Midfielder Jamie Miley
made his first league appearance at this level from the bench, the 20th
player to appear in PL2 so far this season in four games. He featured in
the Premier League Cup against Watford a week earlier.
Monday saw Newcastle United U23s lose their unbeaten record
in Premier League 2 Division Two this season at the fourth time of asking -
two self-inflicted wounds handing West Bromwich Albion all three points.
Facing the Baggies at the New Bucks Head home of AFC Telford, the Magpies
second string fell behind on 33 minutes when Quevin Castro's side-footed effort from
the edge of the box went through Dan Langley's hands.
Seven minutes later, visiting defender Charlie Wiggett struggled to contain Rico
Richards' run into the box from the Albion left, before Jack Young
sent him tumbling, conceding a spot-kick
that Mo Faal calmly converted after sending Langley
the wrong way.
That 0-2 deficit was slightly tough on the visitors who had started well
and almost finished a fabulous team move in the 15th minute but Joe White's shot
lacked power.
However, United created
very little after the break, Callum Ferguson unable to find a
colleague when well-placed in the box.
The home side had chances to increase their lead in the closing
stages; substitute Reyes Cleary going close after a mazy run before Taylor
Gardner-Hickman sent his dipping effort narrowly over.
Clad in their blue change kit, Newcastle included midfielder White in
their starting line-up following his maiden senior bench selection at Old
Trafford.
Also in the side was
Elliot Anderson and the youngster completed an hour on his comeback
from a hip injury that had sidelined him since the summer.
And although he didn't add to his five U23 goals so far this season, Dylan
Stephenson featured and was subsequently reported to have been promoted to
the first team squad in the continued absence of Callum Wilson.

Taking charge of United on a temporary basis was Kevin Richardson, the interim interim coach, following last week's departure of Gary
Caldwell.
Richardson is the fourth different U23 coach this season; Chris Hogg
quitting after pre-season and Academy coach Mark Atkinson at the helm for
the season opener against Reading as Caldwell's arrival was being concluded.
News on a permanent appointment in succession to Hogg is awaited, while it's
claimed that Caldwell is in line for a role with Manchester City.
