This was United's most sizeable defeat in PL2 since they conceded six goals
without reply away to Reading back in August 2019.
Newcastle U23s suffered their heaviest PL2 defeat of the
season on Friday, behind closed doors at the Staplewood training
facility of Southampton.
The visitors trailed 0-2 at the interval to the Saints - Kazeem
Olaigbe netting in the 18th and 38th minutes - United forced into a
defensive change shortly after the opener when Josh Oliver came off.
However that hardly tells the story of the half; United creating a
trio of noteworthy chances with the game scoreless.
Seeking their fourth successive league victory and clean sheet,
the in-form hosts were denied a third goal when Ramello's effort was ruled
offside.
Following further United pressure, Southampton did make it 3-0 on
61 minutes when Dynel Simeu was left with a simple finish after a
corner kick reached him.
Thierry Small then added another just five minutes later as
Southampton broke away again in devastating fashion. And the punishment continued, Lewis Payne making Dan Langley pick the
ball out of the net for a fifth time on 80 minutes.
