The Seahorses are now unbeaten in their last 20 league and cup games -
having preserved that record by drawing in the FA Vase and then losing
on penalties, only to be reinstated after the opposition were
disqualified for a rule infringement.
The U21s began and ended their
Northumberland Senior Cup campaign on Wednesday with defeat at
Northern League First Division side Whitley Bay.
Two first half goals gave the hosts a decisive advantage; Lewis Orrell's 20th minute
opener a shot that beat the
unsighted Max Thompson. Thompson had earlier punched clear to deny
former Magpie Josh Gilchrist.
Andrei Ardelean then got the final touch in the 31st minute after Harvey Neary
had jinked into the box and tested Thompson, who could only parry
that shot onto Ardelean's chest and into the net.
The visitors got one back in the 72nd minute when Amadou Diallo's shot was
blocked by Pat Nash and Michael Ndiweni tapped home the rebound.
In the 81st minute a miscued cross from Diallo almost caught out Nash
in the home goal, but the 'keeper scrambled it behind for a corner.
With the young Magpies pushing forward in the final minute for an
equaliser, Bay broke and substitute Malcolm Morien's speculative shot
flew in off the post to seal the victory for the Seahorses.
The tie concluded with Bay bringing on
substitute goalkeeper Dan
Lister in an outfield role, replacing defender Ben Richardson.
Many thanks to GW.
