Half
time:

67 mins: A
combination of passes from Joelinton, Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Sean
Longstaff worked the ball across the field from the left flank to the
opposite touchline some 25 yards from the Leazes goal.
Kieran Trippier took possession and pushed the ball forward to Miggy Almiron
as Jaidon Anthony sought to close him down. Miggy's run away from goal
wasn't closely tracked by Jordan Zemura and he laid it off to Trippier, who
wrapped his right foot round the ball to send over a first-time cross as he
pushed on towards the corner flag.
Curling away from goal and dropping on the edge of the six yard area towards
the back post, the cross evaded Bournemouth's Chris Mepham but reached
fellow defender Adam Smith. He leapt higher than the adjacent Callum
Wilson but headed
it straight into the net from about four yards out, with Marcos Senesi
making a failed attempt to hook the ball off the
line. 1-0

Eddie Howe said:
"I didn't think we were at our fluent best today but I don't think we
were ever going to be because of the build-up to the game.
"Bournemouth made it difficult for us, they were very deep and compact and,
to a certain extent we played into their hands but part of the reason we
struggled to break them down was simply due to not playing together for a
while. We know there’s a lot more to come from our team.
"We just want to try and win every game. I think the players have shown that
attitude and delivered it really well this season. (We're) into the
quarter finals - which is a great thing for us - and we want to keep going.
"Sven Botman was excellent tonight, I thought that was his best game
aerially. He was dominant against their strikers. His use of the ball this
season has been excellent but he's also come on a lot in other areas. It was
a good night for him - and us."
Gary O'Neil said:
"We came, we gave our best and you go out of the Carabao Cup against a top
side that are obviously taking the competition very, very seriously with the
team they name and the subs they made.
"Newcastle away in the Carabao Cup with the
form they're in was never going to be an easy draw. The boys gave a real
account of themselves. I asked them to make sure we're competitive in every
game and make sure it looks like us, and even though they've had a tough
week, we were that.
"I thought we had some good spells - I thought we had some nice moments
where we played. We had some nice moments where we went direct into Kieffer
(Moore).
"I didn't feel like Kieffer or Dom (Solanke) got
much help from the ref, to be honest. Newcastle were clever with nudges in
the back...Dom's got a nasty stamp on his foot and one in the first half.
"Of course, away to Newcastle, you don't expect to be
the dominant force, but I felt we carried a threat. I thought there was
always something there that kept Newcastle honest and made sure we knew we
could hurt them with what we'd set up.
Just disappointed we didn't manage to make one of the
moments count, really. Some nice moments in the first half from Jaidon
Anthony. Kieffer's header, he scores more of them than he misses, generally.
I thought Dom's was in at the end. So, some good moments and good
opportunities to score."
"We were competitive and, in my opinion, unlucky not to
take the game further. I think I would have liked to have had more of the
players available (a virus in the squad had reportedly disrupted
Bournemouth's preparations). I thought they showed the game plan very,
very well.
"Obviously, as it always is in a game of football,
there are things you would like to improve. First half, when we won the ball
back, we missed a good opportunity on a couple of occasions to make sure we
secure the first pass.
"Couple of opportunities to counter attack, but we
missed that first one. But yeah, we stuck at it. Well organised, well
disciplined and carried a threat. I was pleased."
United are now unbeaten in 12
league and cup games and have lost just once in their last 20 competitive
outings, 18 of which came this season.
The Magpies are unbeaten in their last 11 league and cup fixtures at SJP.
Newcastle posted
their fifth successive clean sheet at SJP in league and cup; this 1-0 success following a 1-0 win over Chelsea, 0-0
League Cup draw with Palace, 4-0 defeat of Aston Villa and single goal
conquest of Everton.
Excluding the Palace penalty shootout, the last player to score past Nick Pope
was Brentford's Ivan Toney, 486 minutes ago.
The last opposition player to net against Newcastle in the first half
of a league or cup game was Ruben Neves of Wolves at Molineux in August
(38 minutes). In the 13 subsequent games, the seven goals conceded all
came after the half time interval.
United found the net in the 67th minute of play for the second
successive game and the fourth time this season -
all those goals coming at SJP:
Alexander
Isak v Bournemouth PL (Gallowgate)
Miguel
Almiron v Villa PL (Gallowgate)
Joe
Willock v Chelsea PL (Gallowgate)
OG v Bournemouth LC (Leazes)
This was the second meeting of these two sides in this competition,
following a 1-2 defeat for Newcastle at Dean Court back in 1963. The
hosts were then known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic.

Following a 38 day lull in
competitive club games, United made a winning return to action on Tuesday
night, advancing to the Quarter Finals of the Carabao Cup after beating
Premier League opposition at Gallowgate.
The winning goal was scored by a player signed during Eddie Howe's reign;
but that was when he was in charge of Bournemouth rather than Newcastle....
Visiting defender Adam Smith was
under no more than mild
pressure from Callum Wilson when heading Kieran Trippier's right wing centre
past his own 'keeper midway through the second half.
That miscue saved the blushes of Miggy Almiron who had spurned a glaring
chance in the
first half, inexplicably scuffing the ball across goal when Dan Burn's cross
from the left found him at the back post.
Wilson had already netted by then but that 27th minute effort was ruled out by the onfield
officials in the absence of VAR, deciding that Joe Willock was offside and
interfering with play, despite Wilson legitimately taking the ball and
finishing smartly at the Gallowgate End.
That belated decision came following protests from visiting players directed at the
referee and linesman and had the effect of firing up crowd and team for a
time - Wilson narrowly heading over from United's next attack.
Rarely seen as an attacking force all night, Bournemouth wasted one excellent chance
straight after the break when striker Kieffer Moore
headed the ball narrowly wide from eight yards out.
Having forced a draw here three months ago in the league, the visitors were
again able to contain United for three quarters of the contest but the
arrival of Allan Saint-Maximin - unavailable for the last meeting - would
prove key.
Although not involved in what proved to be the winning goal, the Frenchman
provided a threat down the left that had been largely absent and raised the
noise levels around the ground, before bringing some much-needed pace to the
home side's attacking efforts.
It took a VAR-dictated penalty to get past a compact Cherries side here last
time and that fortunate OG did the damage here tonight when the outcome was
all that really mattered.
One goal always looked likely to settle it, but a succession of replacements
did look to knock United out of their stride in the closing stages in
similar fashion to the changes that preceded conceding late on at Fulham and
Southampton.
Nick Pope had to make a couple of late stops to prevent the tie going to
penalties but five minutes of added time passed without major incident
before a place in the last eight was bagged: justification for the strong
selection from Eddie Howe that underscored his pledge to take the cups
seriously. The only change to the starting XI that beat Chelsea tonight was
Wilson in for Wood.
All five current Magpies on World Cup duty started; Fabian Schar
celebrating his 31st birthday by taking an early blow to the face but
playing on and coming close to scoring on two occasions. That they all came
back unscathed and with minimal and partial involvement has to be a double
positive; our number 39 has a point to prove and a new national team coach
to impress....
And while there was some rustiness and sloppy passing, those involved will
benefit from tonight's exertions, upping the ante from Saturday's kickabout
before the Boxing Day visit to Leicester.
A brief chorus of "tell me ma..." broke out following the goal
and one attention-seeker later posted his London hotel booking for
February online. Having won just one of our previous nine League Cup Quarter Final appearances
though, we'll wait to see what the draw is before beginning to dream of Wembley...
