaking the deadlock three times in the closing stages, only for
Longstaff (twice) and Joelinton to blast harmlessly over Illian
Meslier's bar.
A frustrating stalemate threatened to get out of hand in second half
added time, as referee Simon Hooper failed to clamp down on the
time-wasting antics of the visitors - Callum Wilson one of several
players who attempted to take matters into their own hands, dumping
Meslier on his backside.
Referee Hooper though - who had done his best to ignore continual
fouling on Guimaraes all game - was content to only book Wilson and
Bruno for their part in the skirmishes that ended the game.
A stormy afternoon on and off the pitch then, but 2022 ends with
Newcastle sitting proudly third in the table and with the best defence
in the league - in stark contrast to the despair round these parts 12 months earlier.
Attention now moves on to Tuesday, when Newcastle face an Arsenal side
in rude health at a ground that has been the graveyard for our ambitions
on countless occasions.
The outcome of that game won't define our season, but will give a fair
indication of how far we've progressed - and what we're really up
against in terms of realising the owners' ambitions.
