We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It was an incredible game. Two teams going at it trying to deliver.

"Barring a slow start - or maybe a 15-20 minute period in the middle of the first-half - the lads gave me everything. How we have not scored, I'll let you look back and decide.

"We are playing far better than we were at the end of last season when we were winning games. The good thing is we are creating chances in every area of our performance, we just need to take them.

"We should have more points. One win and a few draws that should be wins, but it is a long season. Performance levels are really good. I hope the football gods level it up and we get points maybe when we’re not playing so well."

On the disallowed goal:

"I disagree with the decision; I thought it should be a goal. I thought Joe was pushed. He is running in and is pushed into the keeper. I am not sure what Joe is supposed to do there. For me it is a perfectly good goal.

Without that push, there's no way Joe would have gone in with that force. So for me, it's not a foul, if anything, it's a penalty if it's not a goal.

"You hope it is not one of those days where you get caught by a sucker punch. I have to credit my players for not losing focus and discipline. In terms of effort and the team pulling together it has been really good."

On the absence of Wilson, Bruno & Maxi:

"I think if you take those players out of any team – real attacking players who can make a difference – then you’re going to notice it We have noticed it. We’ve missed them, but in saying that, I have to give a big compliment to the players that have played the three games in a week. I think they’ve been incredible."

On Alexander Isak:

"There were more presentable ones
(chances): everything we tried in and around the goal didn't work, even the one we did score.

"He will be disappointed to miss that because I think he would back himself to score and I'd certainly back him to score but he's gone for a certain type of finish but he didn't quite execute it right.

"I thought we starved him of with the ball a little bit and I desperately wanted him to try and get on the ball more, especially in the attacking third.

"It's just that he's had no training time with us. So he's been thrust right into action and I think he's done very well but there's a lot of improvement for us as a team to try and serve him."

On Elliot Anderson:

"I thought he was very bright: I brought him on on the left – I thought our midfield three were doing well at that moment in the game, I didn't want to disrupt their rhythm. I thought we had control of the game.

"Sometimes if you make a change to an area that's functioning well, you have have a negative effect so put him wide. But it's an area that he can play, and play very well, and certainly his chopping and turning in the box was very impressive.

"He put a couple of lovely balls in with his left foot, which we probably should have done better with, so I'm very pleased with Elliot.

"Again, he comes on, home game, pressure on him and he wants the ball in every moment, and that's a big positive to take.”

They Said

Patrick Vieira said:

"
Tough place to come: a big atmosphere and we needed to defend well as a team. We did it well and fully deserve the point.

"You’re looking at what they spent, their ambition, it’s going to be challenging for any team coming here to get something. They’re a really strong side and this is one team you can count on to play European football.

"This is one of my favourite grounds, to be honest with you. The atmosphere is one of the best in the country and that’s why they’re so strong at home. There is passion, there is love and any other team who comes here will find it really tough.

On defending in general and set pieces in particular:

"We knew they were going to be challenging. Look at the physical aspect and every set piece was a challenge. I believe we defended well in the first contact, were present for the second contact and of course you expect them to make chances because this is their strength.

"We work on set pieces because we knew we needed to improve that side of the game. Today we defended really well.

"The positive is not conceding goals. We came here with a good idea to defend well and I think we did it. It was a challenging place to come and perform. We had our momentum, we had our chances. We didn't score but overall I'm pleased with the point we take today.

"Vicente
(Guaita) was unbelievable today. He had an unbelievable game. He was really good in the air, he made some really good saves which allowed us to stay in the game.

"I'm happy with what we've been producing game after game, less with the number of points we have. We have built something that will give us hope to win football matches."

On the disallowed goal:

"After looking at the images after the game I think that was the right decision from the referee.
I think if there is not a Newcastle player then our goalkeeper would get the ball and that contact of course had a massive impact on the goal. That’s why I believed that was the right decision from the referee.”

One victory and two losses means that Newcastle are unbeaten after their opening three home league games of the season, something that haven't achieved since the 2012/13 season.

Eddie Howe's side have now lost just one of their last 13 PL home games - the most "fortress-like" that SJP has been in the top flight since the end of the 2010/11 and beginning of the 2011/12 seasons (1 loss in 15 games).

The conclusion of the 2011/12 and start of the 2012/13 campaigns also saw them reach the 13 game mark.

