Tuesday saw Newcastle U23s advance to the last four of the
Northumberland Senior Cup - but only after surviving a late comeback from
their Northern League hosts that saw the tie settled by a penalty shootout.
A record crowd of 1,357 at Woodhorn Lane saw United ahead at the break
through Jay Turner-Cooke - and when Cameron Ferguson doubled that lead on
the hour, the outcome looked a formality.
The Colliers had other ideas however and following a triple substitution,
two goals in just five minutes brought them level. With no further scoring
and no provision for extra time in this competition, the tie went straight
to penalties.
United went first and scored their first four spot kicks, Ashington
emulating them until Magpies goalkeeper Will Brown blocked their fourth
effort from Danny Anderson.
That gave Nathan Carlyon the opportunity to win it and the 19 year-old
defender confidently dispatched his penalty.
Turner-Cooke had given the visitors the lead in the 23rd minute when
he was left unmarked in the box and guided the ball home from Matty
Bondswell's left wing
cross.
On the hour, Rosaire Longelo pulled the ball back from the byline on the
right for Cameron Ferguson to execute a neat turn and fire home his first
goal at reserve team level.
Ashington responded on 70 minutes when Karl Ross met Max Cowburn's deep cross
from the right flank and headed over the stranded Brown from 12 yards.
Five minutes later the scores were level when ex-Magpie Craig Spooner drove
home a loose ball from a poor clearance.
Turner-Cooke had a chance to restore United's lead two minutes later but his
drive went the wrong side of the post.
The Magpies appeared to have retaken the lead with seven minutes of normal
time remaining when Longelo lobbed Karl Dryden and the ball ended up in the
net, Turner-Cooke and a defender tussling to get a touch. However an offside
flag saw the effort ruled out.
That was to the the end of the scoring, before United completed a full house
of penalties to advance in the cup and register their fourth consecutive victory
in all competitions.
