Kyle Crossley scored on his U23s debut and became the 49th player used in PL2
games so far this season (Fabian Schar was the 48th). Substitute Ollie Walters
then appeared to bring up the half century.
Monday saw United's second string make a winning return to
Whitley Park, following a run of seven successive away games in
Premier League 2.
The Eagles arrived on Tyneside looking for a victory to propel them
into a promotion playoff place, but were second best all afternoon
and slightly flattered by the full time score.
First team defender Fabian Schar and development squad winger
Rosaire Longelo returned from injury, both completing 45 minutes as
scheduled.
Adam Wilson's 44th minute shot divided the sides at half
time, but Newcastle should have been ahead well before then -
Christian Atsu setting up Wilson and then Stan Flaherty, only for
both to fire over the crossbar when well placed.
Jack Young's free kick and Atsu himself then tested Eagles 'keeper
Oliver Webber before Atsu
powered forward through the middle and played in Wilson to convert a
low shot for his second goal of the season.
Wilson came close to getting his second eight minutes after the
break, getting his head to a quickly-taken free-kick outside the
box, only to see it palmed over by Webber.
The visitors made a triple substitution midway through the second
half but three minutes later United sealed the points with a second
goal.
Teenager Kyle Crossley had appeared as a half time substitute
and marked his debut at this level with
a fine run and shot from the left hand side of the box into the
opposite corner of the net.
