Joe Willock cut in from the United left and when his pass was intercepted
by Douglas Luiz he won the ball back, allowing Callum Wilson to pick out the unmarked Miggy
Almiron in the Leazes End box.
Almiron's goalbound shot hit Ashley Young's upper arm and referee
Paul Tierney immediately awarded a penalty kick. Callum Wilson struck a firm shot down
the centre while Robin Olsen dived to his right.

56 mins
A
neatly-worked corner routine from Kieran Trippier and
Miggy saw Almiron back-heel to Trippier and he crossed from the right for
Callum Wilson to nod in at
the back post. The celebrations were briefly delayed until an offside claim
was rebuffed by VAR. The stadium big screen helpfully confirming
that decision some time after Villa had kicked off....
2-0
59 mins
United broke forward with a four against three and although
Willock's ball to Joelinton was cut out, it fell for Wilson to shoot from
just inside the area. Olsen
saved low to his left and denied the Magpie a hat-trick, only for Joelinton to appear and knock in the rebound
from six yards out.
Once again Villa claims of an offside weren't upheld and the joyous scenes weren't interrupted. 3-0
67 mins
Wilson's ball to Miguel Almiron on the right was a little short of pace but
the Paraguayan cut inside and took a touch before arcing in a marvellous 20 yard
finish that gave Olsen no chance and the celebrations by the corner flag
were again lengthy and exuberant.

Eddie
Howe said:
"First-half was a difficult half for us, because it was
stop-start, we couldn’t get any rhythm. Aston Villa are very competitive.
Teams will come here and try and disrupt us in different ways, and I felt
they did. We struggled to build consistent pressure.
"The first goal’s so important in any game – and today we got it, probably
from our best move of the half. The second half was totally different,
that’s the football and the style that we want to see on a consistent basis
here.
"I stood back and enjoyed the second-half. I thought we were really
good.
"We know where we are and
what we are in the middle of. It's a very busy time. It was an
outstanding performance and we scored some great goals.
"We showed good energy in the
second half and the goals made the difference. It was very bitty first half,
stop-start, we never got into a rhythm really because the game
didn't allow us to do it.
"We were outstanding in the
second half, up there with one of the best performances of the
season, free-flowing football, attacking football and a great
performance.
"I'm really pleased for Callum (Wilson),
the second goal was a typical goalscorer's goal and penalties are
never easy. He was at the heart of a lot of our good play today.
"It was an outstanding finish
from (Miguel) Almiron, he used the defender's body to curl it round the
goalkeeper, it was a pinpoint goal. I’m running out of words to
describe Miggy’s goals, They’re all so good.
"You want the supporters to
enjoy the moment and they will. They were outstanding today, they
really did help us, and I hope they enjoy tonight and express
themselves.
"For me and the players, we just need to be more controlled and look
to next week."
Departing caretaker boss Aaron Danks said:
"It's really disappointing today. The first half was an even contest, we
created some chances and they had some moments as well.
"The penalty gave them some belief, and we had to go in and find a way of
attacking the second half. We tried to tweak one or two things, but they had
a really good spell of momentum where they punished us.
"There's lots of sombre heads in the dressing room, so there's nothing we
can do but pick ourselves up and get ready for next week.
"I'll always look back as the goals as a coach, they've scored a fantastic
finish from distance, but you look at the distances between our team and
think we're a bit too open there.
"Newcastle were intelligent in the way they
positioned their players. There were little tactical moments that hurt us.
Of course, there's things we could've done
better - but you come to a place like St James' Park, a team that's flying,
you know some of the game they'll have momentum and you just have to find a
way to stay in the game, but unfortunately it got away from us.
"The league is ruthless and can punish you when you are not having good
moments. The penalty was right decision. We knew they would have a spell of
momentum and they were ruthless. The scoreline looks big and it hurts, but
that is what the league can do."
On goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez:
"I haven't had a chance to catch up with the doctor yet. Emi is up, he is
talking and is showered and changed. I'm not too sure. He is fine."
The
Magpies extended their unbeaten home record from the start of the season
to seven Premier League games (won four, drawn three). That's
their best run since 1995/96 when they racked up 13 successive
victories.
Since Eddie Howe took over
almost a year ago, United have lost just two of their 21 PL
games at SJP (won 12, drawn six).
24 points from their opening 13 games is the fifth-highest tally
Newcastle have posted in the Premier League:
1995/96 (34 points, finished second with 78 points)
1994/95 (32 points,
finished sixth with 72 points)*
1996/97 (28 points, finished second with 68 points)
2011/12 (26 points, finished fifth with 65 points)
2022/23 (24 points)
* 42 game season
Miggy Almiron maintained his position as our leading PL
scorer this season with seven. Coming after strikes against
Brentford and Everton, he's the first Magpie
to score in three successive PL home games since Yoan Gouffran in
2013. The Frenchman then extended that sequence to five games.
Almiron's current total of seven PL goals would have made him United's
top scorer in four previous entire seasons: 1997/98 (John Barnes with
six), 2000/01 (Carl Cort and Nolberto Solano both with six) and 2019/20
(Jonjo Shelvey with six).
A brace from Callum Wilson
meanwhile
took him to six for the season. Today was the sixth
time that he'd scored two goals in a game for United, but
he's yet to go and claim a third to complete his hat trick.
26 PL goals for Newcastle sees Wilson draw level with Michael Owen in
our all-time scoring chart for that competition, one behind Craig
Bellamy and two off Obafemi Martins.
His goals have come against 12 different sides:
Burnley 5 (2 penalties)
Everton 4 (1 penalty)
Spurs 3 (1 penalty)
Aston Villa 2 (1 penalty)
Crystal Palace 2
Fulham 2 (1 penalty)
Leicester City 2
West Ham 2
Manchester City 1
Norwich City 1 (1 penalty)
Nottingham Forest 1
Southampton 1
(Wilson's eighth successful penalty conversion came almost two years
to the day after he beat the same goalkeeper - Robin Olsen - to record
his third. The Swede was making his debut for Everton and dived right as
Wilson sent his spot kick down the middle at the Gallowgate End. Two
years on and history repeated itself as Olsen played his second Villa
game - and the first since turning his loan move into a permanent
transfer last summer.)
Joelinton broke his duck for the season with a first goal since
his brace away at Norwich last April.
His fifth yellow card
of the season means that he'll serve a one
match ban when United travel to Southampton on Sunday.
His goal was the 1,400th scored by Newcastle in the Premier
League, coming in the 1047th game. Miggy Almiron had scored the 1,300th,
at home to West Bromwich Albion in December 2020.
Victory over Villa saw United break the 900 point barrier at SJP
in the PL. They now have 902 from 524 games (won 257, drawn 131, lost
136).

