Miggy Almiron received the ball from
Kieran Trippier towards the right hand touchline in
his own half, haring forward to collect the return when it arrived
via Sean Longstaff's pass and Callum Wilson's neat layoff.
Charging into the
home box towards the away contingent, Almiron kept his composure and
wriggled round Ainsley Maitland-Niles rather than squaring the ball
to Jacob Murphy and netted his eighth of the season.

Eddie Howe:
"When
you look at today's performance, it was below from where have been, but
we still won 4-1. I'm very pleased with the result. The performance
wasn't our best, but I'm not going to pick it to pieces.
"It was a tough game for us. Southampton dropped into the
bottom three yesterday, so we knew they would show a reaction.
We were not at our best, but we scored four wonderful goals.
"It feels a little flat, because we didn't hit the heights
which we have in other weeks, but we were clinical when we
needed to be.
"I think it’s important in
our position now that we do think back because last year we were in
a really difficult position and it’s quickly forgotten so I’ve
really encouraged the players to enjoy this moment and really try
and soak up what they’re achieving.
"It’s helpful to think back, to not get complacent or overreact, but
to know how quickly football can change. We have to be very
conscious of that fact and keep working hard.
"We scored some very good
goals today and that was the highlight because the rest of our
performance wasn't as good as it has been in recent weeks. Very
pleased with the attitude because to come here and win is very
difficult.”
On Kieran Trippier:
"He's OK. He had treatment towards the end of the first half, but we
decided to replace him at 3-0 just to protect him.”
On Callum Wilson:
"Callum wasn't that well in the week and felt light-headed and dizzy
so that's why he came off. It was a joint decision, he didn't feel he had the energy needed
and it was easy decision to replace him with Chris
(Wood).”
On Chris Wood:
"Really pleased. It's so important that everybody is ready to play
and Chris, due to Callum's illness, came on. I had no hesitation -
he was outstanding for us last year, and his opportunities have been
limited this year. But, what a finish."
On Miguel Almiron:
"I think that was one of his best performances, I thought his energy
and his running was evident - his finish was clinical.
"I was really pleased with him today and it adds to his high number of
quality goals that he's scored for us."
Ralph Hasenhuttl said:
"Four-one down and Newcastle showed why they are where
they are, and we showed why we are where we are. This is the
difference.
"If you hit the corner or if you hit the side of the goal, we have
again chances to score, but we have also given them only four shots
on target and they scored four times. If you want to have the answer
to what was the difference, you see this.
"Goals you score always make a difference in the result
and when you score it’s not really enough and the game is gone.
We are under the line and we are, in the moment, in a very
difficult situation.....it’s not a good view at the moment when
you look at the table."
About his future:
"I have made a lot of decisions in my time here. Thankfully, I
don't have to make that decision. I cannot say the effort wasn't there, but at the moment we are not
taking the reward for the effort on the pitch.
"I think being in the relegation zone is a reflection of what we've
done so far. It has not been good enough."
He was sacked less than 24 hours later.
In 54 league and cup visits to their various home grounds
since 1898, this is the first time that Newcastle have netted
four times away at Southampton.
United have lost just
one of their last six visits to St. Mary's and have now won successive away games
against
Southampton for the first time. The Saints have now beaten the
Magpies just once in the last eleven home and
away meetings of the two clubs.
Jonjo Shelvey reached 200 senior appearances in
League and
Cup for Newcastle - reportedly triggering an automatic contract extension.
Fabian
Schar made his 100th start and Callum Wilson his
50th start for the Magpies
(both in all competitions).
Javier Manquillo made
his first appearance of the season, coming off the bench. He's the
24th player to feature for us in the PL so far, with Loris Karius,
Karl Darlow and Paul Dummett in the current PL squad but yet to kick
a ball in that competition thus far.
Darlow returned to the bench after recovering from an ankle
injury, with Karius dropping out of the squad as a consequence.
Miguel Almiron maintained his position as United's current
top scorer with eight PL goals, equalling Callum Wilson's golden
boot total of 2021/22.
His feat of scoring in four successive PL appearances has
been achieved before by the likes of Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and
Alan Shearer, but Almiron is only the second overseas-born player after Papiss Cisse to do so.
Miggy moves on to 17 PL goals, a total he shares with Yohan
Cabaye. His next target in the club's all-time PL goal chart is
Laurent Robert on 22.
A measure of his new-found potency comes from learning that
Almiron's current run of seven goals in seven games compares
to the seven goals in 76 games that it took him to
reach that figure before that.
Chris Wood netted his second goal of the season following the
winner at Tranmere Rovers in the League Cup. This was his third PL
strike as a Magpie, the second of which was at the same end of
St.Mary's last season.
Joe Willock broke his seasonal duck with an eleventh PL goal
for United, putting him level in that competition with team mates
Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey. He'd endured a 21 game barren spell
since his last goal, away at Brentford in February 2022.
Bruno Guimaraes now has eight PL goals to his name,
three of which have come this season. That puts him one ahead of
current Magpie Matt Ritchie and one behind Jamaal Lascelles.
