Kyle Walker-Peters centred from the left flank, Mohamed Elyounoussi headed the ball
back across goal and Stuart Armstrong nodded it home via a
Dan Burn deflection in front of the away end.

The attack began with
Bruno well in his own half, producing an incisive forward pass to Murphy.
The ball progressed forward down the Newcastle left via messrs Shelvey,
Fraser and Targett before a layoff back to
Shelvey saw him swing an in-swinger to Chris Wood. He rose above Mohammed Salisu to beat SJP old boy Fraser Forster from
six yards out.

Matt Targett's corner from the United right was
headed across the six yard box by Dan Burn; Bruno Guimaraes standing with his back
to the goal and casually flicking the ball into the roof of the net.

Eddie Howe said:
"It’s
a really tough place to come, especially when you’re a goal down and
not playing at your best level. There were some really good individual performances among a team
performance that probably won’t rank as our best.
I have to say, I haven't seen
too much of that, back-heeling the ball in from that range. The goal was something we probably didn't expect from him but shows
his technical ability. He is going to be a huge player for us.
"I thought it was 'welcome to
the Premier League' for Bruno - an end-to-end game, high in
transitions and very physical. It will be a really good experience
for him.
"He's a defensive midfielder,
but a creative one. The reason we signed him was because we loved
his way of playing, his eye for a pass and composure."
"I’d like to see it (Bruno's
goal) again to properly see how good it was. I didn’t see how he
put it in. Until I see it with my own eyes, I won’t know how good it
is.
"It’s better than it was a few weeks ago (Newcastle's
league position). Nothing’s changed from before the game. We know
we still have some tough games and more work to do.
"We were very dogged and
determined and disciplined in our defensive shape. Martin (Dubravka) made a
couple of really good saves and even at the end the lads were
throwing themselves in the way of the ball to stop a goal.
"The team spirit is second to
none and you need that on nights like this.
"That relationship with players and supporters is so important and
the Newcastle supporters have made the new guys feel very, very
welcome.
"They've got a really good
relationship with Bruno and it's only going to help if he produces
moments like that on a regular basis. It was a brilliant finish from
a player who has got outstanding attributes and I was really pleased
for him tonight.
"I've said all along there's no
doubting his quality, he's an outstanding player, but the team has
worked very well and I've been reluctant to change it.
"But he took his chance today
and played very well."
Ralph Hasenhuttl said:
"They defended quite well and were always a
threat with long balls, high balls and set pieces. That is a way you can
win games, for sure, and today they did it. We lost a game that we
didn't need to lose.
"The difference at the moment is that we don't score
from our chances as often as we could and Premier League games are decided
by small margins.
"At the moment, we don't give away a lot but we concede
too many goals and that's a little bit too easy at the moment. This is what
we have to stop because it makes it tough to win games.
"After the break, I think the second goal – we had a
foul on the middle line, what for me wasn’t a foul. Then a long
free-kick which leads to a corner, then from a corner it leads to a
goal.
"It’s frustrating but we
have to speak about the fact that it’s not possible we need two or three
goals to win the game. This is fact - one must sometimes also be enough
"Although we could also
score more from today – but this is the difference, as I said, and we have
to turn this thing around in the next game here in the next one against
Watford. It’s a must to put it on our side.
"We had 20 minutes in the second-half where I was not happy with what we
were doing, we were confused after the second goal was conceded. But I have
also seen 16 shots on goal, 11 inside the box, so this must be for more than
one goal. We made 68 per cent possession against a deep defending line.
"I think we tried a lot,
and the chances have been there. But the difference from the successful
games in the past is that we don’t make these chances, we don’t score the
goals we need.
"After the equaliser in
the first-half, we had a big one with Che (Adams). Hit the crossbar,
a few inches are missing and this is the second goal, we go in with a
different mood then I think.”
Chris Wood broke his scoring duck for the club; the first
New Zealander to do so and the 159th different Newcastle player
to net for us in the PL.
Bruno Guimaraes
also netted his maiden goal in a Toon shirt; our
160th PL scorer and the fourth Brazilian to do so in the PL,
following Cacapa, Kenedy and Joelinton. Fumaca was the odd one out,
never netting at senior level.
Coincidentally, Kenedy scored his first Toon goal against
Southampton exactly four years ago today (at SJP).
(That figure of 160 puts Newcastle level with West Ham in terms of
having the highest number of different scorers in the PL).
Miguel Almiron completed a century of PL appearances for the club,
appearing from the bench for the seventeenth time, adding to his 83
starts.
Newcastle recovered from going behind to win an away game in the PL
for the first time since turning a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 advantage at
Burnley in April 2021. Chris Wood was in the Clarets side that
day.
United have won three PL away games so far this season,
exceeding their worst-ever tally of two - set in 2003/04, 2008/09,
2012/13 and 2015/16.
This was the first of four consecutive away PL fixtures, something that
Newcastle have never previously experienced in the Premier League - although there are
numerous instances of three in a row on the road.
One has to go back to 2014/15 for the last time United had more than
this season's current total of 31 points after 27 PL games (that was 35
points).

