Newcastle's U21 side lost their 100% record in pre-season at the fourth
time of asking on Monday, held to a draw by their Tangerine
counterparts.
The game was staged at the Saints Sport facility of St. Andrew's
University, with the home side taking a 15th minute lead after
their striker pipped goalkeeper Max Thompson to the ball and fired home.
That lead lasted for less than five minutes however, Santiago Munoz
weaving past several attempted challenges before finishing well from
inside the area.
Mexican youth international Munoz then tested the opposition goalkeeper
twice in the closing stages of the first half but the game remained
level at the interval.
An unkind penalty decision for what looked to be an unavoidable hand
ball gave the Magpies an opportunity to go ahead on 62 minutes, but
Dylan Stephenson's spot kick was straight at the 'keeper.
Dundee United regained the lead from close range when a deep cross from
the right was nudged home in the 70th minute.
Back came Elliot Dickman's side again though, Matty Bondswell's forward
foray on 80 minutes leaving him well-placed to finish when the ball fell
to him in the box.
Newcastle commence their what will be their ninth attempt to climb out
of PL2 Division Two against West Bromwich Albion on Monday teatime.
