This was the first derby meeting at this venue since lockdown; the previous game coming in the Checkatrade Trophy during January 2018, when the mackem first team beat United U21s 4-0 in front of 16,654 spectators.

Of the 14 Magpies involved that night, only Adam Wilson and Rosaire Longelo saw action again tonight (Dan Langley was an unused substitute in 2018, playing in 2021).
 

Second half goals from Jay-Turner Cooke and Adam Wilson saw the U23s come from behind to win the PL2 derby at the stadium of plight on Monday.

It took just four minutes for the first flashpoint of the evening; United's Joe White winning a free kick but following through on an opponent and prompting a brief melee involving 16 players from both sides.

That looked to be the most memorable action of what was a turgid opening half by both sides, until the mackems went ahead in the 39th minute.

Magpies goalkeeper Dan Langley tipped over a speculative shot from Ellis Taylor at the expense of a corner, but was powerless to prevent Tyrese Dyce turning the ball home when the flag kick reached him towards the back post.

United almost instantly replied when Lucas de Bolle had the ball at his feet deep in enemy territory, only for his shot to be smothered by 'keeper Jacob Carney.

Jay Turner-Cooke did get Newcastle level seven minutes after the break against his old side, deflecting a White shot into the mackem net.

White was then the architect of what proved to be Newcastle's winner in the 59th minute, racing into the box before unselfishly setting up Adam Wilson who made no mistake with a low strike.

The hosts pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, Langley doing well to claw away Caden Kelly's goalbound effort with a minute of normal time left.

But the blue-clad Magpies held out through almost six minutes of additional time; White coming close to grabbing a goal of his own after leading a counter attack but firing narrowly wide.