Newcastle continued their recent
fine run of form on Thursday, coming from behind to win at St.
Mary's and extend their unbeaten run to nine
games.
There were first Toon goals for Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes in
reply to Stuart Armstrong's opener; the Kiwi's a trademark header
and the Brazilian's an impish backheel in front of an ecstatic away
support.
Allan Saint-Maximin's winner here in 2020 was vital to maintaining
United's Premier League status and another three points at the same
venue two years later helped open up a ten point gap on the bottom
three.
That was the outcome of another positive night where the
Magpies made light of their lengthening injury list as Watford,
Leeds United and Norwich City were all being soundly beaten
elsewhere.
Having broken the winless sequence against Burnley before Callum
Wilson's latest absence and then lost Kieran Trippier after a
sensational start to his time in Toon, Newcastle took to the field
tonight with both Saint-Maximin (illness) and Joelinton (injury)
missing from the squad - the absence of the latter meaning that
Guimaraes made his first start.
The Saints meanwhile were unbeaten in their last dozen home league
and cup outings; only Wolves having left here with maximum points so
far this season.
The hosts began confidently and Armando Broja blazed his shot over
the bar midway through the first half, before Kyle Walker-Peters
centred from the left flank, Mohamed Elyounoussi headed the ball
back across goal and Stuart Armstrong nodded it home via a
Dan Burn deflection on 25 minutes.
That was enough to wake up Newcastle and just seven minutes later
they were level after Jonjo Shelvey expertly picked out Wood, who
rose above Mohammed Salisu to beat SJP old boy Fraser Forster from
six yards out.
The teams went in level after Che Adams chose power over precision
with a 37th minute volley and smacked his effort off the Newcastle
crossbar.
United gained a 52nd minute lead after Matt Targett's corner was
headed across the six yard box by Burn; Bruno standing with his back
to the goal and casually flicking the ball into the roof of the net.
And with the home side still reeling, an identical flag kick caused
all sorts of problems for Southampton and almost brought a third
away goal; Targett and Jacob Murphy both coming close during a manic
moment in the box.
Hopefully the identity of the scorers irked
home boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, who had made some inadvisable comments about new
signings when this game was postponed at the turn of the year. He
may also reflect that the ten week delay cost us the services of
last season's top scorer, our most prolific assist provider and that
colossus of a midfielder who only cost £40m....
2-1 ahead, a mixture of last-ditch defending and fine goalkeeping
saw United preserve that lead; former Magpie Adam
Armstrong firing wide and fellow substitute Shane Long unable to
extend his scoring record against us. Joe Willock's magnificent
"body on the line" block was also crucial.
Dubravka made a succession of stops to preserve the lead,
before joining his colleagues in now- familiar scenes of post-match
elation with fans who defied considerable logistical problems to get here
in midweek. What was already a big ask was made even harder by a van
fire on the A34 that delayed many.
That's now six wins out of seven - three in a row - for a
rejuvenated Magpies side who have gained 21 points in nine games since
losing to Manchester City 81 days ago.
When that run began, we'd taken just ten points from the previous 18
games: an incredible transformation.
