Despite a 90 minute shift from Jonjo Shelvey, Newcastle U23s failed to secure what would have been a third successive PL2 Division Two win on Monday.

United came from two goals down to draw level with Wolves before a late sucker punch saw the visitors steal all three points.

Looking to improve his match fitness, Shelvey made his second U23 appearance of the season and came close with a 14th minute effort the 'keeper palmed away.

The visitors ended a forgettable first half a goal up; Michael Agboola's 41st minute header from Chem Campbell's corner cleared by Shelvey but given as a goal by the linesman, having crossed the line.

Four minutes after the break a swift counter attack ended with Harry Birtwistle forcing home a loose ball to double the lead for Wolves - who had romped to a 3-0 victory at Whitley Park last season.

There was a speedy reply from the home side though when Shelvey's free-kick from the right side of the box was met by Charlie Wiggett from close range to half the deficit.

Shelvey himself seemed a certain scorer when lurking at the near post as a corner kick came over in the 58th minute - but was unable to flick Dylan Stephenson's first time volley past the goalkeeper.

United were level seconds later though, top scorer Stephenson firing low beyond Louie Moulden via a post after controlling a long ball from the outside of Shelvey's foot in the area.

Having unsettled Wolves with a more direct approach, Newcastle introduced Rosaire Longelo on the right and pinged a series of balls to both him and Adam Wilson on the opposite flank.

Their best chance of a third goal came in the 87th minute when Joe White broke over halfway and set Stephenson away - making a shooting chance that Moulden blocked before blasting the rebound over the crossbar.

A soft goal against the run of play then won it for Wolves on 89 minutes, Oscar Burr's ball into the box from the right helped on by Jack Hodnett for Conor Carty to turn away from Wiggett before guiding a shot inside Dan Langley's post.

Among those present was interim Head Coach Graeme Jones, who now has the decision to make as to whether Shelvey warrants a recall to the first team when Chelsea visit Gallowgate in the Premier League on Saturday.
