Attempting to extend a six game unbeaten record in PL2, Newcastle's
U21 side faced table toppers Leeds United at Thorp Arch on Monday
afternoon.
However they ended up succumbing to the striking prowess of Max
Dean, who helped himself to a second half treble for the hosts.
Leeds went ahead inside the first minute when Kris Moore headed home
a right wing centre from Charlie Allen.
Josh Scott then drew the Magpies level in the seventh minute, the
midfielder calmly stroking a shot home to make it four goals in eight
PL2 games.
Back came Leeds and they finished the first half strongly, visiting
goalkeeper Jude Smith equal to a powerful free kick from Morten
Spencer on 40 minutes then denying Moore his second of the game from
the resultant corner.
Newcastle then had a great opportunity of their own in the 43rd
minute; Jamie Miley playing in Isaac Westendorf who tried to square
the ball and saw it strike a home player before going agonisingly
wide of the goal.
The hosts were quickly into their stride after the resumption,
striker Max Dean shooting past Smith in the 49th and 51st minutes to
put Leeds 3-1 ahead.
The Magpies responded in the 63rd minute; Harry Barclay exchanging
passes with Scott before converting a low drive to register his
first competitive reserve goal.
Leeds restored their two goal advantage when 18 year-old Dean defied
the offside trap to complete his 19 minute treble midway through the
second period.
There was no more scoring in the game, which for Newcastle marks the
mid-point in their 20 game PL2 season, which now pauses until January
2023.
They arrive there having taken 14 points from 10 games to sit fifth
in the final playoff position; 11 points behind leaders Leeds, who
have played a game less and dropped just two points to date.
Six Premier League Cup ties and one Northumberland Senior Cup tie
will now occupy Elliott Dickman's Magpies until their usual festive
break.
