"We also prevailed against Newcastle as a team and brought the thing home under pressure. It's also important for the group to have such an experience together. Of course, when we're fresher, we can play it even better.

FSV Mainz 05 will play the friendly against Newcastle United scheduled for Monday 18 July in Kufstein as part of the training camp. This decision was made by the club's management on Monday. Previously there were also talks between the agency Onside, the club's training camp partner, those responsible for Newcastle United and FSV.

Some Mainz fans, including the Supporters fan association, are calling for the test match to be cancelled due to the ownership structure of the "Magpies" with a Saudi Arabian consortium. The club wants to seek dialogue with the critical fan representatives.

"For us, a friendly against a traditional English club is first and foremost a sporting test of strength. This friendly is also particularly important for the preparation of the team. Sport director Christian Heidel says: "From a sporting perspective, we cannot do without this test match. A unilateral cancellation by us, as demanded by some fans, is unthinkable, as this could have serious legal and economic consequences for us and us due to the contractual obligations fundamentally stand by our contractual agreements."

Those responsible perceived a differentiated opinion within the club on the question of how to deal with the planned test match. Having overcome third tier German opposition on Friday, United wilted in even higher temperatures and lost their 100% pre-season record to Mainz at the third time of asking on Monday afternoon.

A highly dubious goal for the Bundesliga side decided a match which kicked off in 29C heat, Newcastle dominating play but leaving Austrian empty-handed, unable to add to their eight friendly strikes.

A small crowd comprising of Toon followers, curious locals and Mainz fans uninterested in joining a boycott were present at the Grenzlandstadion home of FC Kufstein, like Friday's hosts Pinzgau another Regional League side.

They saw the black and whites begin at a high tempo but gradually drop off the pace after a line-up spearheaded by Chris Wood created little of note against a defensively-minded opposition side.

The Kiwi skied an effort after a smart layback by Miggy Almiron and should have done better soon after when played in by Kieran Trippier.

Trippier then had a chance of his own from a free kick, but what looked like an on-target dead ball effort was deflected harmlessly over the bar.

At the other end, Stach's shot from a free-kick forced a saved out of Martin Dubravka - the closest either side came to a goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Paul Dummett had started but a scheduled change saw him make way for Matt Ritchie in the 31st minute - shortly after the first official drinks break (for the players that is, the FCK bars did brisk business all afternoon).

A mass arrival of substitutes on the hour prompted three quick goals against 1860 on Friday, but 10 changes failed to have the desired effect here.

Emile Krafth's tempting 66th minute cross from the right was missed by Jacob Murphy and it almost fell for Callum Wilson but was cleared.

Jonjo Shelvey then tried to find Wilson in the box, but he was unable to reach it and Elliot Anderson's routine shot from distance was saved. Anderson didn't look out of place here and while we await a further transfer breakthrough, he's an asset to the squad.

By contrast, Allan Saint-Maximin seemed more preoccupied with tweaking the bandages bizarrely covering both of his forearms than influencing proceedings - his best moment a pass to Shelvey that saw Jonjo fire a first-time effort over the bar.

The final chance for United fell to Wilson on 81 minutes but his powerful shot was at the 'keeper, who blocked with his head.

A disappointing outcome, but the result will be of little concern to Eddie Howe as his squad continued their preparations in conditions that were more arduous than the threat that their opponents caused.

Following a brief return to England and some time off, the players will then set off for a Portuguese training camp that includes two matches - one a training ground exercise behind closed doors against Burnley before a rather more high-profile meeting against Benfica.

As it stands, there looks to be little chance of any new faces in the squad in Lisbon - leaving a nagging doubt over our scoring ability and placing more emphasis on the fitness of Wilson and the flexibility and attitude of ASM. 

PS: some lax stewarding and over-excited locals (including the FCK ball boys) saw a post-match pitch invasion, but once things calmed down, Howe and players posed for photos with travelling Mags - who bided their time and were duly rewarded with some fine mementoes of their trip.