For the second successive PL game, Newcastle netted four goals or
more - something they have already done once this season (Fulham
away 4-1 followed by Brentford home 5-1). Previous to that, the
black and whites hadn't managed that since September 2001 (Boro away
4-1 followed by Manchester United home 4-3).
Newcastle still possess the tightest defence in the Premier League
with 11 goals conceded from 14 games, but after conceding
late on here they now share that accolade with Arsenal, who have
played a game less.
Just two of those 11goals were conceded before half time: Ilkay
Gundogan (Manchester City 5 mins) and Ruben Neves (Wolves 38 mins).
After the opening seven away games of the season, United's tally of
12 points from three wins and three draws is three more than the entire
2015/16 campaign. Their haul of 12 goals matches the total
they reached that season in all 19 matches away from SJP.
Another successful outing for the blue and gold change
strip, now worn for away victories at Tranmere Rovers, Fulham, Spurs and
Southampton.

Eddie Howe's side celebrated
the first
anniversary of his taking charge of them two days early on Sunday,
ruthlessly dispatching a Saints side - and their head coach, who was
sacked
Twelve months to the day that Newcastle struggled to a point along
the coast with manager-elect Howe watching from the stand, they
emphatically collected three points to leave them third in the
table.
A fourth successive win that lengthened United's unbeaten run to nine
games began with a fourth goal in as many games from Miggy Almiron
that gained a half time lead.
And as sunshine gave way to rain, last season's St.Mary's scorers Chris
Wood and Bruno Guimaraes repeated their feats, book-ending Joe
Willock's first of the season.
Victory was ultimately achieved at a canter despite the absence of
Joelinton through suspension and the loss of Callum Wilson at the break
due to illness.
Kieran Trippier and Almiron were also substituted after receiving
treatment, although both replacements thankfully appeared
precautionary.
Miggy's 35th minute opener saw him receive the ball from Trippier in
his own half, haring forward to collect the return when it arrived
via Sean Longstaff's pass and Callum Wilson's neat layoff.
Charging into the box towards the away contingent, Almiron kept his composure and
wriggled round Ainsley Maitland-Niles rather than squaring the ball
to Jacob Murphy and stroked home his eighth of the season.
Miggy's proximity to the target meant that Gavin Bazunu had little
chance of preventing the goal, but the bright sunshine that had seen
away fans behind his goal squinting and shading their eyes rather
surprisingly hadn't caused the home 'keeper to don a hat.
The Saints should have gone marching in level at the break, but
Stuart Armstrong's tempting cross from the right two minutes into
time added on was blasted past the back post by Mohamed Elyounoussi
when it seemed harder to miss.
Southampton continued to threaten after the restart and after a few
half-chances, a rare misplaced pass from Sven Botman to prompt a
home attack ended with Che Adams thumping his volley wide.
That miss came on 56 minutes and within two minutes the ball was in
the net at the other end of the ground; approach work from Willock
and Murphy giving Wood the opportunity to swivel and steer his low
shot home.
Celebrations were still in full flow behind Nick Pope's goal just
four minutes later, when a razor-sharp counter-attack from United
opened up a three goal lead.
Players from both sides lay sprawled out on the turf outside the
Newcastle area as Bruno cleared his lines and Trippier beat his
opponent to the ball on halfway. He then played a superb pass for Willock to
outpace a posse of defenders and poke past the advancing Gavin Bazunu.
As had been the case at Fulham, a late defensive reshuffle cost
United their clean sheet when Romain Perraud found himself unmarked
on the left side of our box in possession and eluded Dan Burn's
last-ditch lunge before scooping the ball into the net.
Those home fans still in their places greeted that with the minimum
of applause, but were soon grumbling again after United grabbed a
fourth goal.
Jonjo Shelvey's short free kick deep in the Saints half was knocked
to Bruno and the Brazilian exchanged passes with Allan Saint-Maximin
before his right-footer from outside the box bounced in front of the
shell-shocked Bazunu and into the net.
The final whistle moments later was greeted by the now-familiar scenes of
celebration on and off the pitch, those who made light of yet more travel
complications staying on to salute another memorable effort from the
players and coaches, who in turn applauded them.
Southampton's official website accurately described the visitors as
rampant, resurgent and clinical but this was a less disciplined and more error-strewn display than at
Spurs. Our predatory attacking instincts
were more evident than in N17 though, as a second successive
four goal catch was landed.
Victory took Newcastle to 27 points, up one place into third,
staying there when Liverpool won at Spurs in the late game.
Manchester United's defeat at Aston
Villa meanwhile guarantees our top four spot through the World Cup
break, regardless of the outcome when Chelsea visit Tyneside on
Saturday.
It's all a far cry from 12 months ago, when United kicked off at the
Amex with results elsewhere leaving them at rock bottom.
90 grim minutes later, they had their fifth point of the season from
their eleventh game, leading us to comment that Howe could have been
forgiven for leaving at half time, having seen first-hand the task
that awaited him.
It's to his credit and our benefit that he chose to sign up, but
even Eddie must be pinching himself when assessing the pace and
scale of the transformation that has taken place under his guidance.