NUFC after six PL games - last 10 seasons:

2012/13 9 points, 9th
2013/14 7 points, 16th
2014/15 3 points, 19th
2015/16 2 points, 19th
2017/18 9 points, 9th
2018/19 2 points, 18th
2019/20 5 points, 17th
2020/21 8 points, 14th
2021/22 3 points, 17th
2022/23 7 points, 11th

Alexander Isak's failure to follow up a debut goal in midweek with one today means that no player has netted in their first and second PL appearances for the club since Les Ferdinand back in 1995.

A sixth competitive senior game for the club brought Elliot Anderson his home debut:

Jan 2021 Arsenal (a) FAC (9 minutes as sub)
Jan 2021 Arsenal (a) PL (3 minutes as sub)
Aug 2022 Tranmere Rovers (a) LC (started, 70 minutes)
Aug 2022 Wolves (a) PL (6 minutes as sub)
Aug 2022 Liverpool (a PL (6 minutes as sub)
Aug 2022 Crystal Palace (h) PL (20 minutes as sub)

Three clean sheets
for Nick Pope in his first six Premier League games as a Magpie is the joint-best start that any of our fourteen goalkeepers in that competition have made. He has emulated Martin Dubravka in 2018, Shay Given in 1997, Shaka Hislop in 1995 and Mike Hooper in 1993.

For the fourth time in seven days, VAR played a pivotal role in the outcome of a game involving Newcastle - and for the third time the verdict left Eddie Howe, his players and supporters angry and bewildered.

The system may have belatedly righted an obvious wrong to deny Wolves their second goal at Molineux on Sunday, but only after a clear tug on the shirt of Sean Longstaff in that same game was ignored by the officials.

Technology - or a dubious line on a screen - then robbed United of a 2-0 lead at Anfield on Wednesday, not to mention an inability to use a watch.

An even more glaring miscarriage of justice here saw a perfectly valid Magpies goal chalked off by a dodgy VAR call and the inexplicable rubber-stamping of that decision by the match referee.

51 goalless minutes had passed when Kieran Trippier's free kick from the United right was headed back across the Leazes goal by Sven Botman.

Arriving near the back post, Joe Willock was shoved by visiting defender Tyrick Mitchell and as the Newcastle man collided with goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, the ball bounced off the chest of Mitchell and into the goal.

As Willock and Guaita lay in the box requiring medical attention, it became apparent that the goal was being checked by VAR official for checking for a foul (our initial thoughts were that a harsh ruling was going to see a penalty awarded instead).

Mason's judgement call sent Michael Salisbury to the pitchside monitor and he unbelievably agreed that Willock was guilty and ruled out the goal. Those fans at that end of the ground were up in arms at the decision and a replay on the big screen above confirmed Mitchell to have been the villain of the piece, prompting a deafening chorus of boos.

To have the onfield official review footage that was unclear and then show an angle that was clear as day inside the ground is a catastrophic failure of a system that isn't getting refined. It's getting worse.

With neither Allan Saint-Maximin or Bruno Guimaraes risked, United's made two changes from the side beaten at Liverpool; Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn replaced by Fabian Schar and Botman.

Making his home debut, Alexander Isak had the chance to mark the occasion with a goal on 16 minutes - but after robbing Joachim Andersen in the centre circle and setting off for goal, he made a failed attempt to lob the 'keeper.

The two sides took it in turns to mount attacks in the opening stages of the game, but as the first half wore on United made further inroads into the visiting backline.

That culminated in a hectic goalmouth scramble in the 34th minute; when Longstaff's header was brilliantly denied by Guaita, Cheick Doucoure blocked Joelinton's follow-up from point-blank range and Botman's goalbound effort was deflected over the bar by Marc Guehi. Miggy Almiron then slammed his shot off a post two minutes later with Guaita rooted to the spot.

Following the scandal of the disallowed goal, United pushed on and the Paraguayan wastefully fired wide just before the hour.

Miggy lasted 70 minutes before making way for Jacob Murphy on the right and while he was his usual frustrating self, the arrival of Elliot Anderson in place of Ryan Fraser on the other flank added an extra dimension to our attacking efforts. The lad can play.

Further chances fell to Willock, Joelinton and Isak, but the vital breakthrough was to elude United - and at the other end, Nick Pope did well to deny substitute Odsonne Edouard with his feet late on.

Six games played in the Premier League then and although we've only lost once - and that in controversial circumstances - Howe's side have just that solitary opening day win to their name so far.

That though has to be taken in the context of an injury list that sees our record signing adjust to his new surroundings and colleagues in the starting XI, while deprived of proven assist providers alongside him.

And then of course there's that bloody VAR, feeding paranoia about an agenda but also creating a siege mentality on and off the field around these parts.

Seven points by September 3rd then, a total that it took us until November 30th to acquire last season. That is progress.