Saturday afternoon saw two
new banners debut at St. James' Park, "This city is believing again"
at one end and "Eddie Howe's black & white army" across the
other.
After 104 minutes of one-sided action, jubilant home fans could be
forgiven for unfurling another one that read "Sob in Level 7" -
although there were precious few Villans there to see it
after their side were well and truly routed.
This was a game of two halves, but the visitors played no active part in
either of them. Instead, a trio of sizeable breaks in play for Villa
players to receive medical attention resulted in 10 minutes of time added to
the opening period, during which United regained their scoring touch.
Following a bright opening when both Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff
had efforts just off target, that succession of interruptions to play
prevented United from getting into their stride; Miguel Almiron's 44th
minute effort our first accurate effort of note.
That shot was blocked by replacement goalkeeper Robin Olsen, who had
come on for concussion victim Emiliano Martinez midway through the opening half - some
time after he'd had a whack on the head from a team mate.
Six minutes into added time though, Olsen was helpless to prevent Wilson
hammering home a penalty kick that referee Paul Tierney awarded after
Almiron's goalbound shot hit Ashley Young's upper arm.
Wilson had the ball in the net again almost immediately only for it to
be disallowed for offside, but the number 9 supplied his and our second
goal 11 minutes after the resumption.
That followed a neatly-worked corner routine from Kieran Trippier and
Miggy that saw the former cross from the right for Wilson to nod in at
the back post - the celebrations briefly delayed until an offside claim
was rebuffed by VAR.
The floodgates then opened for United as they attacked Villa at will,
urged on by a joyful home support.
Within three minutes Olsen had denied Wilson a hat-trick, only for
Joelinton to appear and knock in the rebound.
The roof nearly came off the Gallowgate End eight minutes later, when
Almiron continued his own personal scoring competition (ghoul of the
month?) with another absolute peach - arcing in a marvellous 20 yard
finish.
Further goals looked likely as Wilson twice came close to completing his
first treble: cannoning one header off the crossbar then just failing to
connect with Jacob Murphy's low ball across the face of goal.
In between, Murphy himself worked a shooting opening
in the box, cannoning his effort off the far post in the 77th minute
with Olsen stranded.
A succession of home substitutions inevitable saw United lose momentum;
one glorious late chance spurned by Chris Wood that would have been
surely put away by Wilson. There was even a cameo by Allan Saint-Maximin
following his three game absence.
This was Villa's fifteenth
consecutive failure to win here
and seldom can they have made less of an impression on a game, managing
no shots on or off target and no corners - Everton were equally shot-shy
in the previous home game.
Incoming manager Unai Emery's
first job will be re-watch this and it won't
make for pleasant viewing, with his new side lucky to only lose by four.
By contrast though, the alleged second choice for the Newcastle
job a year ago will doubtless derive some satisfaction from tuning in to
another praiseworthy display - although noting some slackness in
possession during the first half.
Howe admitted to journalists this week that he usually watches
highlights with the sound turned off, but if he makes an exception this
week then he'll hear
mass choruses of "you laughed at us when we
went down; who the f*** is laughing now!" echoing around the stadium
as the goals flew in. This was glorious.
Some stats to end with: 13 games played, six wins, six draws, one
defeat. 24 goals scored, ten conceded. Unbeaten in eight games, three
wins in a row.
The outcome? A top four position retained for the first time in a
decade. Still early days of course, but what great days these are
turning out to be. This team are a joy to watch across the field.
