We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"The first half was difficult as they were clearly trying to slow the game down which is their right. The referee didn't help us with that because we wanted the opposite.

"We wanted a quick game with a lot of running but it wasn't there in the first half - it was a dead game. We didn't really get what we wanted. I didn't think we helped ourselves with that I thought we were lethargic but certainly we have worked the players hard.

"We have been tested in different ways. We knew they were coming into the game today fatigued and it showed early on."

"That was always the plan (to alter the side after an hour). We didn't pick the players who we thought could play longer and we protected the players we thought needed it.

"Mostly the international boys who have had less training. The others, their performance was very good but the first 60 minutes we looked fatigued."

"We have definitely improved the group. But I do feel we have more work to do. I'm really pleased with the business we have done so far.

"Getting Matt
(Targett) back was a priority because he did so well for us last year. He is an outstanding player and an outstanding person and we have enjoyed working with him.

“Nick (Pope) has come in and there is real competition for the goal keeping place and he did very well today so I am pleased with that and Sven (Botman) is someone we chased for a long time.

On the transfer situation:

"There is nothing to report and we're still in the process of working very hard behind the scenes to try and improve the squad. That work is continuing every day, even from here. We are keen to add strength to certain areas of the team. It remains to be seen whether we can get a deal done.

“It is a difficult window, a difficult market, high prices and very limited availability. I'm sure we can hopefully land a player who can make a difference to us.

"It's not necessarily one area of the team. You have to be adaptable as if we can't find the right player. I might have to look at other positions. We are looking at quality players who will make the group better, regardless of position."

They Said

Michael Köllner said:

"We're very happy with the first half, we played well, even if we didn't pay any attention to today's game in training throughout the week.

"Now we're all looking forward to Dresden, that's the important thing, because it's all about points!

"For me, what happens in training during the week is crucial. We did well in the first half, but I'm assuming that one or the other will really step on the gas again next week and show himself to be on the pitch in Dresden on Saturday.

"We still had heavy legs. But for me it's not important that we achieve mega results in preparation.

"We need substance to hold out well until mid-November. That's more important to me than getting a better result in one or the other friendlies. On Saturday, no one is talking about the game today!

"With Marius Willsch and Daniel Wein we had the last convalescents on the field today. They did a really good job.

"Balls that feel like they are going wide in the 3rd league are still running. They're a lot faster. So it was a great test for us, in which we presented ourselves very well in the first half.”

Asked about whether the game should have taken place:

"
What was done around the game is not my construction site, period, that's it. The fact is: politics has to express itself on such topics, not sport. After all, I'm not playing with the Chancellor and putting the Prime Minister in the storm.

"Everyone has their role in society. We didn't play against a regime, but against a club that regularly participates in the Premier League. It was fun playing against them, that's all it was."

Number alterations and additions noted included Pope wearing 22 and Botman clad in 4. Trippier was clad in 2, while unused replacements Matty Longstaff sported 27 and Jay Turner-Cooke 62.

(announcing the line-up and numbers worn, the NUFC website did print a disclaimer that "squad numbers are subject to change").

It's been a busy week for 18 year-old midfielder Jay Turner-Cooke, who was on the first team bench against Gateshead last Saturday before flying out with the U21 squad for a Spanish training camp.

He then made his way to Austria for another non-playing substitute role and will remain with the seniors for Monday's game against Mainz. Jay made a positive impression when promoted by Eddie Howe in the latter part of last season and travelled with them to Manchester City in May although he didn't make the bench at the Etihad that day.

This was United's second Austrian visit of the modern era, following a bizarre kickabout against Fenerbahce in 2012. That was staged in Ritzing, over 200 miles to the east of today's location. Our report of that day is here.

Back in the days when 1860 were a top-flight club, Newcastle faced them in the Intertoto Cup in 2001. Goals from Nolberto Solano (2) and Aaron Hughes gave Sir Bobby Robson's side a 3-2 first level lead in the Olympic Stadium.

That was then followed up with a 3-1 success on Tyneside; Solano again on target along with Lomana LuaLua and Gary Speed.

Waffle

Second half strikes from Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes saw United ease to victory in their second warm-up game on Friday.

Around 250 Newcastle followers saw Sven Botman and Nick Pope make their bow against Bundesliga third tier opposition at the picturesque Austrian Saalfelden Arena Bürgerau.

A low-key opening 45 minutes yielded few scoring opportunities for either side; Pope equal to a 21st minute from Martin Kobylanski that brought shouts of "England's number 1" from the Toon enclave.

At the other end, Allan Saint-Maximin was in typical form - setting up Elliot Anderson, writhing around after a tackle, conceding a foul and ending a weaving run by firing hopelessly off target - all in the first 15 minutes.

Returning for the second half with only Botman in for Lascelles, the black and whites went ahead on 55 minutes when Joe Willock took Jonjo Shelvey's pass and slammed a rising shot into the net.

A mass round of replacements just after the hour saw Eddie Howe's side make 10 changes - resulting in a noticeable upping of the tempo.

Two of those replacements combined to double the advantage on 63 minutes; Sean Longstaff winning a free kick down the right and quick thinking from Bruno allowing Longstaff to hammer home from inside the area.

The scoring was rounded off 14 minutes from full time when Bruno neatly nutmegged an opponent and exchanged passes with Chris Wood before firing beyond Marco Hiller for 3-0.

Full time saw the the majority of Newcastle fans remain in their places on the terrace and they were rewarded for their support with a round of applause from Howe and the players. Some of the players then later mingled happily between the ground and team bus for autographs and selfies.

We'll resist the temptation to dissect ever last nuance of play, but Anderson has filled out more than when last we saw him, Shelvey looked almost skeletal and the elder Longstaff in good shape.

In performance terms, Bruno was as classy as ever, while Botman had little to do but had an early taste of partnering both Dan Burn and Fabian Schar - an injury to Lascelles seeing him introduced as the right-sided centre half before reverting to his more familiar left-sided berth after Schar came on.

It's almost four years since our last European pre-season jaunt, when a decent number of fans headed over to Porto and Braga.

It's almost impossible to conceive how much has changed since then inside and outside NUFC, but today was a welcome return to gloriously irrelevant treks to places we'll never set foot in again, catching up with familiar faces and downing a few beers - just to stay hydrated of course....

That's a damn sight better than Doncaster
