Monday evening saw Newcastle's U23 side in PL2 Division Two action, when they came from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion 4-3 in a breathless encounter at St. James' Park.

With five league games left, Elliott Dickman's side remain in contention for a promotion playoff place as they bid to end an eight season stay in the second flight.

The visitors went close in the 11th minute when a right wing cross was deflected onto the crossbar and went over. A few minutes later Dylan Stephenson volleyed a low left-wing cross narrowly over.

The Baggies took the lead in the 19th minute when a long ball caught out the home defence and when Jake Turner rushed out of his goal, Mo Faal got there first and slotted home.

United came close to equalising in the 35th minute when Stephenson headed a Jay Turner-Cooke cross over the bar.

The visitors doubled their lead three minutes before the break when a cross from the left was headed goalwards by Caleb Taylor and finished off by Jovan Malcolm.

West Brom should have got a third two minutes into the second half but Taylor's free header was straight at Turner.

That miss proved costly when the Magpies got one back in the 51st minute through Santiago Munoz, who headed home Joe Oliver's cross from the right for his first goal since joining the club.

A minute after a double substitution by the visitors, Niall Brookwell stooped to head in a right-sided Turner-Cooke corner to level the scores.

And United went in front in the 73rd minute when a left-wing corner ended up at the feet of Nathan Carlyon who converted for his maiden PL2 strike.

The Baggies equalised in the 86th minute when Jamie Andrews finished from close range, converting Tom Fellows' low centre from the right.

Newcastle weren't to be denied though and two minutes into added time, the ball was pulled back to Josh Scott who fired across the 'keeper into the far corner of the Gallowgate net to win the game 4-3.

Victory over the Baggies saw United rise from seventh to fourth; teams finishing second to fifth contest the playoffs for a second promotion place - champions Fulham already assured of the automatic one.
