Newcastle's interest in the Premier League
Cup came to an end in South West London on Friday, beaten
by Fulham in their last 16 tie at Motspur Park.
Elliot Dickman's side fell behind on nine minutes when Idris Odutayo
headed Sonny Hilton’s left wing free kick on to the crossbar; Kieron
Bowie converting the rebound from point blank range.
Clad in their blue change kit, Newcastle came more into the tie
after the break but without seriously testing Cottagers custodian
Alex Borto.
Having done the double over United en route to winning the PL2
Division Two title last week, Fulham sealed their progress to the
Quarter Finals of this competition in the 90th minute.
Breaking up a visiting attack, the hosts headed downfield and
striker Jay Stansfield ran from the halfway line before rifling a shot home
for his third goal against
United in as many games this season.
Chasing a league and cup double after wrapping up the PL2 title, the hosts won 6-1 on Tyneside in PL2
last week - inflicting a 1-3 defeat on Newcastle at Motspur Park back in September.
With a Northumberland Senior Cup Final looming against Blyth
Spartans, the U23s now have eight PL2 games left to try and hold on
to a promotion playoff place.
