United's new U23 coach Elliott Dickman was at Whitley Park on Friday
evening as his new side twice took the lead, but were unable to withstand
City's attacking instincts.
The Canaries arrived on Tyneside having scored at least three goals
in each of their away games this season - including a 4-3 success
against the mackems who at that time were overseen by Dickman.
Newcastle led at the break after their best move of the half saw
them break out of defence on 25 minutes; Dylan Stephenson teeing up
Jay Turner-Cooke to net with a low curler that went in off the
far post.
Norwich were happier in possession and more dangerous in attack, but
failed to press home their advantage for an hour, until an awful back pass fell
to Jon Rowe. He advanced before releasing strike partner Tom Dickson-Peters,
who poked the ball under the advancing Dan Langley.
Parity was regained for just four minutes though, before United's
Josh Scott was sent tumbling in the area by Flynn Clarke; Jack Young
sending Dylan Berry the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Substitute Clarke made up for conceding the penalty by hitting a
superb free-kick that beat Langley all ends up in the 78th minute,
levelling the scores at 2-2.
And with striker Shae Hutchinson coming off the bench, the visitors
pressed for a winner, with Langley doing well to deny Rowe after he
burst into the box.
Restored to a central striking role after starting on the right
wing, top scorer Dylan Stephenson lobbed the 'keeper in the second
minute of added time but the
ball rebounded back off the crossbar and Turner-Cooke couldn't apply
the finish.
Had that gone in though, it would have meant a fortunate three
points for Dickman to get off the mark with; City full value for the
draw and livelier going forward. It's fair to say the new man has
some work to do.
