In a
delicious echo of last season's penalty award against us here,
City made a mess of a clearance from their 'keeper which
allowed Miggy Almiron to pinch the ball and play it to Joelinton.
The Brazilian looked to work a one-two with Miggy on the edge of the box
but instead the ball pinged back to him via Wout Faes.
striding into the home area to be clumsily upended by
Daniel Amartey.
Chris Wood stepped
up to beat Danny Ward with a firm shot down the middle of the goal
in front of the South Stand.

An outrageous back heel
from Bruno Guimaraes in his own half took him away from City's
Patson Daka and opened up the space for him
to spray a crossfield pass to Kieran Trippier just inside the
Leicester half on the right touchline.
With Miggy Almiron haring ahead of him, Trippier played
the ball forward and the Paraguayan cut inside Luke Thomas at
speed before releasing a pass to Bruno. The Brazilian's return
ball was perfectly-weighted, Miggy taking it in his stride and
stroking home from eight yards.
His goal celebration took him to the corner flag, where a paper
dart was launched towards him from the home seats. Like
everything else that City created today though, it flew
harmlessly wide....2-0

Kieran Trippier cheekily won a
corner kick on the United right and his delivery into the six yard box was headed in by
the unchecked Joelinton, whose spring to take alleged marker
Boubakary Soumare out of the equation was Sheareresque.
The goalscorer disappeared behind the goal to celebrate with in
the manner decreed for an expectant father; sucking his thumb
and tucking the ball up his shirt.

Eddie Howe: Asked about a title challenge:
"My attitude won't change to that.
"I have no problems
with the supporters dreaming and talking and speculating about what
we can achieve and no doubt the media will, I can't control that.
"The only think we need to be mindful of internally is just focus on what we can control and our own thoughts and actions and how we train and how we prepare. And not look too far ahead and not listen to too much news and media and just focus on our training and make sure we focus on it game by game.
"This is the toughest league in the world for a reason and our
opposition no doubt will be watching us and preparing for us, so we
have to be ready.
"I'd say the performance was up there when you consider the
opposition and the game and the break and everything that has gone
into preparing this game.
"To start in the manner we did was hugely important. Credit to the players for how they have attacked their game.
"We scored some very good goals and the general mentality of the group was very, very good after the break.
"Today was a big test for us and (I'm) delighted (with) how the players started.
"We can do anything: the season is still young enough for all possibilities to exist for us. I want the fans to believe we can do anything.
"Coming here knowing how difficult it was going to be, the start was really important to us. The first half an hour, we were excellent. It's a trademark goal for Miggy and a really good team move.
"Leicester showed their quality in the second half and it was difficult to get the ball. I was keen for us to go on and control the game more but I do think we minimised their threat.
"Credit to the team, it's another clean sheet and that's important."

"The start of the game clearly was really disappointing. We were
so slow, the attitude at the beginning was really poor and before we
know it we were 2-0 down.
"We lacked many things today, they were way better than us from the
start of the game. When we get to 3-0 they can come off it a bit
more.
"In terms of aggression we just weren’t angry enough in our
mentality and when we had the ball we lacked a lot of quality.
Disappointing performance and a disappointing result.
"We kept going. The spirit was there. One thing I’ve learned in 300
games in charge is you need a strong attitude in the Premier League.
You need organisation and commitment when you don't have the ball
and courage and aggression when you have it. We didn’t have any of
that.
"We have to go again. The team have gone it a number of times. We’ll
get in tomorrow, analyse it and get ready for Friday."
About the absent James Maddison, linked with a move to Tyneside and
pictured watching the game from the main stand:
"Sadly he is not near to playing yet - he was out to the grass this
morning, but he was still feeling pain in his knee. I'll speak to the medical team in the morning and see what the
timeline on it might be.
"It's a different part of a knee, he has had it around the back of
the knee, now he is feeling it around the front part. I need to
listen to experts and the medical people on this and take it from
there.
"This has come indirectly from maybe having issues while he was
away, he is just feeling something on the front of his knee that the
medics are just trying to get to the bottom of."

Newcastle's
march up the Premier League continued at the King Power Stadium on Monday
afternoon, a magnificent and thoroughly deserved three-goal success elevating them to a
staggering second in the table.
First half efforts from Chris Wood, Miggy Almiron and Joelinton
propelled United to their first Boxing Day win since 2013, as they
made it six league victories on the bounce - three of them on the
road.
Any thoughts that Eddie Howe's side would ease themselves back into
Premier League action following their 43 day World Cup decreed break
were dispelled just 90
seconds from the first whistle.
At that point United's pressing paid an instant
dividend as City were caught out on the edge of their box, Daniel Amartey
illegally preventing Joelinton's surge towards goal and
conceding a penalty.
Starting the game in place of the unwell Callum Wilson, Wood stepped
up to beat Danny Ward and set United on their way.
1-0 became 2-0 in the seventh minute after Almiron added another
memorable effort to his seasonal tally, exchanging passes with Bruno
Guimaraes before waltzing into the Foxes box and stroking home.

the unchecked Joelinton after the half hour; low-level celebrations
from visiting players leading to hesitation in the away section at
the other end of the ground until it became apparent that the goal
stood.
(Three minutes of first half added time would doubtless have
been far longer had our three goals come in the vicinity of the
away sections).
There was to be no more scoring in the remainder of the game -
Wood volleying just over and Bruno curling his attempt at Ward.
The second period then concluded with United registering an
impressive eighth clean sheet in 16 outings, thanks to their game management
skills.
Home substitute Jamie Vardy was denied by Nick Pope and the upright
before an offside flag was raised, as the hosts belatedly began to
spend time in the opposition half.
Sven Botman survived a VAR penalty check for handball while referee Jarred
Gillett was consistently inconsistent in his judgement of what
constituted a foul, seemingly rethinking his approach at half
time after having downed tools for a time and let everything go.
That approach caught out players from both sides, tumbling over
under contact in the expectation of a whistle that never came.
Although Leicester did see more of the ball after changing ends, there was never any
danger of a comeback from Brendan Rodgers' side and
disillusioned home followers were flocking to the exits just
after the hour mark, having sat mute all game.
That was in stark contrast to the 3,300 jubilant travelling
fans, who had hollered their approval throughout the afternoon.
What are becoming familiar scenes of exultant celebrations on
foreign turf followed the full time whistle, players and staff
saluting the euphoric away contingent - some of whom squabbled
over the shirts that were tossed in their direction.
Victory took Newcastle (played 16) one point above Manchester
City (played 14) into second and put them seven points off
leaders Arsenal (played 15), after the Gunners beat West Ham 3-1
soon after.
With one game left in 2022, a single defeat from 16 PL games matches
our record at the same point of the 1995/96 season.
Depending on your vintage, that's either uncharted territory as a
Toon follower or a pleasurable reminder of times past when we had
hopes and dreams rather than mere delusions of mediocrity.
Discounting the lockdown victory behind closed doors, two of our
darkest days of recent times came at this venue, in the form of 0-5 and 0-4
reverses.
Both of those humiliations were to a memorable background of vocal
and stoic support in one corner of the ground. Today though, those songs were ones of celebration - from defiance to
delight.
What a team, what a season.
